We are at the ‘GCR Golden Oldies Gala’ on Sunday 29th May 2011 and see the 'Planet' Replica getting the green flag and pulling out of Quorn & Woodhouse with the 11:00 departure for Loughborough. Next on board the later 13:00 departure we pass the L&M 'Stephenson' 0-2-2 ‘Rocket’ Replica on the 12:40 Loughborough to Quorn & Woodhouse, then stop and restart at an adverse signal. Finally the 'Planet' Replica pulls out of Loughborough station and runs towards the depot.

I love the early British and American locomotives especially 1830s-1840s. everyone reading this should know that revenue based railroads got underway in Britain between 1804 to 1815 (example, the coal hauling steam elephant). passanger service began by the mid to later 1820s in Britain. in America our first serious steam trials were 1828 (there were experimental engines and working, steam powered 1/4 of full size , working, steam powered scale-models models than ran around loops of track by Fitch possibly as far back as 1786-1791. those 1/4 scale live steam models were built to convince skeptics who maintained steam could not move it's own boiler, firebox and fuel & water supply. there was a British inventor, before Trevathicks who also built working models of proof of concept steam locomotives that he ran on a small circular track (This was early as 1783) In America passanger service began around 1828 (horse drawn) and regular steam drawn by 1830 on the South Carolina Canal & Railroad and Baltimore and Ohio 1831/32. look up the B&O RR's incredible grasshopper and mud digger locomotives.

I enjoyed my time at MOSI where this loco lived, both firing and driving it, I couldn`t make this gala, which was a shame, on a decent run like the GC., it would have tested my firing and driving skills..never mind I have the memories..

Hello Denis, would it be possible to use a few clips from your video in a podcast episode about early railways? I would credit you and link back to your channel. If so, I would be very appreciative! All the best.

There's one thing I don't understand about British railways in the early days. Its such a cold wet country. Why didn't they close the sides in on the passenger carriages? It rains all the time and people would be soaked and frozen to death in winter

They did on 1st class carriages. People usually brought umbrellas, coats, and Macintoshes (rain jackets) when traveling in 2nd class.

Must have been quite a step forward from the 'Rocket'.

Always, always, the wind noise interferes; so very amateur . . .
