Educate every child and start now. All the way through 12 to 15 years. In 50 years all this will be a bad memory. Education is the key to all poverty everywhere. Smart people team up to fix things and make them better.
It's true. You heard the guy near the end. They don't know what to do, they are waiting on the government. The adult population is made up of uneducated fishermen. Schooling is definitely the answer. Allow their children to branch out into different professions that are healthier and wealthier and that help the economy more then fishing those polluted waters.
@@defcon2544 Never hard to spot the bigot anywhere blacks are being made to look bad. Meanwhile your forefathers caused all this and all that you still enjoy today. Ignoramus.
This would be a nice place to live but it's so polluted. Can someone please help these people. It's wonderful that people from different cultures live together. They have a wonderful community!!!
It's 2015. I wonder what was the outcome? Why couldn't a fisherman town be conceived? One with proper sanitation, bathroom facilities, a tubing from home to a sewage system? If the people have been on the water for a hundred years there has to be some give and take.
it will shock you that i was born in makoko and studied there. Makoko is filled with talents and potentials, the area is not as bad as shown. watching alone would not solve the issues but you can choose to do something positive. thanks
Why do they always want the government to help them. Why don't they try help themselves by cleaning up their garbage and take some pride of where they live. "One can be poor, but can be clean and still work to up lift the area they live.
If the is no waste collection and disposal services provided by the government how do u expect them to clean up the area? Where do u want them to dispose the thousands of tons of rubbish? Government must do their job and provide these basic services for their citizens
Both of you are right. And that was my first thought. The personal mess is their responsibility, but the trash and this horrible living condition is the government's. You have to remember that none of them have running water, and there are no toilets or a sewage system so they are defecating in the lagoon.
@@personofinterest6813 i dont blame the people at all. If theres no system of collecting the rubbish theres is absolutely nothing the people can do. They cant afford private rubbish collectors.
This is SOO interesting! I am so intrigued by this community I have so many questions! Like how did they begin the building of this village.. what water do they drink .. or what do they do with the dead..?
Makoko has a huge potential... it could turn into a beautiful place, with chances to everyone... hopefully there will be at some stage the effort to do it, not to destroy it🙏
We have to build a world-class floating house in Makoko like that of Ijburg (amsterdam)... Venice, Italy... Palm Islands... Khazar Islands... Float house Victoria... Seattle houseboat... Floating homes neighborhood, Portland... The Venetian Macao
"to some, this is the only place where their dreams can be realized". Good journalism? Realizing dreams in what appears to be an open sewer system called Makoko?
Martin B: Yes, a fantastic job! Thank you for teaching me something I never knew existed ... so much. A beautiful video in just so many ways! I like watching it take!
We have to complain find something better to say. Like, how we don’t all pool together and help poor people or how the rich people stuck to themself’s and fail to help the poor. Can you imagine if we all put together and help?
This seams to be all over Africa , India , and alot , of Indonesia. People are poor all over the world but accepting the filthy conditions that this place has is shocking and very dangerous!
+MJack2255 As basic as I can put it, The bottoms of those logs are pointed, with enough repeated force it will drive deep enough to stand stable in the water.
I thought about that but I couldn't figure out how they get it started because the poles are long and I was curious what equipment would first be used to start it going into the ground. Get what I'm sayin? Once it's started, I know they just keep hammering it into the ground but how do they start these long ass poles without cranes or anything. I guess ropes and pulley's would be my guess. I'm always fascinated by how people can live in what would seem like unlivable places.
Let's educate them about environmental issues, build more schools, clean up the water, keep the structures, they are tourist attraction sites and leave these people to live their lives in peace. Suit and tie isn't wisdom and strategy at all times. Are we willing to embrace the most efficient solution or we are just going to keep regurgitating grammar and town planning jargon?
Why are foreigners coming to in to fund schools in Makoko and paying their salaries? What is the government doing for the residents? What is Sanwo-Olu's plans for the place? Why are outsiders the ones coming to the rescue? Shouldn't Africans be solving African problems?
I thought the man at 18:30 makes a lot of sense, but he said there is a school nearby. I saw another video where the kids said their school is 2 hours away so they don't go. I'm so confused. smh
@@Kekulebenzene On wood stilts, many of which are very old piers from previous wood shanties. Or they cut down trees and just stand them up and nail stuff to them, whatever they can find. No concrete piers here , ever. They need to be moved to dry land which is available a few miles away. This is just pitiful. Human beings living like this. wtf
I am flabbergasted at the LASG official. NFA, and what? People are not supposed to live on the lagoon? Oh my God, as if he never heard of Venice. Shocking. You see these people? This is 2019 and what has happened to Makoko. Rehabilitate and don't destroy Makoko!!!
It would have been nice if the English translator would have muted the louder spoken foreign language. I didn't understand a word. it was like watching two TV shows at the same time.
It's amazing how people like to trash talk poverty. You can go to New Orleans and find homeless people sleeping under the bridge. So are they all uneducated?
May God finish blessing this village with high hopes of rebuilding and making things right... I will never degrade anyone whom making a living for themselves.. I love to see that everyone including children works hard.. That's something the United States need more of... I am honored to view how this place function without the government help... May God bless the creator Nd the Ppl
Maybe instead of sitting around thumbing your holes complaining about no jobs, you can organize a clean up effort with all the young boys who cant seem to find employment? Too much to ask I assume??
DankCommitted no I don’t think that’s to much to ask for. They should have started the process of cleaning up their environment many many many years ago.
For anyone watching this for geography GCSE factfile or whatever: Notes about: Sewage, sanitation, education, lagoon/rivers (transport, littered, cramped, dirty), government, healthcare, jobs (fishing, selling), homes (quality, relocation, materials, capacity) That should be enough :)
We as human beings deserve to live how we choose wrapped in our culture ,traditions Please God wrap your wings of protection around those beautiful people of makoko .
Petro Jenkins good we don.t wan't your asses to come neither. because if you do . you only gonna be looking how to steal our miniral resouses. so please stay were you are. thank you very mush . and i mean that from the very bottom of my hearth. . we are sick and tierd of thieves like you
This is appalling! Buhari is the president now and should relocate these people to decent homes. The people would be of great asset to the country due to their skills and resilience. Please government MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE and we would have more respect for you.
"Decent homes", but kills them colective networks, them jobs, their way of life destroyed. this could have worst effects in these people and their progress. The urgent issue here, is cleaning the water now to improve fishing activity and to stop diseases, and allowing to supply basic services... schools, markets, power supply, sewerage. That's the positive change.
nigeria. makoko is one of the most interesting places about ur country. its best to collaborate with the people of makoko to preserve it and help make it more appealing. the venice of africa
These people are actually happy, yes, an outsider would never know how to survive in this, but the people born into this place have a system that seems to be working
@@jacobjacob4139 As long as you have a brain and able body you can avoid the filth by not making it and live in it and that's a choice! There are millions of really poor people in other parts of the world that don't even have water and their living conditions are not filthy.
@@telubrico We also need to accept that we're endowed with different brain capacities, and what you call filth maybe I call it home, or my source of my livelihood. Also remember why they refused to move inland? Because their only skill is fishing, fishing in that "filth" means survival to them.
How do they not get sick from eating the fish out of that water? How do the babies not crawl or walk into the water out of their homes? Crazy where humans can survive.
cleanliness nurse has everything to do with it I would not want to live next door to somebody that never cut the grass never took the trash out never shovel there snow are kept you are clean I would not leave one of the Lynn there I would find some way to get rid of them and say the same thing there everybody sits and pisses in the river and throws our shity diapers or City close everything into the river instead of taking it back and putting everything in the back and take it to the trash taking it to the dump that's all it takes and I guarantee you it would change they would let you live in houses fix up your house isn't bored I'm up taking put new roofs on keep them clean it's got a lot to do with cleaning this yes it does I don't care what you think clean this is the best thing
No sanitation. start by cleaning up the waterways. The reason that the state isn't moving is because they figure that it's easier if they don't acknowledge it or deny that it's a problem. Out of sight, out of mind. But as soon as the local government starts to take matters into their own hands and start cleaning up the waterways themselves the state wants to come in claim that they did all the work. Once the state takes over and clean up then they'll want to start moving people out and start courting developers. Makoko is a prime location on the water and developers are watching that place like vultures. We experienced that here in America. Most notably Harlem. 70s and 80's you couldn't pay a white person to come north of 110th street but once Bill Clinton put an office in Harlem they cleaned Harlem up , brought in developers and priced everyone else out. Gentrification. The Makoko leaders can work together to get that trash out of the waters as long as they don't let the state move in and take over. Also they would have to find a central location or a way to dispose of the trash. But it could be done.
Exactly. What I don't understand is why would they wait until it's time for their homes to get destroyed to start talking about cleaning up the area. They should be keeping their community clean to begin with, even a dog doesn't shit where it sleeps & eat.

Where does the human waist go?. How do they bury their dead? How are they treat any illness and the environment surrounded by waste in the water so I'm sure it's in the air as well. I need answers
@@dawnlittle2501 In the area's where i lived as a child in Antwerp , the streets where always clean , now that there are living a lot of foreigners the streets are very dirty too and there is each day a service that comes to clean up the streets but it doesn't stay long clean. Most is about education and laziness and culture.
why do you keep having children when you have no resources? Unbelievable. All those people, and none of them can get together to CLEAN UP THAT AREA?????? Give me a break.
How do they bury their dead, how do they go to the toilets, how do they build those houses how do they manage to fix the pole in the water, how deep is the water.. Many questions not addressed in this documentary
