Very good tutorial. I initially worked this out with full chords - makes so much sense to play the upper part of the chord and have the bass play cover the bass notes - way easier too and much cleaner in the mix. Thanks for doing this video.
The end of the chorus Ab - Ab/Bb I’m sure the guitar plays two different voicings. (From the “Bbm” triad that’s already vamping, move down to an Ab triad then up to the higher Ab voicing that you already play) I’m sure that’s what I hear Anyway. Love your videos man, saved me loads of time haha x
I know I'm probably a knucklehead But first you say that the basic chord is Eb minor 9.. but don't play the low E flat. In that case, wouldn't the next three notes be: Gb, Db, and F? But you say that the three notes should be Bb, Db, and F. I guess I'm confused because I understand that the base is covering the E flat but who's covering that Gflat if the guitar isn't playing it? Thanks.
Yeah it's kinda tricky from a strict theory perspective. Ebm9 would give you Eb Gb Bb Db F, but the harmony is really a Bb triad sitting on an Eb bass note. That gives you Eb Bb Db F. I just "simplify" it to Ebm9 because that's the overall tonal centre (Eb minor). Technically I should have said Bb/Eb 😀
I wouldn’t think so. This song is a synth, keyboard, based song, where flat keys are very common. The bass wouldn’t have a problem playing an Eb. If they needed the low note, they probably have a five string.
