We are a travel couple, looking for a non-mainstream life of living aboard a boat and cruising in the Caribbean/Bahamas in Winter, and the Great Lakes in Summer. Working when we can to fill the cruising kitty. We have sold everything we own, and we now own a cruising yacht. We have chosen to do this voyaging in a powerboat/motor vessel, instead of the popular sailing route.
Our mission is to help inspire people to live their dreams earlier in life, instead of waiting until retirement. So often retirement dreams are dashed by health issues or other unforeseen later life circumstances. If you have a dream, then dream, plan, and do it now. We hope to make you smile, and spark the urning in your heart for fulfilling your dreams.

Good glorious morning to you all! This one is a little longer form, so we can spend a little more time with you. 😉 In this episode, we are in the Northern Exumas, and we keep jockeying for position against the strong clocking winter winds of the Bahamas. *What would you do in these conditions? Keep riding things out at anchorages or jump into a marina?* Hope you enjoy this one. We know it's been a long time coming. Be Free, Seek Adventure, Live Simply Shel & Cyndi

Marinas are for fair weather boaters. IF you have the ground tackle and you are good about doing maintenance then I would just tuck in and treat any weather as an experience. When I was cruising the Bahamas back in 2002 I was anchored off of Green Turtle. The weather moved in and a micro squall popped up with lightning and the whole show. I just threw out the 2nd anchor and enjoyed it with a cold snack. Or two.
@SearchingforCShels

@@DIYDaveT Don't disagree, and we have the ground tackle. 250 feet of chain. Sometimes though, when working like we are, we need to focus on work instead of the weather. Also a marina every now and then won't hurt. We spend the majority of our time on anchor, and have rode out many a storm. Some of the strongest winds we have ever encountered has been on anchor. Held firm every time. Cheers!

Hi guys, Captain Mike out here in Nassau. Good to see you back on the air (video) waves. Might be your best cinematography yet! Remember we got a dock for you here in Lyford Cay if you need an overnight. Give me some notice to make sure we'll be here. One more thing, I've taken 60 feet with 5 ft draft up into Norman's Pond to weather some of those week long wind events. You can do it! Not easy, but if you chart it first with your dingy, it's not dangerous.
@SearchingforCShels

Hi Capt. Mike! So nice to hear from you. Thanks so much for your kind comments. It keeps us motivated. We will let you know next time we are heading that way. Would love a night at Lyford Cay. Yes, we've been in Norman's Pond before. Really nice place with great holding and protection. We are afraid sometimes to go back there because you can get trapped in there for a while if the winds are strong easterlies for an extended period. Cheers my friend. We will see you out there.

Hi Guys, I assume no-one has ever told you how to use your anchor. The Anchor doesn't hold the boat, it holds the chain. As a rule of thumb, you are to let out three lengths of your boat in chain, into the sand, and this will hold your boat in almost any wind up to but not including Gale Force Winds. I hope this helps you out to have a lot more fun on your trip. Happy Sailing
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 года назад
Hi, we do appreciate the tips. I have been told and have done extensive research on proper anchoring techniques, and I have never heard of the 3 lengths of your boat technique. We mostly do at least 5 to 1 scope, which means from the top of the bow to the bottom, times 5. So if 15 feet from bow to bottom, we put out 75 feet of chain. We will do 7 to 1 or more, if the wind may blow, and if there is room to swing with other boats in the anchorage. The anchor in many respects does provide holding. When the current or wind gusts and you extend to the end of your ground tackle, it should hold if set correctly. If it's just the chain keeping you still why not just tie a rock to your chain. In a lot of places in the Bahamas you just can't throw out as much chain as you want to never pull tight on the anchor. There are small anchorages, current, and other boaters to contend with. Sometimes 3 to 1 scope is all you can do, so in that case, you better have an anchor with really good holding power, and has good resetting ability if the current or wind changes. Cheers!
@tucolsciencestuff7321
@tucolsciencestuff7321 3 года назад
@@SearchingforCShels There are different types of anchors available, if you are only on sand, then it is best to use a sand anchor. The method for setting the sand anchor is quite simple; Drop the anchor to the sea floor with a little bit of extra chain, (making sure the anchor is facing the right way up) then reverse the boat a little until you feel the anchor grab. Next you let out as much chain as possible until you reach 3 lengths of the boat. I understand the limitations involved when other boats are around, and all you can do is what you can do. Still, it is best to have the right equipment if things are tight in anchorages. I am an Australian and this is what we do on The Great Barrier Reef, because we also want to protect the Ocean Floor and Coral Reefs. We have a constant 6knot current around most of the reef and sometimes very heavy South Easterly Winds in the afternoons. The Sand Anchors work well in these conditions. I hope this helps. Cheers

That was a lot of fun - especially fishing with the sling - you have taken your editing to a new level. Seeing that you were always moving because of the wind, how high were the waves going to be if you remained anchored instead of heading in to the marina?
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 4 года назад
Thanks so much Bob! That area of south Highbourne has good wave protection from most directions, though if it blew directly west off the Exuma Sound we would get some sizeable swells coming in there. At that point though one would move to the west side of Highbourne.

We think Spring is the best time to visit. The winter winds have diminished and we don’t have the heat and hunderstorms of Summer. We use a handful of weather data to compare to each other. We like them all to align. For GFS and ECMWF model weather forecasts we use Windy. We also use Marv’s Weather when in the Bahamas and crossing. We also compare NOAA marine weather when crossing.

Great Video How is it covid wise? Are the procedures complicated? Thanks

Thanks Jean. Actually as mentioned at the beginning of the video, this content is from before the pandemic. We try to keep up to date on covid procedures on the Bahamas Land & Sea facebook page. Cheers!

If at about 20 knts your anchor fails, you have got the wrong anchor!
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 года назад
Agreed. The area didn’t have great anchorages for the wind direction that was coming. The anchorage is shallow sand over rock, so you can’t get a worthy set.

Maybe but what we find better is to do a swell bridle. Much easier than putting out multiple anchors, and you can keep your bow to the swell and waves.

In the Bahamas we do, except for a few areas, but we can plan around those. I (Shel) am a software consultant, and Cyndi is a remote Business Assistant.

Why don't you just move the solar panels to the flybridge top? I have a very similar boat, and previous owner installed panels in same spot, so i have same shading issues. Thinking I will move them.
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 3 года назад
The plan is in the near future is to put more solar on the flybridge top. So I would still need a solution for the panels on the aft hardtop. But yes, moving them would solve this for sure.

best people get info from ,happy see you back,,, what does it cost anchor off Bahamas ? do they limit amount time one can stay ? would you think it better to take boat right from Cape cod to Bahamas OR take down the inter waterways then head into Bahamas ??plan is buy 44 ft and do it myself
@SearchingforCShels
@SearchingforCShels 4 года назад
Aw thank you. It doesn't cost anything to anchor in most places in the Bahamas. Where you see us paying in the video is part of the Exuma Land and Sea Park, where they do charge .50 a foot for anchoring. I'd do the Intracostal waterway if you haven't done it before and you have the time. Some beautiful places to stop and see along the coast.

Do you have one you recommend? We have one of the top anchors you can buy. A Rocna Vulcan. A different anchor may have slipped and never dug back in, this one is designed to reset itself if it gets pulled out.

Another great video! We are total rookies and just bought a 30 foot cruiser and launched a channel cruising the waters of Ontario, Canada after being inspired by you guys. There are not a lot of power boat/trawler channels out there so we'd love to hear of any that you may know of. Plenty of learning curves when my crew consists of me and a 7 and 11 year old lol! We'd love any advice and feel free to check us out at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e08zJgwoZL8.html , we'd love the support as we try and figure this out. Cheers!
