#LivingInWinnipeg #RelocatingToWinnipeg #MovingToWinnipeg
St Norbert is the southern-most community that is part of the City of Winnipeg. It is also the only community included in the City of Winnipeg that resides south of the Perimeter highway that surrounds most of Winnipeg.
St. Norbert has a storied history and was an important area with regards to the fur trade, and first became developed by the Metis Nation in the early to mid 1800’s. The area was highly desirable due to its location to major trades and transportation routes. Being situated along Pembina highway, or the Pembina Trail as it was known in the 19th century, the settlement was perfect for people who wanted to work seasonal jobs for the Hudson Bay Company by moving goods from Upper Fort Garry, or what is now downtown Winnipeg, to St. Paul Minnesota which was the nearest railway head at the time.
To this day St. Norbert boasts one of the highest French/english bi-lingual populations within Winnipeg.
As settlement occurred in the mid 1800’s you can still find homes in the area that were constructed as early as the beginning of 1900 - 1920. The majority of homes in the area however, were constructed between the 1960’-1980’s with some newer construction still happening on the west side of Pembina highway into the 2000’s.
Most of St. Norbert is made up of single family homes of all shapes and sizes from smaller attached townhomes to larger estates along Rue Des Trappistes along the Seine river and Rue St Pierre along the banks of the Red river. If you are more interested in Condominium living the area also has a number of condo developments along Pembina Highway just south of the perimeter that offer multiple options for sizes and layouts to fit many budgets and tastes.
St. Norbert is located approximately 20 km away from the Winnipeg International airport and approximately 15 km from downtown Winnipeg.
The closest hospital is the Victoria General Hospital which is located approximately 5 km north of St. Norbert on Pembina highway and is an easy 10-15 minute drive from most of St. Norbert.
The population of St. Norbert is approximately 5,500 people as of the last census. The two largest age ranges in St Norbert are those between 10-20 years of age and those between 55-64 years of age. Approximately 59% of people in the area are married or common law and of those couples around 41% have children.
Average household income in the are is $87,000 and just over 80% of homes in the area are owner occupied.
St. Norbert and surrounding areas are part of the Seine River School Division. This school division has 16 schools 4 of which service the St. Norbert catchment area. Being a large francophone and bilingual area there are options for both English and French immersion school tracks. Parc La Salle school is an English school offering programs for Kindergarten to grade 4. English students will continue for middle years with grades 5-8 at La Barriere crossing school. For French immersion Ecole st. Norbert offers programming from Kindergarten up to grade 8. St. Norbert Collegiate is the high school in the area and offers a dual track program for both English and French immersion students.
Shopping in St. Norbert focuses mostly on smaller strip malls and mom and pop stores with the Co Op supermarket being the major retailer in the area.
St Norbert also boasts one of the best farmers markets in the city of Winnipeg. In the summer on Wednesdays and Saturdays you can find multiple vendors both inside and outside the market building. In the winter they are open Saturday and Sunday. This market draws tons of people each day, offers amazing produce, home made gifts, baking goods and other local vendors.
St. Norberts community center offers both indoor and outdoor hockey rinks, a baseball diamond, soccer field, tennis courts and the hockey rink seconds as a basketball court in the summer. There is also a splash pad perfect for children in the summer months.
St Norbert has an abundance of green and park spaces throughout the area including the St Nobert provincial heritage park and the trappiest monastery provincial park. On top of that there are over a dozen other parks in the area including Payment park, Grandmont park, Trottier park and one of the more unique parks in the city Pollock island which is situated within an oxbow of the La Salle river and can only be accessed when Red and La Salle rivers are in a low water state.
