I have lived in Chiang Mai now 1.5 years now and think this video is awesome! If you wait until everything is perfect you won't leave North America or Europe or wherever. We are lucky to be able to teach English online via Italki (anyone who speaks English)) or in a real classroom (if you have a degree of some kind). I do both now. I consider myself working retired but the work is enjoyable and easy and the culture and people beautiful .. the food cheap and delicious and the weather ... sure beats snow anytime. Anyone wants to talk my Skype ID is robin.149 and email is robinsmall144@gmail.com. If you are dying inside of stress and or boredom ... do some homework, prepare and do it!

Another thing is the quality of life should not discriminate anyone by gender. If the quality of life is great as spoken by all, then there should be almost equal number of women seeking better life might move to Thailand also. But I have not seen any single woman saying that she chose Thailand for her retirement. It is all men talking about cheap housing, food and sex. I am a retired widower but I see things different perspective. I don't care about sex and food.

Fair play buddy you enjoy. I live in Thailand 6 months of every year & I love every second of it. I am 42 years old, I drive my taxi for 6 months in England then go. I have my own little house on the beach out of the tourist area. I lease my land of my Thai stepdaughter as she is now 20. This is great because I am in control I am not depending on anyone I can do as I like.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. I am 71 YO vegan. I live alone with my two dogs in Hua Hin, I stay out of the bars, I own a 2,000 USD 2nd hand car, but ride a bicycle, swim and exercise. I could easily get by on less than 16,000 Thai baht ( 500 USD) if I needed to. I have lived a simple life style for 6 years and have no complaints!

I just spent 15 months in Chiang Mai. Love it and will return soon. I have a retirement of about $2,000 a month. I can tell you that it is more than enough and I eat Western everyday pretty much. My choice. I have used the medical facilities which were very competant and cheap, although I do have health insurance. I know guys who get by on a lot less, it's all about your life style, gf, travel, drinking etc. All I can say is that you can be fine on whatever your budget is.

,I also researched for settling there at Chiang Rai. Thai Govt. wants you to park 80,000/- Baht in a Thai bank as deposits and 6500 Baht monthly income as prerequisite requirement for getting an expat visa. So, convert this to USD and see if it is cheap at all! All that for bare minimum standard of living! But I found so many expats have settled there also some old age home is also available with impeccable good reviews. For touring purpose, it is a good place without any doubt, but settling there would cost more with a non earning companion!
@frunkytowntesla
@frunkytowntesla 6 лет назад
Pradip Kumar Shome, I have been researching this quite thoroughly as I am considering moving from the US to Thailand as a (working) retiree. Speaking only to Retiree Visa, you need EITHER $24,000 deposited OR $2000/ mo provable income. You don't need both. Last year I decided to learn how to be an investor and stock/option trader. I plan to move when I have scaled up my income to $5000-$6000/mo. I have more than enough $$$ to cover the deposit requirement, but I want to be able to live securely knowing I have a steady, quality (in Thailand, not the US) income. I can live very comfortably and grow my income, portfolio and overall personal wealth much faster than in the US. All while living a nice, high quality lifestyle in an amazing country. I understand your point, however. So many expats want to emigrate to Thailand with the bare minimum and expect to live like they have the maximum. Even worse (imo) is when an expat moves to Thailand (or anywhere) and expects to find a woman who will do the earning, cleaning and move him into her home or her family's home. These guys don't work, or even try to work. They basically mooch off the women and their families. At least this guy in the video does not mooch off other people. He seems comfortable and happy and supports himself. Good for him. I certainly plan on supporting myself. I will find and purchase my own condo (can't own land, but can own a condo) and earn my own living. It all comes down to planning and common sense. If you expect to magically live like a king on the the minimum financial requirements and don't have sufficient income, it doesn't matter where you live. You will live a lifestyle commiserate with your financial situation. Unless you plan on having someone else support you.

You can't live high on US$1200/mo. in Thailand. You can live very comfortably, and be regarded as marriageable, on $1200 IF you're willing to live a slow-paced life in a beautiful big country town like Chiang Rai. And I'm sure that old-timers know of many such country towns.

That level of budget will do outside big cities, but is your idea of "comfortable" ONE room/bath, no stove and a TV that only speaks Thai. After weeks of being illiterate, commiserating with other lonely foreigners in bars, and walking around, I have to ask is there a way except alcoholism to tolerate that life?

Thailand Retirement One thing that does concern me is the current value of the US dollar and what is looking like a potential collapse of it. I am banking on Social Security to be there when I reach early retirement at 62, but what if it isn't? That is the only downside that I currently see, and I am just hoping that all these years of working professionally (where my savings have been minimal due to various reasons) does not turn out to be misfortune. :-/
@dennisweifenbach625

Hello sly2kusa, They used to call it pessimism, now it's reality. Those who deny reality will soon be disappointed. The only accurate recommendation I can make is "don't count on anything anymore". ANYTHING. In 2002, I was a support tech with IBM, working on the newest equipment they made. I was laid off at 56, good luck at getting a new job at that age. IBM said " we don't need you support people any more, were going to support customers on the phone from Atlanta". I struggled, and reorganized as best I could. I had planned to work another 5-7 years, talk about plans dashed. I moved to a less expansive area, Colorado in 2007. Just before the crash. It helped but it was just a lesser of two evils. I started watching these RU-vid videos from this source and others about 6 months ago. Very intriguing and I am thinking of taking the plunge. But, it will take me a while to sell what I have and maybe store some things. The sickness in Washington, DC is ruining the country. The 4 years of Bush and the years with obama, the Senate, Congress have led this country into a death spiral which will soon reach its end. All I can say is plan carefully, and it may not make any difference.
@sly2kusa
@sly2kusa 9 лет назад
Hello Dennis...Thank you for that sage advice, and you are absolutely correct - I don't tend to trust too much either. My hope is to bank as much as possible and hopefully I'm able to get as much as possible from my Family's home in the future, but who knows. That being said - there is always the possibility of the world coming to an end, so I will hold off on throwing the baby out with the bath water, so-to-speak. I am going to try and get a couple of vacations in to go and see Thailand for myself firsthand. I am a pretty flexible person when it comes to spending, and based on current currency rates and projections between now and the year 2029 for Social Security, it does seem doable with that and a small savings.

i was 48 when i quit my good paying job in los angeles and moved to the philippines, a number of my co-workers are on disability due to heavy lifting so i quit while i was ahead. i just have to budget so i can stretch my savings till i collect social, i live in the country so cost of living is cheaper and can have a few luxuries like a maid, eat out and watch a movie. i speak the dialect which comes in handy and my english has been rusty, since moving back, gone are my frequent visits to ER for chest pains. went back a few times but couldn't see myself living there permanently, my maid washes my clothing, i still cook but the maid washes the dishes and clean house so no stress and can do simple things like go to the beach on a daily basis if i want to.

I disagree on two things: 1) Everyone old enough to retire should have health insurance. One stroke or other catastrophic medical event could sink you, especially if you are barely getting by in the first place. 2) Whatever you do, don't try lining up with a Thai woman over an online dating site. It's hard enough to find honest ones when you're there in person. Trying to do that over the Internet, is just insane.
@thailandretirement3681
@thailandretirement3681 8 лет назад
If we let ourselves be ruled by #1, most of us over 65 could never leave home. Although I've had zero experience with Thai dating sites, I had a client yesterday who found his new wife, a government school teacher and very beautiful, on a dating site. So some people get lucky, I guess.
@Oggiwara1
@Oggiwara1 6 лет назад
Doug Robinson I totally agreed. It is plain stupidity to not have an health insurance when you reach that age. You never know what's going to happen. You can get a stroke, hearth attack, cancer, severe accident and so on, If you have some extra money you could save money on insurance by having a higher deductible. But only idiots retire abroad without a proper health insurance.

No. Food is very inexpensive, and you can pick up occasional, legal jobs to supplement your income if you wish. My big studio apartment, with balcony, is $110/mo. Remember that the Thai minimum wage is $10/day. But you DO have to watch your spending carefully.

Tom Cat If you chase a young bar girl, you will be her ATM, I can show you how you would save some of your $3000 a month. I live on much less than that, I have a lovely lady, she is in middle management, at a Bank, she has her own house and owns lots of land, I do not pay a cent towards her family. Chiang mai is very cheap, move a little outside the city, life is good, I eat out often, go to shows, keep away from high cost tourist haunts, I have a great circle of friends, from USA, UK, NZ and Australia, we often get together for dinners, music nights, many social events, drop me a line if you need to know anything, regards......Rob.

IMHO, a better way to determine the cost of living in Thailand is the cost in maintaining the same standard of living as in your home country. I have a condo in both Vancouver and Bangkok and the price per square ft of the two condos are very similar. I assume rental units would be similarly priced in the two cities as well (I do understand though that Bangkok may not be the city that most "farangs" choose to retire in). Yes, if your Thai wife already has a plot of land, then building a house in Thailand is for sure less expensive (but again you have to look into the internal finishing and workmanship to make a fair comparison). Cars are definitely much more expensive in Thailand and I don't own one (but BTS is so convenient, though it is not cheap at 140 baht for a daily pass). While street food and food courts are inexpensive in Thailand, but if you go to a decent restaurant in the mall, you pay western prices (and get less generous serving), say 1200 to 1500 Baht for two, and the price seems to be increasing quite sharply from year to year. One thing I am not familiar with is the cost of health care. I guess that depends on where the individual is from. In my case, I split half- and half+ of my time between Thailand and Canada, I can buy travel medical insurance for around $500 CAD a year (that covers hospitalization in Thailand and transportation home in emergency situations). My conclusion is that if you want to maintain western standard of living in Thailand, you basically have to pay western level prices.

All the stuff below on what it is to be "middle class" needs to be put into a single comprehensible sentence. So here goes! "The boss of the pool of drivers who service a Bangkok-based oil company makes £300/$500 a month, and he considers himself - and is considered - the main man because of it". That's it. Like it or not, that's it. Bolt the wheels onto cars in a Japanese-owned car plant in Tennessee and you can make $40,000 a year. Be in roughly the same stratum of society in Thailand and you'll make les than a sixth of that. A young single bloke teaching English on 30,000 baht a month can live fantastically well on his £600. In London he'd be sleeping in the park and scraping the cheese from pizza boxes.

don't be so quick to judge this man, I get less then he does $500. Most McDonald's and other retail jobs are mostly part time and offer no insurance. A begger makes more then the low paying jobs in USA, that why beggers won't take these type jobs. They are not worth taking My regret is not having my own business even selling pencils or water or hotdogs would have paid more then the trashy retail crap jobs I held all part time 35 hours to avoid paying benefits and insurance.

I don't know that I can accept much from this guy. A $250,000 house in California can hardly be looked at as a grandiose way of life. I don't know how long ago he left the states, but generally in California a $250,000 house is a starter home. Not very big or new and most likely a bit run down. Some people seem to have simplistic look at life and seem to not expect much. If you want to live on $500 a month, if your happy great, but your lot in life will never improve. No matter where you live, generally the less money you have, the less you can do or expect to be able to do. Period.

Dennis Weifenbach I live in Southern CA, and I can tell you that you are correct on the values of homes, but this is just a matter of simple economics to me. Today is Tuesday April 7th, 2015 and $1 US Dollar is 32.56 Thai Baht. It doesn't take an economics major to know that you can definitely do more with less coming from the US and living in Thailand.

Spent a lot of time in both Thailand and The Philippines and I can say neither place is an option for me. Between the sex tourism, humidity and heat, noise, air and water pollution, stray animals in the streets and all around third world inconveniences both places suck. Try traveling to Hungary, Poland, Croatia or any other Central European country and unless you are a Sexpat you wouldn't think of retiring to Southeast Asia. By the way compare Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket to cities like Kraków Budapest, Split, or Riga and you will see that the cost of living is lower in the Central European cities. The crime rates are much lower as well in Central Europe

This man was never homeless he looks too well and clean to be homeless Homeless look worn out and dirty, He just had low paying work that was dead end with no insurance very typical for the USA. poor workers. It is either low income housing in USA if your lucky to get it after a life time of living in a room with crap jobs or go to place like Thailand esp if you don't get low income housing. You got to go to avoid being homeless, since you can't live on $500. or $600 which he gets or $731. SSI only is collectable in USA. but you need low income housing to not be homeless. SSI will Suplement income to $731 being $231. from SSI but you must live in USA to get SSI money. My fear is I will be stuck in the USA since my income is too low to get in with and I have no assets. In USA I get the $231. SSI Check but they don't pay that out of the country. I have no low income apartment. If I find a mate, I wonder how that would work out, I mean a fellow western, I can't support anyone I am looking for a westerner male of my age. The visa may get granted to two on $1000. The others who worked in retail also get about the same in Social Security so it is the poor paying part time jobs that did it.

Some things to think about are paying electric bill for AC and you may also be sick several times the first year or so, viruses, food poisoning, etc. I am originally from the deep south USA, very similar climate, hot and humid. Living without AC is uncivilized to people there. Everyone including poor people have AC in the south. Life here would be miserable without it.

personally, I have a MUCH HARDER TIME with fast food in western countries than I do with thai food. the water is fine. fill up a gallon for about 5 cents with purified water. shower is fine. electric and AC is 20/mo. in USA water alone is $40 can't get the ulitily bill lower than $100, compare that to 10 or 20 in thailand, ran air, I haven't been to thailand in 5 years but I read the same thing I just stated about the utilities here on youtube. MOST THAIS DON'T HAVE AC. disco tex is refering to the southern united states, not to thailand. winter utility bill in a western country even just renting a box is 200 or 300. you can rent and run the air in some other country for 120 and up RENT INCLUDED.

This obviously earnest man looks like the numbers of older white foreigner men who come 'cold' to their dream of Thailand. Maybe not him specifically, but middle class American couple will need about $4000/month USD to live the way they will want in Thailand (but they were spending double that in States). A step way down, to say $1800/mo USD as a minimum, puts you in ONE room + bath and air con, furnished with bed, and good meals for one person. Less than that, the tension of fighting your budget limits is exhausting. But beyond costs, as the man says, your biggest problem RETIREMENT relocating to Thailand is finding a Thai that you can and must trust implicitly to get you started. That is next to impossible because 1. Thai in the relocation biz are working for themselves (and you can't tell if also for you!), 2. Same for Thai lawyers and realtors, 3. no Thai who would be trustworthy would either not want to help you or would not be reachable to enlist their help (Who you gonna call?). You are illiterate, unaware of customs and beliefs, and landed in a cheap hotel trying to make a life here! Forget about it.
@thailandretirement3681

Well said. It's like any new, cross-cultural venture only more so because the Thai business culture is a minefield. Even businessmen coming up from Bangkok to Chiang Mai say the same: the North's business culture is different from theirs. The job of any real relocator in such an environment is to provide the new arrival with all the contacts they need, all of whom have been tested for years: bank manager, police contact, physician, dentist, etc. Over time they'll make their own network, but they can start life with some confidence.

Now if you lived in the uk which I did being a Brit now I live in the states. And people hear have a lot but there quality of life is lacking stressed out working 2 jobs just to keep what they have so living on 600 dollars a month is do abl for some people.and you can do it on 1200.last time I came to thailand I lived in pattaya for 3 months I wanted to see if I could live for one month on a thousand dollars my hotel room cost 5000 baht and it was a good room. By the end of the month I had 6000 baht left. Next 2 months I rocked and rolled but it can be done and I had a good time that experimental month

The essence of the issue is living good life with small income on every video. Is there anyone who chose Thailand for living in spite of being wealthy to live affluent life in the west? I never came across any like that yet. In another words, there is no advantage by living in Thailand in terms of quality of life whether it is economical or spiritual if one is rich in western standard? I will find that out by myself on this summer.

Another possiblity for this guy is he been disabled most of his life and gets a small Social Security Check, he may have M.S. or some other disability and just was not fit to work beyond his 20s if it was not dead end lowest paid jobs like retail which are almost always part time with no insurance and lead to what happened to me. I retired early before I needed to have my legs amputed for standing that lead to non stop infections. Early retirement lead to 25% off a all ready small check. This guy has never been homeless, he still has all his teeth , homeless people have no teeth and in a lot worse condition then he is. He is either disabled almost all his life or had dead end jobs that are part time with no insurance or he was in the service all his life that pays almost nothing.

First, you look great, and I'm glad your able to relax on $600. It does seem a little risky to depend on that amount for the long haul. From watching other videos I was figuring about at least $150 for an apartment, but you have a nice one at $100? Is it easy to find what you have? Spending only $300 a month for other expenses sounds like scrapping by? Do you just buy cheap food from the venders?

Food is very inexpensive, and you can pick up occasional, legal jobs to supplement your income if you wish. My big studio apartment, with balcony, is $110/mo. Remember that the Thai minimum wage is $10/day. But you DO have to watch your spending carefully.

Demographic has nothing to do with it. This clip begins in the middle of a conversation with some old fella who needs a haircut. No idea who he is, no introduction, just BAM! right into the middle of the interview. He seems unhappy to be interviewed, there's some kind of creepy blue anime-inspired toy behind him drawing focus, and a massive white wall. A good perspective. I think I'm more of a 100,000 THB/month kinda guy. I live about 51% of my life in San Diego (Coronado) - traveling to Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, KL, etc, the remainder... Personally, I would not be satisfied with the appointments of a house worth $250,000 USD in the areas I'd prefer to reside. I would also not buy a car worth $3000. Many might read this and think those are very small numbers, many others might think they are large. Its all what your comfort level is. The numbers are irrelevant. Its the feeling you have and, as Richard stated several times, "How do you define _____"?... comfort, luxury, etc... I've been a subscriber to Thai Retire Helpers for a while. Its a good, realistic perspective. I would Caution anybody thinking about Not having health insurance. Its not "healthy" insurance, i.e. If I'm fit, healthy, take excellent care of myself, I'm good. False. Its insurance. Just because my house is built with the structural integrity of a building designed to withstand an Earthquake or Hurricane, doesn't mean it can't catch fire while I'm at the mall eating a kale salad. I would submit the cost to replicate a middle class life in the US, in Thailand is about 50% of that cost. That is just MY experience.

@LiveMyAssOff
@LiveMyAssOff 6 лет назад
Honored. Thanks. What I just noticed is that this video (and it seems 3 other copies/versions of it on your channel ?) is from ~4.5 years ago. Interestingly enough the "concepts" discussed are still quite applicable HOWEVER, since you are referencing it in the Feb 2018 newsletter, I think it's important for viewers/readers/customers of Thailand Retirement Helpers to realize that the Thai economy in 2013 was quite different AND the definition of "Middle Class" in the Kingdom at that time had a much different complexion. 2013 was the year of the Lowest exchange rate in THB : USD ( e.g April 2013 = 28.67 THB : 1 USD) since ~2008... This was pre-Coup. Since this fellow is from California, at this time, Obamacare had less than 100,000 enrolled, so his attitude toward health insurance could possibly have been biased accordingly. Since this video addresses the quality of living and the cost of life at that time I think this is a very important point. Additionally, if this guy has said, "I don't really worry about my retirement because I invested everything I own in BitCoin everyone would have laughed..." Until about December of last year :-) #persepctive
