The “Ribaldo” Milanese Arming Sword is LK Chen’s latest venture into the medieval European reproduction market, as a collaboration with Matt Easton, who provided accurate measurement parameters and handling characteristics of the original Oakeshott type XIX sword that was auctioned by Sotheby’s. After close examinations and extensive testing cutting and thrusting on historically accurate targets in this video, I can attest with confidence that this is one of the best reproduction medieval swords on the current sub-$800 market, in terms of faithfulness to the original, handling and fit and finish.
It captures all the unique traits of not only the type XIX-a relatively rare type among late medieval swords, with a high degree of attention to detail-from the 4 different cross sections on the blade, to the pronounced and complex distal tapering, the decorative detailing on the blade and the hilt furnitures. The result is a surprisingly lightweight sword for its impressive 36.5” blade (one of the longest among medieval single-handed swords) but quite authoritative at cutting yet still precise at thrusting. For a sword that weighs only 2 lbs and 1 oz it’s shockingly efficacious during test cutting, when paired with a buckler or rotella shield, or used by itself.
The fit and finish show a strong handmade feel because the sword is hand forged and handcrafted from start to finish. Yet the result is nonetheless on par with many premium reproduction swords priced above $1000. The blade is very symmetrical and flat with little rippling. The transitions among 4 cross sections are done with precision and care. The blade has accurate distal tapering not only resulting in a very lively and lightweight long blade, but also incredibly rigid in the first ⅔ of the blade but appropriately flexibly in the top ⅓ of the blade. The blade has refined edge bevels without any secondary bevel and shaving sharp edges.
The aperture of the crossguard is a rather tight-fit to the base of the blade. The hot peening is cleanly executed yet forms a desirable geometry. The leather wrapped wood-core grip with twin risers and cord impression is thoughtfully done considering it’s a first for LK Chen to make an European style grip, with the right amount of tapering and overall circumference. The choice of leather for the grip and scabbard wrapping is an unusual one, yet still of premium grade and feels very comfortable. The scabbard is sturdy yet lightweight and slim to fit the blade with good retention while still easy to draw. The oxblood color has a nice contrast to the brass chape.
I compared it to its close relative the Irish ring-pommel swords with almost identical blades in terms of handling and context of usage, and even a premium reproduction type XIX sword--the Lockwood Gallowglass Ring-pommel Longsword. While the Lockwood is an excellent reproduction, LK Chen does an equally great job with only a quarter of its price.
Please watch my review for detailed showcase and historical analysis. It’s not a short video, but I implore you to consume it in its entirety to see me make the case in each aspect that this is one of the best reproduction models in recent years.

Definitely. The blade is quite sophisticated with 4 cross sections and the decorative filework. The hilt is a little plain other than the finger ring. The original is like that, has a very stern feeling akin to some earlier medieval hilt furniture. One can definitely etch, engrave or even do some copper inlay on that pommel. It has a continuous surface even though it’s slightly domed. Good canvass for some decor.

Great review like usual. I wonder why LK Chen decided on producing this sword as their first European sword. There seem to be so many other swords they could have selected instead that are not on the reproduction market. Depeeka also offers this sword. I know Depeeka doesn't have the best reputation but the Depeeka sword has received pretty good reviews and is only around $175 on Kult of Athena. I really struggle with the pommel on both swords....aesthetically speaking, it is so plain and boring in my opinion. It might be historically accurate but I wonder if people are going to buy historically accurate swords that are unattractive. The saving grace is that the sword is sharp and performs well. Which leads me to Matt Eastons swords...its a shame he didnt work with Lk Chen instead of Windlass!
@FortuneFavoursTheBold
@FortuneFavoursTheBold Год назад
I think LK Chen happened to be able to collaborate with Matt Easton on this one and he supplied this one to them as he thinks that this is a rather complex sword to make. Like I demonstrated, the blade has four different cross sections, on top of that, there's a concave distal taper built in, which makes it more difficult to execute properly. And LK Chen absolutely nails it. I can't commentate on their collaboration process on Matt's behave, but the result turns out fantastic regardless. The pommel is actually not a boring type. I used to be not a fan of wheel pommels in general, particularly the types without much central hub geometries going on. But I've changed my opinion on that matter over time. There's a HUGE variety of wheel pommels and that changes the associated usage so dramatically that you might see them as different pommel types altogether. The pommel on this one and the original has a subtle taper going on. It's rather thin for a purpose. It's easy to get around, and comfortable to hold onto, whether you use a saber grip or hammer grip, or finger the guard. There's no awkwardness no matter what associated with this pommel. It is deliberately light, so the entire sword is kept lightweight--it weighs 2 lbs with a 37" blade for crying out loud. But it also keeps the point of balance away from the hilt so while it's still nimble, the cuts can carry significant authority. It's completely relevant to the type of troops that would carry this kind of sword back then. Deepeeka's reproduction misses the mark big time. Sure, it's cheap and I don't want to understate the usefulness of affordability but while you are replicating a certain sword, you have to capture its unique traits, otherwise why would you bother? Just make a generic sword and there would be absolutely nothing wrong with it. The original at Royal Armouries has a crazily prominent hexagonal cross section (collections.royalarmouries.org/object/rac-object-121), that is entirely missing on the one Deepeeka makes. One of the defining feature is simply not present on their product, so why even bother with a type XIX and an original to begin with? The grooves on the ricasso are also completely wrong. It doesn't have the correct distal taper for that original, or for type XIX in general, either. So the way it handles is once again wrong. What you take away from handling a sword like that is simply pretty far away from what the original sword actually feels like. Now we are not even mentioning the lack of edge on Deepeeka's while LK Chen's has super refined edge geometry AND apex'ing. I mean you saw the cutting in my video, it literally cuts like a dream, and thrust pretty well for a cutting-oriented sword. Now I actually have no problem with Deepeeka even though they miss the mark on this, as it's budget brand and they mostly aim at the reenactment market, and even so they are improving in recent years, I commend their efforts for something they sell for $150 or so. I wish Matt Easton could collaborate with LK Chen more, too. Let's keep our fingers crossed. I'm sure he knows the best as a lot of collaborations actually come down to the ease of communication, something that customers like us don't care about. We only see the final results. But people who collaborate on a project also value the smoothness of the processes as well. If it was a happy union, I'm sure they would work together more in the future.

It warms my heart an Irish longsword made an appearance in this video! Would you compare the Lockwood version to the Albion Gallowglass when you review that sword?
@FortuneFavoursTheBold
@FortuneFavoursTheBold Год назад
Yeah, I will definitely review the Lockwood Irish sword in due course. I expect it to cut really well given its superior sharpness out-of-the-box and how properly stiff and forward balanced it is. Not a big thruster against soft material as well! I cannot personally compare it to the Albion Gallowglass as I didn't get the chance to pick one up before the limited edition was discontinued, but I will quote this sword's original owner's words to compare it to the Albion. He owned both swords at one point.

Great to hear. Just be prepared that it handles in ways you might not expect it to be, but given the context, it is perfect for a very long-bladed arming sword. Even though it might weigh the same as the Kingston Arms Atrim type XIV and XVIII, the weight is distributed in totally different ways. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you get used to it, it moves quite well!

Don't forget that many Italian infantrymen who didn't have *full* plate harness and only appeared to have textile armor in the artworks were actually wearing coats-of-plate or brigandine armor composed of small plates under a textile layer. Of course, these did not cover arms, legs, necks, etc., and so the wearer would still be more vulnerable to cuts than those in full plate. Yet, they were far better off than merely wearing "textile armor" as you said.

Is the ornamentation on the ricasso painted on or etched/engraved? I really want this but this is a major concern for me.
@FortuneFavoursTheBold
@FortuneFavoursTheBold Год назад
Not etched. Deeply engraved into the blade, and then blackened. Just like the original piece! If you want an accurate type XIX sword, this is a no-brainer. Just be aware that it's balanced away from the hilt, even though this is a lightweight sword, just like what I said in the review.

@@FortuneFavoursTheBold one other question, is it comfortable to cut with your finger in the ring? That’s how I used my machiavelli and it gave me much more accuracy. @FortuneFavoursTheBold

Handling wise fingering the guard will give you a bit more control but like I speculated the cross on this one isn’t particularly rounded also the edges can make fingering the guard uncomfortable unless you wear gloves or sand the edges down a little bit.

Are you familiar with any other midrange swords that are faithfull reproductions of original pieces? Apart from this one and the Windlass Royal Armouries line
@FortuneFavoursTheBold
@FortuneFavoursTheBold Год назад
These two so far are the best, unless you can find a smith to do custom commission for the mid-range price ($400-$800), which is possible but rare. Purna Darnal is one of them, as I reviewed about 6 or 7 of them now. But now the commissioning price for custom pieces has risen quite a bit unless it's a smaller or less complex piece. For production companies, the LK Chen and RAC so far produce the most faithful replications. Peter Regenyei is great but he doesn't really offer close replicas and his style is more modern. Del Tin at times CAN be good, but most of the time they are less historical than these two. DSA occasionally can output alright swords, but their quality control is all over the map. One guy can get a perfectly fine sword (with some questionable design decisions usually), the next guy can get something almost unrecognizable. It all depends on the contractor they use at the time.

Would you take this sword over the albion squire line models?
@FortuneFavoursTheBold
@FortuneFavoursTheBold Год назад
They are of different types, but if we are just talking about building quality and value proposition, yes. This one is made sharp, wouldn't have to be sharpened to have a secondary bevel, it comes with a good scabbard, it has complex cross sections, whereas the Albion SL models are of simpler designs from the earlier medieval times. But if you want a type X or type XII, those are what Albion SL offers and do well. You still have to sharpen them, and have a scabbard made. So all in all, you are looking at potentially double the price of this LK Chen model.
