Planet was an early steam locomotive built in 1830 by Robert Stephenson and Company for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It was the first locomotive to employ inside cylinders, and subsequently the 2-2-0 type became known as planets. A replica has been built by the Friends of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, and is operated by volunteers.

Very nice Planet loco, guys!!! 👍❤️🚂🚃🚃👮I am also a train driver and ride a Stephenson's Rocket, but only in a simulation. I love British Railways ❤️ 🇬🇧🤝🇨🇿🇸🇰

This is a jouney which from 5 Jan 2016 is no longer possible due to the Ordsall Chord running accross the end of the Museum site. The white trouers are perfectly accurate - white was cheep to produce and easy to wash. The "wagging levers" are the controls for the slip eccentric valve gear. There are eccentrics on the driving axle with dogs on, into which the valve rods engaged and locked inplace with another two handles (just visible at either side) The foot pedal slides the dogs over from one side to the other, for forward or reverse gear. There's a a"nack" to driving her.

Does it have variable cutoff?
@DiegoLiger
@DiegoLiger 4 года назад
@@gregorymalchuk272 It's fixed at 85%. Whilst the expansive working of steam was known, and locomotives before Planet such as Lancashire Witch did have veriable cut-off, Planet, like Rocket and her sisters, didn't have variable cut off. In fact it would not be possible with this type of valve gear, or with the later Gab valve gear as fitted to Lion etc. Some early variable cut off valve gears included the Horses' Leg valve gear patented by Willia Gray in 1839 or Isaac Dodds' sliding wedge valve gear. Finally its only really with Stephenson-Howe valve gear, the first form of link valve gear do you get variable cut off :-) Hope this helps.

2-2-0 is a wonderful wheel arrangement. Cheers!

@fudgebaker thats stephensons early valve gear, the same of which is fitted to rocket. those 2 levers represent the valves for each gear now as stephensons valve gear is made up of slip etcentric's the driver is required to push one forward to let steam drive one ciylinder forwar and pull the other back to help ocmpleate one full drive of the wheel when the loco picks up momentum the system works without the required interaction of the driver

It was called Gab Valve Gear.

Thanks for uploading, it was fascinating. Interesting how the driver has to manually help with the timing of the pistons.

Only to start off. Once the locmotive is moving and the valve gear locked in place, it's self perpetuating

Hi thanks for the comments I am not sure they could be the regulator handels for putting the train into forward and reverse but thats a guess. Jeff

now that the Muesum has lost the connection to the main line I am guessing that they now have less track to run Planet and their other engine on?

Great. I remember reading about these early locos in history class at school, but this is the first time I've seen film footage of one running. One point, though. I'm assuming the dial on the right hand side is a steam pressure gauge? Would the original have had this? Or is it just there to satisfy modern safety requirements?

What is the story? An ancient locomotive was entombed in an abandoned section of tunnel?

@@gregorymalchuk272 after some research, I think he is referring to the now abandoned cobble hill tunnel.

Was this before Stephenson valve gear so they had to adjust the valve timing BY HAND?
@kalvinchester4068
@kalvinchester4068 6 лет назад
y11971alex this was an early essentric valve gear. This could help with the understanding. Certainly helped me www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/antique-machinery-and-history/1830-locomotive-close-up-266256/

This may have been before they realized they could work steam expensively by varying the cutoff, or at least before they could do it on steam locomotives.

what are the 2 levers on the driver's side for and why do they keep moving?

Planet, is a 2-2-0 steam locomotive, 2 leading wheels, 2 drive wheels, no trailing wheels. CAPEESH?!
@howdoiputthecheeseintheove8437
Jackierascal44 OK; You seem to be getting it wrong. Planet is a 0-4-2, cause she has TWO DRIVING WHEELS ON EACH SIDE, which makes her have 4 driving wheels altogether. She also has TWO BACK WHEELS (one back wheel on one side). So, she's a fucking 0-4-2!
