I will share this about me with you Kristin: I'm in my early 60's. I was born into this "lifestyle". My highly educated single mother of color got fed up with the U.S. in *1968,* during that particular period of "Civil Rights". She packed herself, and her only child (me) up, and we moved from Los Angeles to Recife, Brazil. I was in the 4th grade. It wasn't as spontaneous as that, as she planned it out and had a job setup as a counselor at the American school there. We lived on the Boa Viagem, across from the beach for almost 3 years. There were NO telephones, NO supermarkets (how I longed for a pop-tart), NO hot water, 2 TV stations that broadcast in Black & White. Only a handful of people spoke English. This was during a time when the Brazilian government was a military dictatorship (U.S. puppet). She made it a point to travel around that area, so we visited (by bus) areas North like Fortaleza, down to Bahia. We toured massive sugar cane plantations West of Recife. Traveled a small part of the Amazon by boat. She met a Portuguese gent, and then we moved to ... Portugal in late 1970. His job then took us to Kenya for a bit. I have 3 citizenships as a result of just that time. Ultimately we came back to the U.S. in time for me to go to High School. I Love your channel, and the many other "Nomad" channels. However, From my perspective, you guys have it easy. Almost to the point of being spoiled rotten with convenience. I'm probably just being a on old fart here. But long before it was relatively cheap and astonishingly simple to be a "digital"nomad, there were other people that have been doing this for a long time. I agree with Erick regarding his variation of _"Go where you're treated best"_ with respect to the Africa Diaspora in America, but at my age, and being somewhat traveled....I have realized you can't overcome generationally indoctrinated culture: Basically "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it swim the backstroke." I often wonder, when "digital"nomads publish videos about how great it is (how great they are?) to live overseas, are they trying to educate others, or _convince themselves_ they made a good decision. I live part-time in SE Asia, North Africa, and East Africa ... as well as the U.S. And after 50+ years of doing this off-and-on, my position is If I have to effectively plead with someone to experience life elsewhere, I really don't what that person anywhere near me or my non-American planted Flag bases. This is the American mentality that my Mother - an *OG* nomad, was running away from.

You have had an interesting life my friend. I wouldn’t mind seeing a video with you being interviewed. As far as these younger travelers/nomads I think they truly love what they’re doing and want to share their lives. I’m younger than you but older than these digital nomads and I think they are a natural outcrop of the digital age. Imagine making a living off traveling the world and just videoing it and able to make money off it?! 🤯. These two vloggers are skilled at creating videos, research, editing and storytelling. Which makes them naturals. I’ve seen vloggers with much less skill making enough money vlogging to support their travels which is amazing too.

I agree as well that it was a lot harder to live abroad in the past with less technology, but that made it more adventurous and unique. I will always cherish the years I lived abroad without a cell phone or internet. Simpler times! I think you'll find on my channel and podcast that I portray the REALITIES of living abroad - not through rose colored glasses. I think Andrew does as well, if you're referring to Nomad Capitalist. All three of us have been abroad for around the same number of years and countries. But also, just because travel is easier and cheaper than it used to be, doesn't mean that people shouldn't be able to experience this lifestyle if they want to. We have to look ahead and be realistic about the conditions of today.

@@TravelingwithKristin Please, please, please don't get me wrong. I _Adore_ the way you share your Global life experiences. I will openly admit that I am a bit jealous/envious of the current technology that allows for ease of travel. I wish: A.) I was young(er) and... B.) That as that young(er) me, I know what I know now. Under no circumstances would I ever discourage anyone from taking full advantage of the opportunities to evaluate where one could live ones best life. I have followed various vloggers including yourself, some of what Erick has created, as well as Almost Parisienne, NaturallyKenya, Nomad Capitalist (although I am at odds with his colonial capitalist mindset), The Black Experience Japan, Indigo Traveller, PassportHeavy, and others. As I get a little older, and slow down, I begin seeing things in the rear-view morror...so to speak. This is my warning: We have a place in Johor Bahru, MY. Have a duplex in Tangier Morocco. And the prime base in the U.S. Have business interest in each. The plan was to spend 'about' 4 Months/year in each as a regional base for travel and business. Well, I haven't been to JB in 17 Months...but hope to get back there this year. Spent all of one week during _last_ Spring in Tangier only because I had business in Montpellier, FR - almost forced myself to do it. The Modern Nomad life-plan in general, and the Nomad Flag Theory plan in particular can be a very romanticized reaction of getting the heck out of wherever one is currently residing due to some real or perceived issues (taxes, culture, depreciating opportunities, etc.). One should indeed live where they can have their best life - considering you only get one. As a Tourist or visitor, one is always treated well. Moreover, if one spends enough time away, the emotional baggage, frustrations, and mental burdens of ones home Country begin to evaporate. (This is why foreigners tend to do so well in other Countries) Unfortunately, even for the best laid plans; *_life happens._* A family member becomes ill or worse, a child/children needs a certain amount of situational stability, or a business opportunity requires unexpected extended time, or a _spouse becomes disenchanted with the travel,_ (it took me almost a decade to convince my wife to see that there is more to the planet than America), on and on. A single person, particularly a young(er) single person that is disciplined and dedicated, can more easily navigate and integrate the modern nomad lifestyle. But when a wife/husband comes into play, and children come into play, or other family members and loved ones who need consideration are in the mix, or business dealings go off-script...ones level of control can become severely compromised. Like anything in life, it's not as easy (far easier now than 40 years ago!) and wonderful as it sounds. If nothing else, the Global Pandemic has shown us: Take advantage of it while you can.

@@shotelco Thanks for your well-thought-out and presented reply. One thing stood out that I want to address. I entirely agree with your thoughts on how us "younger" nomads present our lives and why. For me, everything I do has two purposes. To educate and entertain. If it doesn't do BOTH, I don't do it. Context is very important to me and I believe we have a societal issue with telling stories of success/failure without giving the context of either. Comparing ourselves now to say 30 years ago would be pointless. But, we have to acknowledge that the job of each generation is to make life better for those that come after. Your mother did that for us. And I hope I'm doing that for teenagers now. Would love to sit and chat with you someday. The world needs to hear from people like you.

Erick, this video gave me the opportunity to cross your path. I have subscribed and will seek out your photography on IG, as well. You conducted yourself magnificently in this discussion. These topics are so much more important than mere travel desires. So much is on the line, and propaganda is winning. I flew on LC-130s to the South Pole Station, multiple times. I applied for fast tracked residency to New Zealand, and then came back to the US and lost that advantage. Could have lived happily in Bali, but returned to the States. Central America. South America, ad infinitum. I finally sold my house and am liquidating, to get back on the international stage and declare my own independence. Your words and conviction here were powerful. I was thinking of Henry Rollins' spoken word, George Carlin, Ice Cube, beat poetry. This talk was a thing of beauty, and an inquisitive world thanks you.

For an American that would be easily understood. He is not stupid. But far from the briightest, along with Kristina. Typical of a certain kind of American that checks so many checkboxes in an amusing permanent teenager way. Cliche upon cliche but at least not malicious and just lost rootless souls with major dysfunction of a typical certain American and first world Western cultural background kind . The shallow and superficial level of knowledge, understanding is as comical as it is tragic. What you guys imagine as profound is transparent to adults with a bit of life experience and curiosity. Americans are often indeed hilarious to be fair. USA and it's government compared with it's regular population are very different.

I am Egyptian born, Canadian since 1986 and American now. I travelled a lot too I live and work in my Southern Half of Paradise Florida, where a lot of people pay a lot of money to visit or immigrate. I was blessed to make it my new home. I never cared how much money I will make, becuase I was bless to make this choice. When I used to travel away, every time I was leaving Tampa Airport, I was always depressed, usually I do not really get depressed, the minute I arrive back to my new home, I always felt happy. I am a happy person all the time, becuase I never find a reason or a person to make me unhappy. I cut them like cancer. I love sunset, warm weather, music, the beach and beach bars, swimming, and scuba divining. It is not the best for scuba, but who cares if I got everything else. I drink socially to none. The Southern Half is From Tierra Verde where I live on The Gulf of Mexico, very laid back and quit, if I like crazy or party go to Orlando or Miami in Florida or Las Vegas Nevada. To be honest to me this is America, the Southern Half of Florida and Las Vegas, I never like to go anywhere else now. The Gulf of Mexico is warmer and the water is not choppy like the oceans, also we have the best sun and sunset. Being from The Middle East was and still is a challenge, I decided to make sure it will be a challenge for them ort me. They are the sick people not us.

@@TravelingwithKristin Lasts time I was in Egypt was in 1991 and Europe 1992, they are not like they used to be, false advertisement. We have to fight in America, to make our Paradise. We can not always escape thinking it is tge right thing to do. America is the easiest country to fix, compare to other countries and the rest of the world. This is why I am always against when the same communities congratulations together. I tell then why are you afraid of mingling with the wight infedal. How can you explain to your children that your new home is not the one. You are not helping them when you ask them to isolate themselves, similar to black. We all have to face the music and fix it now, not tomorrow. When I was in Egypt I used to be Christian, now Infedal. Since I left Egypt in 1986 I only had to go back twice, 1989 and 1990. First time was 7 days including flight and the second time was 10 days including flights, they were both around Christmas to New Year. People who escape from any problem in the world, nothing changes yet. And our only option is to fix the problems in America. The American minorities need to stand up for these criminals, including with government. I always do that. You can Calle at anytime to discuss anything. I am glad that I always find supporters like you. We need to get our Florida Back from the government Mafia. It should be Federal, no police, open 24/7, nude, everybody can drink and smoke, at any age. Did you notice that when you travel, it was like, every group of countries allow one thing not tye other, and the opposite in other places. Sometimes I said was that a coincident. We need to be free from inside out, and never let crooked government or relgion tell us how to live. We were created to be free, naked, and survive on the environment. People changed all that since early civilzation

I'm Canadian. I'm so sad that both of you dont want to live in the U.S. because of what you call a toxic environment. At 24:19 Erick points out how ludicrous it is that countries all aroud the world have better health care for everyone than does the US. I lived in the US for 9 years, which was very eye-opening. For one thing, I decided I would call myself an atheist, after seeing the Christian Fascism. I also saw how every US American is told from birth that they live in the best country in the world and how hard it is to break that conditioning. My hope was that the US will get decent universal health care. School funding is also a scandal. it depends on local tax bases so of course poor distrcts cant afford better facilities and teachers. We dont really have these problems in Canada and the systems arent too different. The US always seems on the brink of going the right way but it is consistenly stopped by corporate power. I understand that Erick cant wait for change and wants to live somewhere that he is treated as an individual.

valid issue and thoughts. i knew expats that lived overseas for years mostly (asia). as i was living there also. when they decided to come back to the US. they were much "wiser" and balance fo our nation. the bad, the good and the "ugly". one "sees" how couples (male/female in this context) care and treat each other. my bud troy came back to his home in Boston for a few months with his 29yoa (pretty) thai wife. troy is 53 in good shape, good man. his wife get stairs in beantown like "you go girl. get that $ from that daddy" in the US. not so in asia. quantitative age. like someone 50+ retired, still OK looking, some reasonable funds is considered "respected in asia". they made it to that "level" of life. girls in thailand say 25-35 that is a commodity; but more importantly, it is "respected" and admired in their culture. it is not a "sugar" daddy (per say). that, in part, is due to the "jealous" female agenda in the US (true). the "male" is only what we (women) define him as and to. before she turned 30 and he "turned" 54 they sold everything and left. chang mai now has two wonderful (respected) residents. yes that bad "pervert" man left with his "beautiful" wife back to thailand. cool "will" do. the US has "two" less persons paying 10% sales tax and $50 for dinner for two and "attitude" from the 250lb. female coffee shop "host" wearing a BLM shirt to match "attitude" and thoughts.

@@peaceom777 you can state the word attitude all you want. if you're speaking about my 35 years of (adult) observation, knowledge, education and career and what I observed and saw as factual.. then you can utilize the word 'attitude" about that. while working for a metro urban city in florida in 2002 I was the most qualified person for a lateral promotion. affirmative "action"-gave it to a less senior and less qualified african-american female. she did not serve in the us military. i was a honorable veteran. 2 years later in a hallway in a five-step stairwell at work- without CCTV she "fell" and claimed to be injured and sued the city and left.. the only "hallway" of 15 that did not have it CCTV'd. there is your claimed "attitude" why some african americans do not live in the US.

This was an interesting video. I lived in Bangkok for about 3 years, from 2015 to 2018, as an English teacher and entrepreneur. Some important points were missed (or not disclosed), in the video, which would give more clarity of the nomad lifestyle. 1. What type of visa is The Minority Nomad on? Is he working for a company the sponsors his work permit and visa? Or did he get a residency permit (or maybe a citizen l, rare but attainable). 2. Does he speak, read, and write Thai? 3. Is he married (to a local or expat), single, because marital status categorizes men (and women), into different lifestyles. He did say he had a child (and mother of child) , did is child join him in Thailand? Or stayed back in the US, leaving caregiving responsibilities to his family while he works and travels the world? 4. Non-citizens are guests in Thailand, yes Western men have advantages and treated as "gods" but to say foreigners can do what they want is not respectful. And there is growing resentment of locals who see foreigners live a better quality of life and get paid better. 5. Yes you can have a good quality of life, but the air quality (pollution and smog), has gotten worse over the years. Also, paying out of pocket for healthcare and having nomad insurance is not enough. There is a higher possibility of getting in a serious accident (hit by a motorbike), and hospitals want up to $20k deposit. I've met people who had to have GoFundMe set up. Lastly, being a western woman is a completely different experience than being a western man in Bangkok. If you have no plans to marry or have a family and settle in Thailand, great. I was a unicorn as I did meet another western man when I lived there, and know of 2 women that married local men. The dating pool for western women is super small. Whereas, it is completely normal for western men to date women 20 or 30 years their junior (no judgements), as it benefits her and her family: foreign passport, dowry, better life,her children will be given Thai citizenship and she can pass her language, culture and traditions. A Thai family would be skeptical if not out right not accept a son marrying a western woman (this is for middle class to wealthy families), given that keeping wealth, business, and legacy needs to be kept in the family (Thailand is a matriarchal culture), and a western woman most likely won't master the Thai language, take care of her in-laws, and stay in Thailand. Essentially, it's easier for poorer women to marry (if that's what you want ), socially and economically "up" and that's easiest by marrying a western man, than it is for western women to find a mate in a developing country who can provide her the same comforts and better life. So, I would like to see interviews with nomads who are married with kids, women nomads, single or married, and hear their stories.

Good questions. 1. Not a citizen but on a long term visa. 2. Speak. Survival read and write. Admittedly, a terrible language student. 3. Not married. And I keep the details of my family dynamics private. 4. It might not be "respectful" but it is reality for the most part. And your comment about growing resentment further shows that. You're absolutely right there is a growing resentment and rightfully so. But this isn't something new. Ever since deals were made with the British in 19th century, there's been this give and take between foreigners and locals here. 5. Yes, the air quality has gotten FAR worse in the last 5 years. 2020 wasn't bad for obvious reasons. It depends on your insurance plan and how much you have put away for "emergencies" Not all insurers are equal. Which is why I believe it should be at the top of the list for people to consider. My company is fantastic. Allianz Your marriage/dating commentary is spot on. Agree with everything you wrote.

Hi Kristin, Great interview. This interview really hit home for me. I've always had a passion for travel and exploring other cultures. While sitting at home over the past year during the pandemic, I realized I was just sitting here doing nothing! So I concluded, I can do "nothing" in plaza, central market or white sandy beach anywhere in the world! So I've decided I want to travel and live abroad, travel northern Europe then possibly settle in Spain. So I came up with a 2 year plan to get my affairs in order, to make this happen. It's great to see a Thailand focused program, and Erick brings both experience and intelligence that's not often found on sites discussing life in Thailand. I live in Chiang Mai for part of the year, and it's no secret that CNX has become a digital nomad center. And while Erick likes the 24/7 "New York" vibe of BKK, for me, the more low-key vibe of Chiang Mai is much more comfortable. Chiang Mai is a northern Thai city, with a solid infrastructure of an international airport, modern hospitals, restaurants and entertainments, museums, ancient temples, along with some key items that BKK doesn't have, such as elephant parks and mountain forests and air. If you have some level of talent and a work ethic, the US is a great place to live. One can outearn most of the rest of the world for similar work, but it can then be appropriate to take one's digital talents to Thailand and work remotely from there earning US dollars, or to later in life take one's savings/retirement funds/income and move to a country where healthcare, culture, friendly Thai welcoming culture, and a warm, sunny, sabai life is not only possible, but highly affordable.

I really valued hearing Erick's perspective - so insightful and profound. I liked Chiang Mai but it's not the right fit for me long-term. That's the beauty of being able to live abroad and choose your "place" in the world, even if it's temporary (like Costa Rica for me). I love being around water and nature. I'd probably choose Koh Samui if I lived in Thailand long-term. It has the right balance of amenities, things to do, and island life.

@ Justin, my two baht on your question is this: Chiang Rai is a nice city but not as physically or aesthetically as beautiful as Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai is popular with expats as it provides a city that is proximate to the mountains, and many enjoy the open space and mountains and coffee farms near Chiang Rai. And so, I won't say CR is similar, but it is more economical, but at the end of the day, CNX is also very affordable by western standards.

I was always in love with the idea of travel and have done my share, but my boss in 1976 told me at the beginning of my career, "do your traveling during your vacations" I had to admit, he was right, so that's what i have done since then, but now in two years I will be retiring, and I will be resuming my love of travel and executing that desire at last.

You don't have to feel like you were not born there to be a nomad. You can feel you were born there, but simply prefer to be somewhere else. If I like Bangkok, I don't need to feel I should have been born there. I think a real nomad can know and feel where they were born, but would rather be elsewhere. That is the restless wandering heart that makes us travel nomads.

Great conversation. Glad your are pivoting to "feeling lonely" I have done solo travel now for 20 years (divorced twice so avoiding relationships after having raised my two daughters as a single Dad). I consider myself and expert at traveling solo. I am actually at a point where I enjoy myself immensely. Recent trips have been Costa Rica, Ecuador and Belize. Solo is OK with me. I think you have to like yourself in order to enjoy solo travel. If you cant' be alone, you are in bad company. I find myself laughing at situations all by myself. Do I feel lonely sometimes? maybe a little. But for now, I need to enjoy traveling solo as much as possible. It's a mindset. Love to hear you talk about it.

Where is Erick’s son? I hope he did not abandon him. Woman are very easy in Thailand. Is that the reason he likes Thailand so much. I have lived all over the world. Lived not as a tourist for 50 years due to my job. The United States is not perfect but it’s the one of the place in the world to live.

This is an amazing discussion, I agree wholeheartedly.Thanks. I've built so many roots here now that it's a big job to uproot in order to move, but it's what I need to do. You two are young, without much baggage... I need to find how to store my possessions or -- give them all away! Anyone have thoughts on how to navigate that -- it's more than downsizing - it's basically like becoming homeless, all your possessions fit in a backpack... and how do you maintain your important relationships with those you're leaving behind?

Yes, family is strong...that’s why I’m still working and living in the USA! I’ve been saying “let’s go” for over 25 years! And this is coming from someone who has already moved countries and states! Yes! America is ok but other places are just as great or greater! Especially! In mindset, education, and horizons! (And, many more!)

Great interview. I can’t wait for part 2. Bangkok checks all of my boxes as a place to live as well. I am only a few years away from retirement and keeping my options open. Honestly Nino, I'm over quoting the price, to be honest. $1500 is on the high end if I actually tried to "life hack" or keep expenses down. I could easily do it for under $1000. I just have a very active social life. Generally speaking, my life is pretty chill here though.

Depending on which part of Thailand u will want to reside... bangkok.pattaya r the 2 most expensive places..u can opt to go to other area like the north or south side. They all have pretty Beach.. or some other places that is less crowded... I like Chiang Mai in the north. Koh Samui or Phuket ...all have good internet access... Et.

Erick, you are being super fair with your view of the Military. Keeping in mind the purpose of any Military, you are being fair. In the end war in not a pretty thing, and no Military in the world can turn it into something good or even moral. We become warriors and do exactly what warriors do and see what warriors see. We don't have to love it or sugar coat it. It is what it is. War is hell on earth. Thanks for you service, and thank you very much for not criticizing our military. We all not it's not perfect but it is effective at what it does as far as a military machine can be. Great Job!

Wow, I looked into the Air Force too to pay for my MBA. I’d already lived in Europe and traveled to over 15 countries. I got a scholarship instead and got MBA in France. Wound up traveling to another 30 counties since. Covid has slower me down, though ready to go again. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I was in Bangkok in 1976. I dont remember those huge tall high-rises! Big park in the mddle of the city with food markets, stuffed cobras, and a buddhist temple. Long narrow boats on the canals powered by a small car engine at the near end of a long propeller shaft, big wooden boats resemblng Noahs ark sinking lower and lower in th water as it was loaded by men carrying big sacks on their backs
