I did as many courses as I could to gain skills and at 55 got a job as a medical receptionist. I'm now 62 and still working. The Health industry welcomes older people.

I love Ms. White. She appears honest. She ought to be employed now. She comes across quite respectably. Good Luck to her and the whole panel.

Shop at the yard or estate sales for $50 every week for old stuff and sell them online for $200 or more. We paid off our cars and house.

In loving memory of Alene and Guy Dorsey, who were people of color. Alene got all the food for our family, but Alene died of stomach cancer. Guy worked at the Ford factory, but he also passed away. I was their flower girl.

I am grateful to have heard of and learned of her story. #MsElizabethWhite #Consultant #Fifty-five #Ageism #Unemployed #FakingNormal #CandidConversations #BlackBerryArt

Encourage the Big Accounting firms to have a orogram where they hire Seniors to assist with busy season and cinsulting projects. They wont hire over tge,age of 35. They complain they can't find help. There's a pool of 40-60 year olds who want to work there.

Wow. So, most people don’t save enough for retirement...but for those who DID, they lost most of it when the economy tanked. No wonder a lot of people just live for today and say the hell with saving. I’m in one of the few career paths left that have a good pension, but who knows what will happen? Social Security has been “borrowed” from by the government and now they don’t want to pay it back, so they want to cut benefits. I have concern that something will happen that wipes me out right when I’m ready to retire, so I try to diversify my savings so it’s not all in one financial vehicle.
@blackworldtraveler3711

tvdavis Well actually "living for today" and "the hell with saving" through the years is what got many baby boomers in trouble. I'm doing fine and retiring early.

Came here with new wife more than 30 years ago from a third world country with only college degrees, both worked for the local govt., lived a very frugal life and I retired real early. Kids have both professional degrees and making excellent money. It is doable with hard work, patience and frugality.

I always plans of working in the medical field as I do. However, I had other talents like art that but experiencing some losses, I realized that was a farce. Although I’ve never been very good at saving money I’m happy that I made my choice. Like you I’m so worried about the future.

UNFORTUNATELY THERE NEEDS TO BE POLICY TO ENSURE THAT THE WEALTH IS NOT CONSENTRATED IN THE HANDS OF A FEW. THERE HAS TO BE OWNERSHIP OF RESOURCES AMONGST LOWER LEVELS OF THE CLASSES.

she might have lost everything in 2008 anyway. Stop missing the point and blaming individuals instead honestly critiquing the hollow, self seeking international economy which is consumer based and wants to pursue the highest profits for the lowest salaries.

What is with the 2008 401k Market collapse excuse? If you had put 100% of your money at the ultimate worst time in the market (Beginning of Nov 2007) You would have recovered all of your money (assuming S&P 500) by March 2012 (6 ½ years ago) Today (Nov 2018) you would have 2.25 times your original investment. Again, that is assuming the worst (you invested 100% right before the collapse)

Why do most here seem unauthentic to me. Nothing new here. Its called surviving, and using common sense. Most of us do it. When you age out at work,you reinvent yourself. Working as a janitor, or campground is not demeaning work. What are you people talking about? Your old. Of coarse you’re not going to be able to work as you did before. Privileged liberals drive me nuts. If you didn’t save, and took large risks, assuming you alone could succeed. You’re bound to fail. If you overspent, you made your bed. Stop whining, and reinvent yourself. Most of us do, and things work out just fine. But since most liberals live for themselves, and don’t follow traditional values. You get middle aged, living beyond your means, single, childless, adults, who live life surrounded by self, and ME. Of coarse it’s not going to end well. Come to Los Angeles. You will see the growing tent community turning our city into a 3rd world.
