@@SilverBullet22250Agree. I use 53.5 grns. of 4350 with a 180 grn Spitzer bullet getting 2650 fps for precision shooting out of my M70 Winchester that is 50 years old. I can reload hotter loads for better down range performance but I don’t get quite as tight of group. My old Hornady manual doesn’t give recipes for 3100 fps. ??

Well Randy sir, I must ask about the speer "GOLD DOT bullet?? I have yet tobuse the gold dot, but I hear a lot of people/reloaders say it's a tried and true bullet that opens consistently. on whitetail deer size game. I ask because I know you will be brutally honest. Thanks and with much respect.
All of the Gold Dot line of bullets are bonded having the jacket electroplated onto the lead core. I use bonded bullets and haven't seen one fail yet so I'd say your safe with your choice. A little off topic but deals with testing Gold Dot bullets. Years back I carried a 38 Spl with 125 grain Gold Dot +P+ ammo. I did some wet newsprint paper testing and the results gave me more confidence in the Gold Dots as street rounds on the job. Thank God I never had to pull the trigger on another person.
Mr. Selby the 06 was my 1st big bore, I fired, at 11 yrs old. Nealing position, Dad loaded them hot. After the shot at a gl jug of water, I was laying flat on my back with the gun straight up. Dad thought it was funny, I guess it was. The rifle was his rifle from Korea. I fell in love that day with shooting and reloading. That was 1965. G.

I’ve been loading shot shells 12 gauge mostly for years. Now I’ve been getting into pistol and rifle loading. I’ve been researching, learning, buying equipment, and supplies for two years to start loading metallic ammo. We own several nice 30.06 rifles in my family. I’ll definitely take your advise when I start working up loads for those rifles. I’ve already taken your advise on your other videos and you saved me some needless waste of effort and time. Not many guys out there that can sit down in front of a wood heater and shorten the learning curve for us younger old guys. It reminds of of growing up and walking to the store where the old men use to talk around the wood heater. I use to sip on an RC cola and soak up the wisdom. Had some good times with those guys. Old school is the best school. 👍

Ok, my test shot worked. I am a little younger than Randy, and respect my elders. This man has gobs of experience and is willing to share it....why not listen a little? I would rather by far listen to Randy than the younger hunters and shooters all over the internet. We learned by experience prior to all the digital nonsense Keep going Randy.
With regards to energy on game, I go about it a little different than Randy, but we end up at the same place. I want 100 ft/lb of energy AT THE ANIMAL for every inch of penetration I desire. Coincidentally, this leaves me at the 1800 ft/lb for a bull elk. (18" of penetration). I've had good luck with Speer Grand Slam & Hawk bullets, but to be fair, I generally never shoot over 300 yards. Nosler, Swift, & Barnes TTX all work, as does North Fork. I stay away from Hornady & Sierra, and the old style (non-tipped) Barnes as I've seen them fail. Just personal experience of myself & those I know who've used them. Randy's comments on military cartridges ( & military rifles) transitioning to hunting rounds is spot on. Most guys use what they know/like, hence, AR's in the field. Check out 'Frontline Rejects' channel, he does some good testing.
I bought a 30-06 with the intention of re-barreling it to make a 308 win long action.....then I realized I could get more performance just keeping it a 30-06....my standard load is now a 225 eldm at 2650fps out of it's 22" barrel...it flys like a 6.5 creedmoor...I also worked up a 130 ttsx Barnes load....3400fps... smoking fast.
Randy, I have seen the changes you speak of in the 30-06 ammunition over the years. I had a Browning A Bolt gifted to me in 1987. Over the years I've taken 50 plus whitetails and a few elk amd mule deer with that rifle and it is my go to when I want a light reliable rifle for just about any big game in the lower 48. I have been over the last few years exploring different reloaded ammunition and have settled on the 180 gr nosler partition leaving the barrel near 2800 fps with groups under an inch consistently. I limit my shots to 300 yrds because my vision has been getting worse over the last 10 years. Plenty of rifle for me. Thanks for your input and wisdom.

Tagged deer just last week. All dropped out to 260 yards. Velocity unimpressive but guess that didn't matter
Yup: After 50 years of playing with rifles I went back to 30-06. My two 5.5 pound Forbes 24b's shoot sub-moa with 150-168 bullets at 3070-2950fps. Darn good with just a little reloading effort. Closer to 300 Mag Light than to a 308, that's for sure.
I use mine, an off the shelf remington 700 "American wilderness rifle", for elk++. I get right around a 2inch group in ideal conditions out to 300 yards with the 180gr Nosler partition. RL-17. Sig brass. Federal 210M primer. 2775fps. Very very consistent and recoil that allows for reasonably enjoyable practice! For anything 500 yards and under, I trust it. Beyond that....she starts really losing the battle with gravity in a hurry.
Long ago, when I built my M1903 Springfield service rifle, I asked an internet gun group for advice on an accuracy load with 180 grain bullets. The answer I got back was a full case of H4831 to the bottom of the bullet, about 58.0 grains. Velocity in my rifle is about 2650 or so, as I recall. I never could do better accuracy wise but settled on IMO 4064 in the long run to fit multiple rifles.
When I got out of the Army after Desert Storm , I bought my first brand new rifle , it was a Savage model 110 in .30-06 . I used what ammo was available which happened to be Remington 180 grain Core Lokt . After a few years I switched to Federal 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips ( just hunting whitetails in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) I shot a lot of deer over the years with that rifle , and then got caught up in the magnum craze for a while ( .300 WM / .300 WSM and 7mm REM Mag ) then went to a few 308 Winchester rifles , had a .270 , back up to a .280 Remington and then to a 7mm-08 Remington. I’ve sold every one of those rifles except for my 7mm-08 which I absolutely love … but I found myself feeling a little under gunned at times knowing that there are some very large black bears in the cedar swamps where I hunt and I’ve recently just picked up a brand new Winchester model 70 Featherweight in .30-06 . Right back to where I started , and I’m so happy to have the venerable old .30-06 back in my life again. I agree that the 165/168 grain pills are the sweet spot for this cartridge. And as you stated, with today’s premium bullets and powders , this cartridge can stay on the heels of the .300WM and handle ANY chore I need it to do. I’m glad I found this video and I want to get involved in reloading for this rifle because I want get it up to its true potential. Nothing crazy just get some loads that can produce admirable results better than factory loads . Some 165 grain Swift Scirocco II / Nosler Partitions / Accubond and 168 grain Berger VLD Hunting and I think that will take care of business . I’ll save the lighter 150 grain stuff for the 7mm-08 .
Finished working up a load today, Kimber mountain ascent 30-06 with 24” barrel. RL17. Nosler accubond LR 190s at 2938 with lapua brass. I think once the barrel settles it will gain. Right after load test I did some fire forming and my barrel sped up another 50 fps so might have to redo the load test. But a 30-06 with 1500lbs of energy past 700 yards is nuts. 600 yards is my max.
A little surprised H4350 isn't on his short list of all-time great 30-06 powders, but the man knows his stuff. But I hunt Alaska in temps from -25F to 50 deg F, and H4350 is about the most temp-stable powder I've ever used. FWIW, I long ago switched from 180 partitions as my do-all to 168TTSX. From sitka blacktail to moose, my gun likes them at 2925fps avg for accuracy (SD of only 18 FPS) and for anything within 400 yards, they flat work.
I'm working up loads with the same combination. Barnes data has a max of 55.5grains of H4350 with an fps of 2825 out of a 24" barrel. I got 2775fps with that charge weight in my Tikka. What charge weight of H4350 are you using to get up to 2925fps?
@@KurtisBaus I hesitate to post it - but I worked it up in my Tikka T3 SS Lite (not a T3X). I use a single lot of brass, weighed and sorted, and found best results with Remington 9-1/2 primers. I did a ladder test and went a bit above the max data listed on Barnes' site, and found a great node at ~2925fps before I saw significant pressure signs. It's compressed of course, but I set on a vibratory table after charging and that settles the powder a good bit farther down the neck before bullet seating, with very little increased resistance to seating bullet to depth. COAL is SAAMI spec max at 3.240". I can load up to a 3.350" in my gun with these bullets, but the seem to like to jump quite a bit. I was getting more flyers the closer I got to the lands. YMMV, good luck.
Theres always a 3006 in my safe, not sure why or who could bash this old standby... With all the bullet selection and powder selections of today, its the most versatile cartridge and there is usually plenty of brass around..
He just personally believes in having a reasonable margin of error for elk, everything in his software revolves around elk. I also think he favors velocity, stout bullets and penetration more than payload, and the 06 definitely is at its best with soft low drag bullets while the mags can give you the whole package. Again, everything cones back to elk for him.

Due to my wife buying me the 30-06 rifle years ago for a Christmas present. I decided to use it this year. I’ve hunted with a 7mm REM Mag most of my life . But , I can say this I’m a believer in the 30-06 after my deer hunt this year . I ran the 30-06 Springfield 165 gr SST® Superformance®
There’s always a 30-06 in my gun safe because of versatility. My wife loves her ‘06 and her deer never run far, if they run at all! Another great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience!
I hand load for most of my rifles. Off the shelf ammo are lawyer loads. I took my 3 in groups to sub MOA 7mm Rem Mag. I prefer my 30-06 AI over my standard 30-06. Same for my custom rifle in 280 AI. I did this before I ever saw any of Randy's videos. This is akin to bedding actions in stocks from the store. 3 in groups is all the factory makers cared about 30+ years ago. With today's sub MOA guarantee, that has changed. You still have to tune it with different ammunitions, but I decided to go the hand loading route, and I find it very enjoyable. Folks today forget how little commercial ammo was actually available in the 50s and 60s.
Great stuff, Randy. Long ago I decided that the 165-grain Partition in my .30-06 would do everything I needed within it's limits. I never loaded H-414 or W-760 because I found H-4350 to be very temp stable. My Winchester Composite FWT is very accurate and safe with my load @ right around 2950 fps. You won't find it in any load manual, but the micrometer tells all. In the "old days" the factories used to publish the 150-grainer's velocity as 2970 fps. Kudos.
I’m using H 4350 for .270 win. I’m just working up my loads for my rifle now. I got some H 4350 because I plan on working up loads for 30.06 and 7mm rem mag also. If you know the best load data books for that realm of load data? Let me know. The sources I use now are slim on data using my particular components. But I did find one good published load to start with. I’m using 140grain Hornady SP BT to start off with in my 270 win
Stopped using 414 because of pressure problems in extreme heat or 🥶. I've definitely pushed 338 win mag to velocities over what the manuals say without pressure signs but i would advise caution as each rifle and powder lot is different.
Also, I really appreciate the fact that you push the idea of “ft lbs of energy”. Ethically, the folks that insist on being “snipers” and do not understand residual energy absolutely frustrate me.
I’m currently running 208gr bullets 2811fps from a 26” barrel in a factory Remington 700 long range in Lapua Brass with H4350 and couldn’t be happier with how it’s performed so far, my extreme spread was 1.1fps over 5 shots and it produced several 3-4” groups at 1000 yards. Not bad for something that came out 6 years before the titanic sank and 3 years before construction started!
I have always loaded up my 30-06 to full potential. That being said my 180gr Hammer Hunter projectiles with Reloder 17 are around 2950fps with a .250” group at 100yds.
Hodgdon superformance powder will push bullets very well in the 30-06. Ive gotten very close to 2900 with 180s on in a 22 inch barrel. I too have had good luck with remington 30-06 brass.
That's a max charge and it's not kind on rifles. It's best in my opinion to load it to bout 2850 2900 fps w a 150 _168 grain is ware it shines accuracy wise

Good advice Randy, I have gone the other way and found that Varget will drive a 125gr Nosler at 3425 fps. It’s horses for courses as I’m in Australia and unlikely to encounter large or dangerous game. That bullet has a nice tapered jacket and with a .366 BC shoots nice and flat out to 400 yds which is as far as I care to shoot at game. Best wishes to you and your family, cheers Adam.
Swift scirocco. A real hunting bullet. I’ve used a 150gr scirocco over 3300fps in my 7STW. Always an exit wound and huge blood trail if needed. Close or longer ranges over 300yds. Great hunting bullet.
I just go down to Walmart and buy Federal Blue box 150 grain for my 30-06, keep my shots at 300 yards or in (most under 100 yards) and stack deer and elk like logs😉
With my single shot Blaser K77 I get a little bit more powder space, since I am not so limited by magazine length. With 150 gr Speer Grand Slam and 150 gr Barnes TTSX driven by RL 15, I reach speeds of 3100 fps with no signs of high pressure. I could probably go even a bit faster but groups are under 1/2 MOA and performance on game is excellent. Also most of my game is taken within 100 yards and I do not take shots at animals past 300 yards. Ethical hunters get close, before making the kill. My long range shooting with cheap cup and core bullets is limited to paper targets.
The 30-06 is not a long range cartridge as it lacks energy at a distance, but within its limitations, a good cartridge, as so many have found over all of the years around the world. Thanks for watching.

@@chrisp308I agree! While I admire people who can hit a target at 1000 yds. or more, I am not at all impressed by someone who attempts the same shot on an animal, but that is just me, my closest elk shot was 10 yds. and my furthest about 350. I prefer to get closer.
I just finished a 30-06 rifle build its a savage model 110 left hand and I sighted it in with a Hornady 155gr bthp that has a charge set at 56grs of h4350 and velocity of 2800fps. this load will drive tacks at 200yards and has the potential for more but that is all my range has to offer for distance! I have shot a 110gr varmint bullet out to 1000yards but the bullet profile will not allow for deep penetration at that distance ,(weight retention and profile play major factors as to how bullets perform overall with the stability of barrel twist !
Thanks for the information sir I inherited my pop's 1941 army Springfield 30-06 he bought it in 1944 after he came home from sipan he told me he bought it for &25.00 I have never shot it.
The 30-06 loading a 210 grain nosler ABLR bullet with a 0.661 bc And a 24-26 inch barrel with modern powders can get 2700+ fps muzzle velocity has well over 1800 ft lbs of energy at 600 yds! At 2000+ ft of hunting elevation . most elk hunters hunt at much higher elevations than that therefor increasing its energy .this 210ABLR high bc BONDED bullet is the holy grail in the 30-06 for longer distances as it is designed to expand down to 1300 fps. At 600 yds this bullet is still traveling at nearly 2000 fps or more depending on your hunting elevation . This bullet makes the 30-06 a legitimate 600 yd CONTENDER elk rifle if properly loaded with modern powders . The 210 grain nosler accubond long ramge bullet is also designed for and is stable in 1:10 twist rate30-06 rifles. It performs flawlessly at the lower muzzle velocities which the 30-06 pushes them.minimal meat damage on game at both short amd longer distances due to those lower velocities . And reyains it's energy and velocity downrange . Also Anyone that thinks the 210 grain ablr ismt stable in a 1:10 twist barrel needs to give nosler a call and find out the facts.my rifle groups these high bc bullets at under an inch at 100 yds .they are awesome. And take the old warthorse to another level .
If an person is really smart you stick to the highly successful estsblished cartridges for logistics and economy. I call them the big 4 as in their number, and thats 6.5creed, 270win, 308win, 30-06. Those are the top of the heap for commercial success and theyll be easiest to source case components for. 30-06 is the big dog of those four and its still excellent and valid in this era. It would be crazy not to own a 30-06.
Again Randy thank you for such timely and hard to get info. Back 50 years ago when I was still in my teens I started loading WW760 powder in my 06 loads using 165gr Sierra bullets. Actually kind of easy to figure out just looking at the manuals. 760 gave top velocity with good load density. Using that load in my 1903 SPFD 06 worked wonders on mule deer and whitetails with never a failure of that Sierra bullet to put game down. Years ago I won a Winchester MOD 70 Classic in 30-06 at a RMEF dinner. The 06 is a hammer and found that H4350 gave excellent performance in the 06 with the 165 and 180 grain bullets. The H4350 pushed a Sierra 180 to 2825 fps MV and that was a great elk load out to at least 400 yards. The 06 is a hammer and to move up in c cartridge you need something with a belt and or over bored. Since belts are a silly affectation and over bore cartridges not needed for N America ungulates, I hink the 06 is pretty darn handy to have.
The usually untapped capability of .30-06 is available to handloaders. Numbers like that are why magnums are far less "needed" for those that wish to use the old .30-06 to its potential.
I've loaded my 3006 using Lapua cases, CCI-200 primers, 54gr H4350 powder and 165gr Hornady SST. Using the ladder method, I was able to achieve a muzzle velocity of 3580 fps without any pressure signs. My 3006 has a Mauzer action, old-fashioned wooden stock and 30" Broughton barrel. Although I consider muzzle velocities greater than 3000 fps impressive for a 30-06, it can also be a barrel burner. My advice is to keep the muzzle velocity below 3000 fps.

Lol you had me at MAUSER ACTION i love mine chambered in 30-06 with a 26" Douglas #4 barrel and Remington core lock tipped ammo 165gr 2940fps and it's lights out at 400 yards and I've pushed it out to 850 and hit 18" steel target 5 shots....i can't wait to start reloading for it. Also the recoil isn't anything like a 300 mag my young boys actually like it better than their 30-30 model 94.
With a good, strong action on a 24 inch barrel, the 150 grain bullets can reach 2,900 or even 3,000 fps. MV I've never needed to "push" my hand loads that far, but it is possible. Factory 180 grain bullets are advertised to go at 2,700 fps. And we have all taken plenty of Elk with these Factory loads.
I might do what you are doing to get the safe max load and then I would drop it back a grain. I have no idea what a very hot day might do to pressure increases and I always want a little margin of safety. You did not give your location, but I am in florida. Still a lot of very good information. Using an accurate micrometer on the case heads sounds like a very good idea no matter what one is loading. Selection of the base case is very important as I found out back in the '60s when I learn to reload that military cases used with some less than listed max loads would end up with loose primer pockets.
@@TG-vg3qe Thank you and a very good place to live. I once did live in place called meteetse, WYO for a few months. ranges in Wyoming are generally a lot further then what I have in the deep south unless there is a very large clear area like a farmers field.

I have always shot 414 and 150-165 bullets in my 06's pretty easy to land there once you try it. 414 is getting harder to find since its not being made. Got lots of 760 if I ever run out though
So, over your hunting career, what is your average distance, closest and farthest distance shots you’ve taken on elk? Seems, by the magnum’s you created, your shots are at longer ranges.
I use a rifle to get the job done with a heavy bullet in 7mm- 175 gr; .308- 180-200 gr; 350-400 yards, but equipped to go 600 or a bit further, one shot. Thanks for watching.

I share your dilemma, and I've been contemplating the same choice between. 308 and .30-06 for years. I have both and like them both. So here's what I've come up with. I live in New Hampshire and finding a place to shoot over 200 yards is difficult. Shooting a deer at over a hundred yards is rare here. So .308 is more than enough for hunting my neck of the woods. So the practical differences between the two cartridges is almost irrelevant. Recoil aside, the only practical advantage the '06 has is the ability to shoot 220 grain round nose bullets better than the .308. The 220 is a good woods bullet for under 200 yards. I've had great success with it for years. I can find 180s for the 308 and probably do just as well and never see a difference on deer. If you live out west where people routinely shoot longer distances in open country, you might be better served with an '06 or the .280 ai you mentioned. But unless you practice at the maximum range of those rounds, if you live out west you probably do, you'll also probably never "need" more than the 308. I'm getting older and looking to thin out the safe so I've spent a lot of time agonizing over this decision. Who really wants to choose a rifle to let go? Realistically my .44 carbine and muzzleloader will handle any of my hunting chores going forward. And realistically I'll probably keep them all. So buy and enjoy whatever you get the itch for. @@travissmith-wz5nc Barnes recommends 3.240, but I would load 55 grains at 35 thou, 50 thou, 65 thou, 80 thou, and 100 thou off the lands. If one stands out better than the rest, test powder loads up to 56ish at that jump(unless the 55 grains gives you what you are looking for). You will almost certainly find a load running over 3000 fps that shoots under 1 MOA. The last 30 06 I worked a load up for was a 1980s Model 700 that supposedly didn't shoot well. Three of those jumps went under an inch at 55 grains...35, 50, 65 thousandths. I would add...make sure you keep enough bullet in contact with the case neck when stretching the lengths out.
Hi Randy, You are the real deal. I love your videos. Do you not like the 30-06 because of the length/ dia ratio? If yes, what do you think is an ideal length/ dia ratio for a cartridge? ? Are YOUR cartridges ackley improved? if no why not?
The 30-06 doesn't adequately do what I need for my hunting and the ranges. Lacks the energy I look for. I shoot may rifles and chamberings, and I want top accuracy, velocity and energy, the 3-06 fails in last two. Thanks for watching.
I hope that there is someone that you can pass all of your firearms knowledge and experiences to directly or authorize someone to make a book from all of your notes and videos. I have a specific question about 30-06 and 300 WM handloading. Is it always a good idea to load these cartridges long within 0.010"-0.020" from touching the lands if the magazine box allows it? For accuracy and more importantly to lower pressures to increase powder volume.

You don't have much on the 270win. I use H4350 powder. With so so results. Do you have powders you recommend for the 270win? My exact load is... 54gr of H4350. She'll shoot a little under a inch at 100yrds. I hunt mostly deer sized game. Any recommendations on other powders to try, would be appreciated. Amen, Bro! I have used 760, but mostly load my '06 with 180 Nosler Partitions with H4831 or Norma 205. My loads do 2730 in my 22" barrel, I could get more, but I am satisfied with that. BTW, I ONLY shoot live game with Nosler Partitions. Cup and core for target practice and plinking only. I have had WW ball powders go bad on me, so I dont use them any more. I have some original WW2 H4831 in the original paper cans, and it is still good. 'Nuff sed.
