We collect our own water by harvesting but recently our sources are all dry. How do we cope in this situation? It's so dry. the olives and almonds aren't even producing fruit.

I live in the desert in Arizona, US. Right now it’s 8% humidity out and it’s in the low 100sF here. About 38C. I can’t remember the last time it rained. Your setup is in place to capture any rainfall. Well done!

Andy and Sharon, I have watched your videos for about a year now, and I have seen your land in many of your videos. I know you are in a dessert type of location and I am always amazed that the trees and bushes that I do see are green given the view, knowing you have had no rain!

Guttering and smaller tanks on every available roof, in the short to medium term, so that you capture every possible drop, rather than letting it run off onto land that is not productive. In Australia we go through cycles of drought and floods also. Luckily and the reverse to you guys, we are in a wetter cycle (La Nina) rather than a dry cycle (El Nino) at the moment.

Watch out when it does rain. We don't want to see what has been happening in Dubai. Put in rock gabions. What is a gabion retaining wall? A gabion wall is a retaining wall made of stacked stone-filled, heavy duty wire mesh tied together with wire. Gabion walls are usually battered (angled back towards the slope), or stepped back with the slope, rather than stacked vertically. Technically anything that prevents retention of soil and runoff water could act as a gabion. Ingenuity is called for, which you two have plenty of. I'm a great believer in the rain dance. The Australian indigenous peoples do it ( or used to, ). I think it has to do with creating Energy fields. There was even a play made into a film about some such event. It worked!
@FincaLife
@FincaLife Месяц назад
Would the rain dance only work on our property or would it benefit the local area too? What, after a successful rain dance, it rained locally but missed our property? We'll have to look into this more scientifically...

The rain in spain stays mainly in the plain.... Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge are responsible for authorising cloud seeding, though Spain only does now or recently changed its policy, to save or protect crops on a local level. So you may get rain if it gets dire.. Keep happy, and dont forget to video the dance, it may be your greatest vid ever :)

Hi Sharon and Andy, our fica is more northern than yours but still the same problems! We are showering in a bucket and reusing the water to flush the loo. Sometimes using this water first to mop the floors first before flushing the loo. The water then is used three times. Sometimes using on plants as long as showering products are not harmful to plants. Hope you get rain soon

My tuxedo cat used to roll in the dirt then try to come inside. I'd hold him down and wipe him down with a towel. I think the lighter color helps them stay cooler in the heat and maybe camouflages them for hunting. Helps clean their fur too. I hope your water cost doesn't go up due to such extensive drought conditions.

I'm amazed by those pine trees looking so healthy when even the olive trees are looking dry! I wonder what their secret is? You would normally expect the pines to have a very shallow root system, while the olives will go deep. I wonder if the pine foliage is acting like a fog net on these cooler, cloudy days through the winter? Or perhaps they are just better at accessing the slight ground-surface moisture when you get that 0.5mm of rain, which never reaches down to where the olive and rosemary roots are.

Bruce Charles "Bill" Mollison (4 May 1928 - 24 September 2016) was an Australian researcher, author, scientist, teacher and biologist. In 1981, he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award "for developing and promoting the theory and practice of permaculture". He travelled and taught globally with remarkable results. City people ( and the Irish and the Scots) don't know what it's like to be as dry as a bone that has been sitting out in the sun for 20 yrs.

It's terrible around here this year too. As a few have said more of the farmers around here need to move to permaculture. Our land is dry but not as bad as those who are ploughing and drying it out more. My permaculture design course with Geoff Lawton is slowly paying off. Hope you can get the farmers in your area to change their ways. There is an initiative in this region Alvelal. They do cover parts of Granada, Almeria and Murcia but I don't know if they are as far as you. Check out La Junquera who are in your region.

I wish you a heavy shower each night for a few months!👍👍 The weather here in Shetland has been splendid recently, but the heat and the wind quickly dry out the ground, however, the rain started yesterday evening and it has continued off and on since then, I have a Whitebeam and a Horse Chestnut in the garden and they are really benefiting from the rain as is everything else.

Thank you but it's unlikely now that it will rain until end of September / October. Normally it rains heavily here in autumn and spring. We missed it again and can only hope for decent rain at the end of summer. It's only going to get hotter and drier now for the next 4 months. Enjoy your rain :)

This was a very interesting video. How deep is your water table there? The reason I asked is , You could run a sand point to the water table under ground? I don't know if you would understand what I am saying because of different terminology. Drilling a well is expensive here so it must be there too. If you don't have a water table there under your land ,Sorry. I live 200 feet above the river valley in Iowa. My well is 180 feet deep. I will pray for rain for Spain and you two.😊

@@user-jn1ci9yz7d lol, yes. All our black and grey water goes to water the plants and trees on the land. We personally have no shortage of water, we can get it trucked in. It's the land that's seriously suffering.... and not just here, in all of southern Spain. It's a much bigger problem than we, as individuals, can deal with. We do what we can but on the scale of things, it's like pissing in the sea. The aim of the video was to explain how it is, as we get many suggestions about what we can do to bring this desertified area back to life, none of which we can achieve without rain - which we don't get. Apologies if we missed the mark

it was always obvious that you are living in an extremely dry area, but this video showed how bad it really is. The downside of 365 days of sunshine. Would be interesting to know how much you have to pay for a truckload to compare it to the cost of mains water.

Follow Geoff Lawton, - the Australian permaculture expert. "Greening the desert in Jordan." RU-vid. Nothing could be as difficult as turning a dry and parched earth into a flourishing oasis. IT CAN BE DONE. Trees create condensation. Chop and drop. YES. you do have to have some water. AND, if you have no rain, try capturing precipitation with condensation capture through moisture on the hills and in the air with special nets. The problem is, with the soil so dry as it is, it does not allow ANY moisture into the soil molecules. You've got to invest in covering the soil with old hay or straw and keeping what you have in trees by keeping them watered and nourished. It's a huge expense but so is abandoning the farm. Buying in water as you have done, is one of the solutions. Check out Bill Mollison ( now deceased, 2016.) who started this movement way back in the 1970's in Australia.
