I have always said that Starling is one of the most underrated Welterweights in history. I remember watching this fight at home with about half my building in my living room. This was a huge event. Lol. Thank you for uploading.
@@Von.NorthEndYeah Magic man Moochie had some very WEIRD luck and not in a good way. The Curry fights could have gone differently, if one of the judges had admired tight defense it could've easily went his way. Also, he had terrible luck!! They did that thing when he fought Bumphus where they let you hear each judge's score for the last round every round. Even though the judges were scoring it for Bumphus, Marlon was BUSTING Johnny up, and it probably would've ended up a TKO for Marlon, but instead Duva knew Bumphus was ahead, and took advantage of a cut from accidental Headbutt and said his fighter couldn't continue WTF!?!? He lost technical decision. I hated that. Blocker also beat him when he was really winning seems like.
I remember this fight well. I loved Lloyd Honeyghan and I really hoped he would win this fight, as it was one he always said he wanted. He always said that he hated Starling and desperately wanted to fight him. He started aggressively, but Starling blocked and slipped most of his punches and countered superbly. Then Lloyd tried jabbing and moving, but Starling hunted him down. Nothing Lloyd tried worked. He got more frustrated as the fight went on and when you get frustrated, you become desperate, when you become desperate you become predictable, and Starling took full advantage of that. Whatever Honeyghan tried, Starling had an answer for and congratulations to him for a brilliant performance.
I love this fight. So, so much. Absolute masterclass from Starling, who clearly anticipated that Honeyghan would try and completely overwhelm him the way he did Donald Curry.
@@davidkirkwood9537 He was and it really annoyed Starling that he was,i have a ko mag with an interview with him and he keeps saying things like "How come you never had me on the cover of your issue" and why they under rate him,it keeps saying "Marlon becoming testy" and then "becoming testy again". But he had a point. His defence was superb and In this bout It was clear that Honeyghan was putting too much into the early rounds, his corner should have told him to conserve his energy and that is defence was too good to overwhelm him like that.
The magic man appears again they written him off he got cheap shoted after the bell they could have gave him a break on that protect your self at all times and dud got clobbered after the bell after fighting a prime time Curry twice he was seasoned and ready to get Honey
Starling really fought a great fight here. He always had that great defense, and slipped so many shots going from side to side. He did all the things that Curry didn’t do vs Honeyghan.
Marlon managed a gas station in my town back in the late 70's . He went pro and his record belied the Marlon we knew . The mild mannered Marlon just kept winning .
Two great late 80's welterweights. Starling a great defensive fighter, honeyghan, are great offensive fighter. I felt that honeyghan had burnt out at this point. His nightlife lifestyle catching up with him.
I was flabbergasted st Starling's powerful, counter punching abilities in this bout and then totally dumbfounded at Mark Breland blowing Lloyd away in less than 3 rounds in perhaps his next fight.
I was there. It was in a big tent behind Caesars Palace, I was in the Air force at Nellis AFB. They gave tickets to the base. You could get a free $50 or a free $500 ticket. I got the $50 my friend got the $500 one. We found seats in the $500 section.. Right behind the VIP section. Hearns was right in front of us. Mike's analysis is spot on .
When I saw this fight in 1988, Starling became one of my favourite fighters, mainly because of his superb defensive and incisive counter-punching skills. Pure masterclass, and still to this day, one of the most adept counter punchers I’ve ever seen.
Curry's great accomplishment was beating this man Starling twice. Starling was one hell of a fighter who beat several good fighters. Only lost to Michael Nunn because of the size difference.
Was gutted when honeyghan lost this fight ! He wobbled starling early and was just trying to overpower him ! Starling defence was to good and won well in the end ! Hear he’s not very well now days ! Bless him
This fight illustrates how one bad beating can ruin a fighter. Lloyd Honeyghan entered the ring as a cocky world champion who thought that he was going to knock Marlon Starling out. He left it badly beaten and a shadow of his former self. He was never the same fighter after this and the subsequent beating at the hands of Mark Breland, merely served to confirm that his days as a world-class fighter were over.
Yes. Just rewatched the Breland fight and Honeyghan was a shadow of his former self. None of the brash arrogance and put down by two jabs. Completely shot.
Yes. Honeyghan was destroyed psychologically as well as physically. Bit by bit, his self belief and confidence were eroded. Whatever he tried, Starling had an answer to. Even the knockdown, he didn't really get hit. He was just broken by then.
Starling a two time WBA and WBC welterweight champion. Just imagine how far his career could have gone if the great Eddie Futch would have trained him his whole career. WOW!!!
Who can Remember the great fights of yester year, i remember all of them. Frank Bruno, Mike Tyson, prince naseem, lloyd honyghan, Nigel Ben, chris eubank etc not forgetting LENNOX LEWIS
Eddie futch a lovely articulate man and superb tactician. I suppose this fight must of gone some way to make up for the michael spinks disappointment a year earlier.
Slick, tough, and endlessly energetic. Marlon Starling would use his high guard and timing to make up for his (relative) deficits in speed and power, forcing his opponents to work harder than they'd like, landing far fewer shots than they wanted. When they started to slow down, he'd get more aggressive, putting punches together on a now fatigued fighter. An opponent would need exceptional will and durability to survive the later rounds, only to lose unanimously on the scorecards. A cerebral style crafted by the great Eddie Futch, and bestowed on the clinical Magic Man.
This was essentially a career ended for Honeyghan. He was absolutely never the same after this beat down. Starling fought a near perfect fight and Honeyghan really looked amateurish. His career really went down after this fight.
Nah the Vaca fight even though he won the rematch and the Mark Breland fight before this one knackered Honeyghan.Lucky for Starling that he beat Honeyghan who was on the slide.
Lyoyd Honeyghan got lucky against Curry. If Curry found him at a higher weight, what Starling did to Honeyghan here, Curry would`ve finished him within three rounds. Curry toyed with Starling.
Lloyd Was another uk hype job he could fight but lost to any other big name the curry fight did worse for him soon as in with the other big boys he lost way overhyped.Agree starling was underrated and Mike mc Callum and arron prior they all were.
Honeyghan, clearly fought the wrong fight, all that uncontrolled aggression in the first couple of rounds were clearly unnecessary, then he decided to run for cover from the 5th round onwards, hoping Sterling would tire. Sterling fought the perfect fight.
Terrible tactics from honeyghan....he had the talent to give starling a boxing lesson infact he did it in a lot of his fights....swingin bombs instead of using his jab and movement....so frustrating when I see fighters not using their boxing ability....Hatton was another fighter like that who could have performed much better
Claire Lilley yup and he got the lions share of it. Made good more than Starling did that night apparently. Starling got what he really wanted though a win over the Raggamuffin man.🥊
@@petej5232 British fighters have always earned more than US fighters. When Tim Witherspoon beat Frank Bruno to retain his HW title back in the 1980s, he later learned that Bruno had earned 25% more than him despite being the challenger. This was always down to the difference in promoters in the UK and US but these days a British fighter can sell out a 90K stadium so the likes of AJ has earned substantially more than Deontay Wilder. Mayweather made his money from PPVs but he is the exception to the rule.
I'm glad Honey got beat up and this brutal London cat got beat up and put back way in his arrogant place cause he beat my man Curry the cobra cause he was weight drained and underestimated when it came to the English man!
