One Minute Budapest is a series of short interviews of expats who tell their stories why they ended up in Hungary. It is an opportunity for each to share a little bit about themselves in a minute or less, although it tends to go a little more than that.
Larry moved to Hungary in 2005 after visiting for a holiday with his family. Originally from Boyle Heights in the Los Angeles area, the travel bug hit him as a teenager which led him to experience travel and music in Europe. He really never looked back. The rest is history.
Here he gives us a glimpse of his life just outside of Budapest. His insight to what it’s like to live in Hungary and the differences that give us a unique perspective when we plant our flag in another country is spot on that most of us can relate to.

I was told VERY little about my ancestry/heritage on my mom's side & my dad didn't know anything about his side, so I felt a bit lost until 2 yrs ago.. Turns out I'm VERY Hungarian 😆 (I have the oddball nose in my family, it's my GGmother Auers nose) I've never been to Hungary, but desperately want to (one day finances & health permitting) I watch & read as much as I can find, especially on Szeged & Sutto Ezstergom. because my Ggrandmother Auer & family immigrated to America from Sutto just before WWI. They opened a Hungarian~ Viennese restaurant in Chicago & my older ancestral Gparents declared Magyar as their language. My GGGfather Joseph Auer worked on the Ezstergom Bascilica Cathedral & uncle Sandor Auer the newer Votive Church in Szeged (the alter was one treasure he crafted) The Catholic Church Bishops records have my family recorded for generations, mainly in Sutto, Ezstergom. It's amazing to know people all over the world appreciate Hungary & what my family was blessed to have contributed to the rich heritage & history. I can't imagine this gentleman hasn't visited the Votive Church. I thank you & others who are willing to share the less tourist, deeper parts of Hungarian life. It helps others, at least me who cannot afford to go, feel a great sense of belonging & connection. Thank you !!!!

Hi Missy, you definitely have to come here. Szeged and Esztergom are beautiful towns. The Basilica in Esztergom is really exceptional😍. I don't know much about Süttő but I'm giving my appreciation in advance.😉🙋🏻‍♀️🇭🇺

As a Hungarian-American /naturalised and spent all my working years in the USA/ I was expat in Budapest (2006-2015). To me Americans were nicer but I also took many great things for granted in Hungary - I admit now. The folk song says perhaps best:-"Boldogsàgot adni is kell...Nemcsak mindig kérni!"-

@sellingbudapest

There is a music scene here, a mix of Hungarian musicians and foreigners from the US, UK, Ireland, Czech Republic, Romania and many more playing in bands. There are live music venues, new and old, with weekly concerts and open mics. Look out soon for a video about this topic as I will explore more in detail.

Are there still young people in the countryside or are they almost all pensioners?
@N7sensei
@N7sensei 8 дней назад
Very few young people in the countryside. Most of the economic opportunities concentrate around the capitol, Budapest. Out of the 9.5 mil people, 3 million live in either Budapest, or its surrounding area. The 2nd largest city only has 210k souls, and we only have 9 cities in total with over 100k people. If you don't live around Budapest, you will probably live a slow life, with not much money, unless you work remotely, IT or something.

Of course, let everyone come to live in Hungary, because we love everyone. We are not xenophobic. But then how much real estate is left for the Hungarians? And don't you think this incineration process will raise real estate prices? Well, no one cares about that except those who can't buy real estate.

the only reason I am not moving to Hungary is due to its corruption, I am coming from Greece and things are so bad here, that we have over 150.000 young people leaving the country every year for the past year, since 2011. If I knew how bad corruption is in Hungary and if it's liveable I would move there.
@attilakovacs6428

Where is corruption present in your daily life? In Hungary, corruption is perhaps experienced in businesses. For certain licenses. If you choose a job as an employee, you will not encounter corruption.

@N7sensei

Corruption is bad in Hungary, but nowhere near as bad as in the US, and from what I know in Greece (I have some Greek friends).
@juz3r1
@juz3r1 День назад
What is corruption in Greece? In Hungary at the moment it means that Hungarian companies are now winning more tenders than foreign ones. Nothing more. Why? Because foreign companies have bought up a large part of industry and then closed it down to market their own product. That's why the current government has changed. This is called corruption in the main stream media abroad. And believe me, in Paris it is Reanault that wins the police car tender and not BMW.

The current government respect working people. 90% of Hungarians respect working people not the ones rely on others for handouts. There are more jobs available than workers. If you do not have a proper skills learn a new one to make money. Simple as that. Lazy people should not be warded with rich life.
@The_Catnip
@The_Catnip 8 месяцев назад
That number is way too high, where did you get that? There are waaay more job opportunities than 10 years ago and the salary is better. Of course we have inflation but that is a worldwide thing. Yeah, we are not rich as the West but seeing the current state of Westy countries and their entitlement, I think it is better to stay simple and humble. But you can go to Westy Europe if you want. They give you free vacancy and stuff, you can go to work in German or Danish factories or farms, you can work on boats.
