Whoohoo! It is a day of celebration today, we made the final payment on our house ! What a good feeling this is. Paid off a 25 year loan in 17 years using many of the frugal hints and tips from this channel. We are going to the Royals game tonight to celebrate. Going to have a cookout on Monday, church on Sunday, but not much else planned. It is a good weekend to just chill! Didn't know I was supposed to be trimming the lilac bush now so will add that to my weekend list.
Hi! Just wanted to share the good news; we made the final payment on our rental property on Friday. It took us seven years and we are now completely debt free including our primary home. Frugality works and debt only places limitations on your dreams! Keep up the good work with your channel.
I miss your Tuesday videos! Your channel has really helped me start to be frugal! I am a 71 year old widow and it’s really necessary for me now - I just wish I had known about this sooner, but at least it’s helping me now!
Started my sourdough starter back in March. I call her my dough baby and I am enjoying all kinds of things pita bread, pizza crust, focaccia, no knead dough, bread, crackers, English muffins, bagels, and pancakes having so much fun with it and I’ve given some of it to my friends and family to enjoy
27:09 We’ll be hanging out at home and grilling hot dogs, baked beans, and potato salad. We do have the app here in Central Texas, with several doughnut shops available….but haven’t tried it yet
We are having our family to our place up north. We will have a potluck with all of our neighbors here. The grandkids will enjoy making smores over the campfire. There will be swimming and fireworks too.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video! With your mention of caring for lilac bushes, it makes me sad that I didn’t think to take a cutting from the lilac bush in the yard of my childhood home after my parents passed away. But perhaps I can plant a new one in their honor……🥰 Your sourdough journey will be interesting to watch. I’ve never attempted it, and since we eat gluten free bread now, I’m feeling intimidated to try sourdough with the gluten free flours. But I’ve read that it’s definitely possible. Mary on the channel Mary’s Nest has a video about it, which I plan to check out again. Very glad to hear that you and Paul have more time to devote to his parents and other activities since you scaled back your videos. You two must do what you have to do for YOUR lives. Take good care of yourselves and I look forward to seeing you in your next video! ❤️-Brenda
No plans for the weekend besides calling my sisters. As we grew up, we always celebrated this weekend because both our parent's birthdays were this weekend. Now that both parents are gone, I'll just connect with my sisters and probably reminisce. 😊 As you made the strawberry cake, I was thinking blueberries! I really can't try it though because of diabetes. When I moved into my 100 year old house, I over trimmed a gorgeous lilac bush. It died. I was shocked and just a little bit devastated. Live and learn. I should have learned first.... to let the lilac live. 😭 I'll be so eager to see the flowers 🌺 that grow around your mailbox! What a great idea! Love to you both, and to both Dixie and Loris, too! ❤️
I've missed you so much too! I was so excited to see your new video today. My sourdough starter is called Methuselah (named after the oldest man in the Bible because my starter is over 800 years old - from a Greek bakery in Mykonos!)
I recently saw a man planting seeds by dropping them through a narrow long pvc pipe instead of bending down or crawling. We have started using a grabber for lawn cleanup. It made it much easier. Save your back and knees when you can. We were able to accomplish more work by using an unconventional tool.
thanks for the lilac tip! I noticed it bloomed more this year because I trimmed it last year. I still have my flowers blooming and I just made lilac syrup. Its great! and I ended up with 2 litres of syrup with 8 cups of flowers. Maple syrup is expensive so this on pancakes is a substitute. But dandelion honey is much better as its a stronger taste! I need to make more but I have done too good a job weeding previous years so I have harvested all the dandelions. I need to sow some in a controlled container I boil the greens and make honey with the flowers. I use a paper towel with veggies, herbs and strawberries to absorb moisture to prevent spoiling. Mushrooms especially spoil quick but with a paper towel inside container they keep weeks longer. That cake looks good! Yum!! That bag of $3.99 goodies was a deal. Freeze them! I wish we had an app like that in Canada. Ppl are skipping meals because of inflation. We eat once a day too now sometimes twice if we have oatmeal for breakfast. But the meal I make for the day is from scratch and complete. We are not starving. But being anemic is problematic with our inflation. I can’t raise animals for meat. I made sourdough yeast before but it needs to really ferment to work. I use a coffee filter and jar ring to ferment it. My grandma in Italy kept it on countertop with oiled fig leaves on top in a bowl. I don’t have fig leaves to do it like this. Theirs lasted years and they shared it between everyone.
Love your channel and way of life. Always check to make sure your postal carrier isn’t allergic to bee stings before planting flowers around your mailbox.
Memorial Day meal- grilled chicken breast with macaroni salad and Oreo Whip. Our daughter gave me a fantastic marinade recipe using yogurt! It looked horrible but once on the grill, it came out amazing. Everyone needs a bagel guillotine!
Getting ready to go to the lake as we do every year. This year it will be just me and my husband. We are taking steaks that we bought in sale about a month ago to grill. Yesterday our Mennonite friend gave us fresh squash, potatoes, and green beans. We sliced and diced those, added some garlic, seasonings, etc… and will place them in a foil pan with some butter on the grill alongside our steak. We call it vegetable medley. There is a nominal entrance fee to the lake for day use (five dollars) which include the picnic area and swimming if we choose to. For tomorrow, actual Memorial Day, we plan to go get my mother and bring her to our house for lunch. She can’t be out in the sun for very long due to medications, so she can no longer participate in our annual lake trip, so we adjusted our plans this year. Happy Memorial Day to all in the US and thank you to each and every person who has and is presently serving in our US military, and thank you to the families of those that have served, who are serving, and who have lost loved ones while they were protecting our country. No one truly understands the sacrifice of a military family. ❤️❤️
I’m in England visiting my kids. Will prune the lilacs when I get back and finish planting my gardens! And try that strawberry storage tip when my berries come in!
I love lilacs!! One of my favorite all time flowering bush/tree. I finally found a bush that will grow where I live. I’ve always wondered about the sourdough starters…what they were and how to do them. It will be fun watching what you make from yours. I laughed when you asked about our weekend plans. We have a large music festival in our town and my goal was to stay home and hunker down for the weekend (HA…you know what they say about making plans). My DIL owns a bakery and was one of the food vendors at the festival. So I became the shuttle service to get folks to/from the festival and I also spent time with my son & DILs’ dogs. Great thing for them is that the bakery sold out of their food, every day and one of their items was picked as one of the top five at the festival!! So proud of my kids!
I love my starter. It is about 20 years old or so. I used to discard it like they say but stopped it soon after because I hate wasting it. I just keep it in the fridge and use it at least once a month and feed it at that time. It's still going strong.
I was unexpectedly out of town a month due to a family member's passing, so no plans this weekend other than to continue putting my house and yard back in order. I am enjoying fresh strawberries I found on sale at the store.
Oh, how I enjoy seeing your flowers. It's so easy to just look past them going down the roads around where I live but you stop and focus on them! How beautiful! And for we viewers, a real blessing.
I have the very same book here in the uk. My Auntie sent it from Savannah to my Mum many years ago. I’ve inherited it and use the same cookie recipes my Mum used.
Love the tips and tricks you share each week. Thank you for the heads-up on the lilac bush. I have a small one that has finished blooming so I will have to cut off the dried blooms. We are having a family cookout tomorrow here at the house. The weather is absolutely gorgeous here in East Central Indiana. Picture perfect days ahead in the forecast. Will attend church Sunday and will visit my mom and dad's grave. We also have a Veteran's Memorial Park that I want to visit as there is a memorial brick with my dad's name on it for serving in WWII. Best wishes to you both for a relaxed and happy Memorial Day weekend.
Yes the app is amazing!!!! I used it for the second time this week and got good bagels. 16 for 4.99! They were fresh and delicious. I froze the leftovers for pizza bagels. Just a note- if a store runs out of the surplus for your order before your scheduled pick up, they will cancel your order. Just make sure to check your email before you go pick up. My bagel order was cancelled last Sunday because they ran out. When i ordered on Tuesday, there was no shortage. I love the app ❤
I’ve had a sourdough starter I started for years. When I discard I put it in another jar and make “discard “ recipes. Usually sourdough discard waffles. King Arthur baking has many discard recipes.
I just used this app for the first time today... I bought the left over bread from a local supermarket at the end of the day and it came with a bunch of things (bread and pastries). One of them was a whole sweet bread we call folar, it 3,50€ normally and I payed 2,99€ to get the whole parcel... So in that alone was worth it. 😋
Hi Emmy and Paul. Enjoyed the video ... so much good info. I did think that Miss Dixiebelle was getting a sister 😊 We are chilling this weekend. Thank you to all our Veterans. Enjoy the weekend. God Bless.
With no discard sourdough starter, the no discard part starts AFTER your starter is mature, active and bubbly…about 7-10 days. While you are establishing it, you MUST discard some everyday because your baby Beatrice is getting older and bigger each day. The first day you fed her like an infant, but you are continuing to feed her that same amount and she's a teenager now and you will starve her if you keep feeding her and not discarding right now. I made that mistake when I started mine (Jane Dough), but on my third attempt, I was successful and she is now healthy and active. I only feed her once a week or so and she lives in the refrigerator when I’m not baking with her. I’m looking forward to your recipes because I just love baking with my sourdough starter and have taken a lot of classes and workshops on sourdough. I’m always excited to try something new. Best of luck with Beatrice!
Keep about the same amount you had the first day (about 4 ounces I think) and then discard anything else. Then add the same amount of flour and water (2 ounces of each), stir it, and put your lid on and repeat the next day. I know it feels like you are wasting flour, but that’s what you have to do to build a strong starter. You only do this until your starter is really bubbly and doubles after it is fed. That’s why you use a rubber band around your jar so you can estimate when it is doubled. You won’t be able to bake with it until it is nice and strong anyway. It can actually be a unsafe to bake with starter as you are building it. The yeasts and bacteria from the air are fighting in your jar for supremacy. When the strong, healthy yeasts have fully beat the unsafe bacteria, your starter is ready to use. The other (easier) option is just to ask someone who has a strong sourdough starter for some of theirs (or order it from King Arthur Flour or someplace else on the internet). It isn’t rude to ask at all though. Bakers are happy to share some of their starter…just like gardeners are happy to share cuttings from their plants. Once your starter is strong, healthy, and doubling after a feeding, you can then start baking with it in its doubled state and using your runny discard to make all kinds of yummy things. Crackers and pancakes are particularly good, but a lot of people add a little starter (like a quarter of a cup…not enough to taste) to everything they bake-cakes, brownies, cookies, banana bread, muffins, etc. As long as you are just adding a small amount, it won’t upset the balance of the recipe and just bulks up your baked goods a little. That's the real no discard magic!
Ahhhh . . . you should get yourself a sifter. It will save you so much time. They probably have them in Amish country. Although, you really don't have to sift flour anymore. I use the strainer that you have to put my baking power and baking soda through to get rid of the lumps, and then use a whisk to mix the soda and salt together. Just discovered your channel and am really enjoying it
Thanks for the video! Before you mentioned it, I did not know about pruning lilac. :) Also, the coffee cake looked yummy; sorry it was a bit dry. A tablespoon or two of melted vanilla or black walnut ice cream mixed in it may help that. I think the base dough could be used with many kinds of fruit (like apple). See you next Friday! :)
Great video. It's a long weekend including Monday. My garden and my sewing machine needs some attention. I grow my own sunflowers every year. This year every single grain has come. I will spread them all over the garden. Love them
I am a little late commenting, I like that you put the strawberries in a jar to keep. I have been doing that with chopped onions and peppers and they really do keep for quite a while. And when they are in the fridge in the jar they are clear and easy to see, so I don't forget about them. Plus, with the vibrant colors they still look delicious.
I have the same sifter as you do!😂 Strawberries are sweet this year. I made strawberry wine 😮. But my favorite way to eat them is all by themselves Yum! Boy you got a good deal on those bagels! Thanks for the video!
We have a local high-end bagel shop and if you were to buy a dozen bagels from that would cost you about $15. They have day-old bagels for 3.25 for half a dozen we usually stock up and then just put them in the freezer same way you have done.
Uggg....We have 2, maybe 3 hoses left to replace on our new to us truck; already purchased, a leak to trace (think newer than the original) and likely some yet additional antifreeze. We are getting ready for a bare bones in anticipation of our late June SS income being late or maybe not at all; the goal is to at least halve our routine monthly income to spread 2 or more months. Had we not cash flowed a new-to-us truck in April, spent some money on it in May, then (after the May TLC $), discovered we had some water leak problems, we might even had had a small yard sale budget for the weekend, debit ceiling limit problems withstanding.
@@FrugalMoneySaver There are times you can grumble but better not complain like when you're behind someone traveling 35mph in a 35mph zone but you're late/ used to doing a good 45mph. On the way home from yesterday's mandatory trip some miles away with 2 extra stops under the shade of trees during the tail end of rush hour - We stopped to the auto parts store close to home to order a fan clutch (the thing to move the fan by the radiator), a better quality Ford thermostat, and a $5 o-ring specifically designed for the thermostat. In actually taking things apart it looks like we'll be able to return the expensive hose and we can return what we dont use at par. While I'm grumbling, so far we've spent less than a fully unknown, non running vehicle of the same would have cost us including the repairs we've paid to have done and those we've done ourselves. Just paying to have the 2 easiest hoses replaced for us (hoses included) is about the same as all the cooling system parts we're doing the R&R on/ with. We are talking about an almost 24 year old truck that sat where the blackberries grow for 8 to 10 years; every couple of decades, some of that original equipment needs some attention....Still, I had visions of some yard saling.
OMG, I was dying to get to the end of the video to meet Beatrice; I didn't even skip ahead. You had my rolling with laughter when Beatrice was revealed. I thought for sure you got another fur baby. You guys really got a terrific deal on those bagels and a few pastries for $3.99! Now that's the way to stretch your pennies. We just do the usual for Memorial Day, hotdogs, burgers, watermelon, corn on the cob and whatever else we want to throw on the grill. I'm thinking of making an ambrosia for dessert.
Im curious about Beatrice! I look forward to seeing your next video. We are working arounf the house and just having some brats and potatoes. Good to gear your voice and thank you for a great video.
I love these weekly videos, we're all busier in the summer, and I don't have time to watch 2 videos! Glad it's working out for you too. Love your videos much. Hello from ND!
Hi Emmy, just love your blouse combination, those colours are great on you 😍😍. Also thanks for showing that bagel guilottine ! What a nifty little gadget. Lots of love, hope you and Paul had a relaxing Weekend.❤️❤️
If you've got lard, cold lard is a more similar substitute to shortening and often costs less than butter. Of course, if you're going to use lard you have to have it on the shelf.
We have just started this sourdough process. We are honestly learning as we go. If you attempt this please note if your starter has any (even tiny) spots or streaks of yellow, orange, pink or green, or your starter has any mold growing throughout it, or if it turns an odd color, or has a really foul odor do not use it! Discard it...
Love ur garden. I wish I had a spot for a garden, I have almost an acre of land but I don't have any spot that gets enough sun, I have so many trees. Have a safe weekend
I’m making sourdough bread myself today. Once you get a healthy starter going, you can keep it for months in the fridge without feeding. Just pour off the hooch and scrape off any discolored starter and feed again.
We are laying low this weekend, ill be crocheting. Hubby is having some heslth issues following a car accident, so we are nursing him back to health. Thanks for the ideas. Look forward to seeing Beatrice's growth! ( thats my middle name by the way!)❤❤❤❤❤
I loved this video. Baking bread is on my bucket list, and you were so helpful with Beatrice. Emmie, your hair is so perfect and lovely. Thank you and God bless you both.

To start the weekend off I made steamed spiced shrimp for dinner along with a homemade cocktail sauce and then some sweet potato oven fries. It was delish if I do say so myself - and I do say so myself, lol. ☺ Hubby and I just did a shot of Jack Daniel's toasting all of the people who have given their lives in defense of this country. On Monday we will be having Hebrew National Hot dogs which is a fav of mine that I rarely eat because I rarely eat red meat and nothing so highly processed. But a couple of times a year it's okay. We'll have baked beans and the housemate is going to pick up some corn on the cob at the farmers market. I will be doing some work in the garden tomorrow. The cucumber plants are coming along nicely but need some supports as well as the tomatoes. I also need to harvest lettuce. All in all, I'm looking forward to a nice relaxing long weekend. Thanks for another good vlog!
I thank you for the great strawberry tip for keeping them fresh! I’m trying it so looking forward to the beautiful strawberries I bought yesterday staying fresher! They are so good this time of year. Thanks again!
I remember my mother sifted and then measured the amount called for in the recipe. If you measured and then sifted perhaps that's why it wasn't like a batter. It still looked delicious!
Ordered our first to good to go from our favorite donut shop/bakery tomorrow. We are so excited to see what fun treats we get, while saving waste and enjoying donuts for a fraction of the price. Thanks for sharing!
I just tried this for berries and it works great at extending their shelf life and getting the pesticides and stuff off them…soak them for 10 mins in 1 cup white vinegar & 2 cups water. Strain and rinse w/ water. Dry the berries on a towel and then put in a container w/ a paper towel on top to absorb any moisture. My 13-year-old nephew is visiting this weekend snd we are going to have a fun city day exploring.
Great video! 😊 it would be great if you could show exactly how you prep meals for a long road trip like to the Little House-when it is more than just sandwiches for lunch. Helpful with summer road trips! TY!
I downloaded the Too good To Go app, but there are no stores or restaurants anywhere around here that use it. I was bummed. I have a sourdough starter in my fridge that is still going strong after several years. I sometimes ignore it for WEEKS, but then bring it out, pour off the "hooch" and feed it again. It's never failed me! Can't wait to see some new ideas for using sourdough starter!
Miss yourTuesday videos but happy that you have prioritized your time to spend it doing what is important. 🙏Prayers that Pauls parents stay well I have been using that jar and fruit tip for years. It is great! I do put a tag on it to wash before eating.😅
I tried the too good to go app finding it somehow recently and it was in an Italian restaurant.. and we got 5 big slices of pizza and for $5 but it was far n felt not great and I stopped using that app after that one time.. but seeing you am inspired to try it in a bakery Or grocery shop next time and will do good to earth n our wallet 😊 thanks for sharing it and I enjoyed the baking from the book you got❤❤
I’m interested in seeing how your version works. Others I have watched said no metal tools or utensils. So many versions of how to do this and I DO want to try this soon. Thanks for the inspiration!!

I had a lilac bush that grew so big that the local police asked us to trim it back as it was on a corner and hard to see around it. Dh cut it all down. Made me sad but the beautiful scent made my allergies really bad. I still have my mother's sifter from when she was a young bride. She would have been 100 yrs old in July. I just became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I am going to go see my ancestor's grave tomorrow. I signed up my daughter and myself to go to a local brewery that will convert itself to Revolutionary times and have a story teller, bagpipes and some re-enactors for the night. Free beer with our ticket and as I don't drink dd will get my beer.
Great video! I'll be taking the boy to a friend's house sometime this weekend for a visit. He's only been to the vet and groomer and needs a stress free destination... if that makes sense. Lol! I need to do some work outside... trimming bushes, spreading mulch, and planting veggies & flowers. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
❤Happy weekend! We are planning on having the first BBQ of the year on Sunday, preparations are in progress. It is slowly getting warmer here too. Most of my lilac froze, we had some frost when the blossoms came up. We did prune them wrong too and the result was no blossoms in the spring. Thanks for the great advice. See you Tuesday!❤
Thanks for another informative video. We’re having strawberry cake for dinner tonight. And the easy sourdough starter is something I’m going to try. Some sound so difficult so this one sounds fabulous. 💕
I’m still working with the sourdough starter it’s definitely a learning process as we go! Hopefully I’ll be able to share the rest of the process with you next Friday.
Also Joanne if you attempt this please note if your starter has any (even tiny) spots or streaks of yellow, orange, pink or green, or your starter has any mold growing throughout it, or if it turns an odd color, or has a really foul odor do not use it! Discard it...
Thanks for that bit of info. I think I’ll need to wait for spring here n Australian, our winters aren’t not as cold as yours, but still probably too cold to begin a starter. But come spring I’ll be giving it a go. Went out to buy my strawberries and they were still green on the top so will swap blueberries and see how that goes. Enjoy your weekend🌼🌼🌼
What an interesting video Emmy and Paul! I'm really enjoying the mix of things you put into each video. The flowers were beautiful and that cake looked so delicious. Amazing to see how many bagels etc you were given. I absolutely loved how you were gifted the bagel guillotine as well; I thought that was marvellous! It's a bank holiday weekend in the UK, but not a memorial one. May God bless your weekend in the US. I hope you have a wonderful week.❤
