This is sad because there is so much rich culture that is part of Trinidad Carnival. Yes there is drinking and revelry and you do not have to be a part of it if it is against your religion. However to not experience steel-pan which brings people from all over the world together and the kids in their costumes and the lyrical poetry of Calypso is such a pity. It makes me wonder if a Trini were to become Mormon does it mean they must abandon their culture and become just another drone with no identity. It kind of smacks of colonialism.
I experienced steel pan and many other things. I was deep into the culture and the members of the church did carnival as well. The missionaries just have different rules. Your culture is amazing by the way and one day I will return and experience carnival.
Carnival monday and Tuesday is a big part of our culture (its considered the last party before fasting). The Wednesday is called Ash Wednesday and it marks the beginning of lent.
I love in Trinidad and Carnival is only two days, Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday, which are two public holidays. Wednesday is Ash Wednesday but that's not a holiday.
