Join 92NY's Spark Your Health for a soul-provoking discussion that will leave you feeling more in tune with yourself, and with a toolkit of ways to face everyday challenges without caving into stress.
We are living through multiple pandemics, including a mental health crisis of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and addiction, that cannot all be solved by medical professionals. How can we best approach this challenging era while supporting ourselves in being healthy and vibrant? Bestselling authors and thought leaders Gabor Maté, Dan Siegel, and Elissa Epel will come together to discuss new views of trauma, positive stress, overcoming difficult circumstances, and finding ourselves in an IntraConnected world. Learn how we can use these insights to fuel an awakening and evolution in human culture and consciousness, starting within ourselves.
The doctors will briefly summarize and discuss key tips from their new books, Dr. Maté’s The Myth of Normal, Dr. Siegel’s IntraConnected, and Dr. Epel’s The Stress Prescription and offer practical changes we can make in our everyday lives. Together, we can make a transformative pivot in how we live on this precious planet - through embracing positive stress, joy, connection, and living our purpose.
Thank you to our co-sponsor for this event, Compassionate Inquiry®. Compassionate Inquiry® is a psychotherapeutic approach created by Dr. Gabor Maté that reveals what lies beneath the appearance we present to the world. The practice of Compassionate Inquiry gently uncovers and releases the layers of childhood trauma, constriction and suppressed emotion embedded in the body, that are at the root of illness and addiction.
A graduate-level online year-long professional training in Compassionate Inquiry is available to health professionals, and a Self-Study Short Course has been designed for lay people. See www.compassionateinquiry.com for more information.

The reason I like Gabor (especially @51.20) more than Dan and thirdly Elissa is that he brings a level of empathy that is only really, possible for one who understands and has experienced trauma deeply without as much the unwitting or imperceptible cognitive overlays. He understands from a Polyvagal perspective (i.e., first hand, at an autonomic ventral vagal and dorsal vagal level, beneath the words) feeling, accessing and experiencing in the context of bodily-based registration of Interpersonal Safety (neuroception and interoception).

I used to be a paramedic and now I’m a nurse in er and icu. I also have seizure disorder and end up in icu as a patient fairly often. Like once to three times a year. It pisses me off so much how people treat those that call for bell Or come to hospital for help. It is literally disgusting to hear what these nurses… the ones who are supposed to be compassionate and caring, not only say… but actually act on. I say what you just said all the time. It seems like a home who has been a patient in a hospital, has been an addict, has been homeless, or anything like that stuff is always a ways better nurse or paramedic etc

Every time I listen to Dr. Gabor Mate, and this time specifically along with the other lead speakers of this session, I realise how fortunate I am to be born in India and raised in this culture and philosophy. What the initial part describes is pure vedanta and adwaita. It so reminds me of the great Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh's concept of inter-being. How he would say, we all are inter-are. It breaks my heart to see so many of us Indians not realise what we have and try to be as Western as possible in our lifestyle and follow the very things the speakers are lamenting about.

Love Love all of your wisdoms and generosity to share the vastly important topics❤ As an acupuncturist it is so lovely to hear the focus coming back to nature...back to basics and somatic principles, in addressing trauma, and the hope this will bring people. Looking at ancient wisdoms for more integrative health approaches. For me it is a daily focus not just to take a walk in nature but to connect to the birds that appear before me...inquiring about their gifts...their unique attributes...noticing the water in each season and what state it is in. Is it frozen and how I connect with this frozeness or the rush of the water in spring and how my life sometimes feels rushy or out of control. Our ability to intraconnect to nature.. gain the wisdom within ourselves... see the seasons and how they naturally transform us if we connect to them and allow the shifts to take place...and let go like the leaves in fall. There's nothing like moxabustion and acupuncture to quickly connect the person to their internal landscape. And the points (365+) all have names and wisdoms. My favorite is Returning Current. So grateful to see this for the Return or Great Turning that is coming.❤

I appreciate the scholarship represented in this conversation, AND I kept thinking there could be some acknowledgement of the very real threat that exists for marginalized groups in the USA. I think it's important to name both - otherwise we put a lot of the onus on the marginalized individual to overcome the man-made desperation (climate change included) created by the dominant group in our world.

Something so simple that my mother would tell me when I was feeling uncomfortable: “Just be yourself “. Finally this phrase makes sense, and has gotten me to a place of peace. Parents need to constantly reaffirm how proud they are of their children’s uniqueness. Give your child a sense of purpose in the family unit. Just small jobs that are important to all in the family. This sense of responsibility is so important to a lifetime that can add to any community you may be in. A spiritual identity is so valuable , and must be personal., never forced. A book I highly recommend is, “The Infinite Way” by Joel Goldsmith.

i have been listening to a Podcast call "Blind Boy". He is Irish and interviews many astute individuals, often people from Ireland who are involved in understanding the world, history and culture. He democratizes art, mental health and so many other things. One thing that came up about trauma is poverty. For this reason, I hope to see these conversations accessible to all. Poverty itself as trauma is something complex in this information era. We need to address this to heal. Thank you for your talk

So much knowledge here. Social connection is so important. Social media is lending to unreal thinking . One does not have to promote mental health one on one. At 72 yr young I have friends that state “ it’s how we are connected “ What happened there???? Social media also gave my ex hits of dopamine, new supply on a moment to moment basis. He actually had other mental health problems, however availability was at his finger tips. Thank you for your insight all.

Frozen emotion yes and I would say also the negative affirmation that is in our subconcsious, and that is really the trauma. Something on a subconcsious level telling you you are stupid, ...we just need to get clarity about that, to correct what is false.

A typical day in my life. My malignant narcissistic husband of twenty years bought a countertop convection oven, it clearly states that the first time you heat it up should be outdoors to burn off dangerous fumes. He agreed to this the day he came home with it, but several days later when he was about to use it I asked, have you heated it up outside yet? He says, “ no , I read that you don’t have to do that” , I said well my birds are very susceptible to airborne fumes and I’m not willing to risk their lives, so please just take it out to the garage and let it burn off first, “ no, you f’king do it then” , ok I said no problem, but before I can set down what I have in my hand he’s grabbing the cooker and saying I’ll just do it downstairs (which is not closed off from the upstairs) , so I say John, please , you told me to do it and I’m happy to, just please hand it to me, to which he calls me every foul name and throws the cooker down on the floor, damaging both the floor and the cooker. Every day I expect will be my last at the hands of this hateful alcoholic (I don’t drink), I’ve been sick almost the entire time I’ve been with him, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis of the bladder, swollen spinal cord, POTS, too many to name. When I was finally well enough to work and thought if I can just hold a job for a year or two I can save enough to get free of him, but then CoVid hit. Police have been called to our house, they always defend my husband, a 6’3” tall police officer told my then 10 year old daughter and her 8 year old cousin (who had called the police because my husband left them alone to go drinking while I was at work) my daughter mustered up all her courage to say , “ my dad drinks every day and comes home and picks a fight with us” and the PO said, “ he’s over 21, he can drink whenever he wants” There is no way out for MOST of us, the silent abused!

Stressed, trauma, etc as youth? Why is that? Maybe because we have a world of bullies out there, parents who clearly don't want to "parent" putting their children in front of computer screens and game playing with electronic, can't go outside to play, they might get stolen, killed or robbed..... on and on and on. I am one of those Mamas that REFUSED to have my children EVER put on a type of pill or medication, was not even considered an "option" They were enrolled in sports and athletics and activities that were purposeful and built self esteem. NOT LABELED and PILLED! I never had death nor suicide! They were taught right from wrong and not "enabled" Rather than looking at the youth you had better start with the parents and society as well as our legal system. I never new it was okay for step children to punch their parents in the face and still expect money to be supported..... let's talk about that legal system.

Child suicide is "under 18" in my situation there was "NO" child suicide when being raised and healthfully attached to the family unit; from birth to 18. I think being controlled, a whipping boy, slave driver, pilled to death, relentlessly told they are "worthless" after building three beautiful homes, holding a full time job, starting two businesses, being a husband, father and taking care of an in law all while being completely ripped from his biological family..... a cheating spouse running around while a man is working hard to provide what men do for their families ...... that might contribute to suicide. I don't know, what do you think? You think that is being dealt a fair hand in life..... you think that is the answer for positive so called "mental health" AGAIN....... assuming, assuming, assuming. Should we get on the subject of the program and what they do to people? YOU and YOUR FAMILY could be the next victim of "the program"
