I contacted Randy and had him build me a no BS hunting rifle. I ended up with a pre 74 Model 70 in 270 win. I'm super happy with the gun. Absolutely zero issues with the rifle or the fit and finish.
I got a rifle that I was told by the guy I got it from that randy built it several years ago that's how I found him on RU-vid but I got the gun for my son to hunt elk with when he was 12 years old and my boy loves that gun it's probably the best shooting smoothest gun i've ever shot I'm so glad that I was able to get it but I have felt bad that the guy I got it from was having hard times and needed the money wish I had a second gun just like it it's awesome rifle
I like to hear that. I spoke with him on the phone and he is as nice, helpful and very patient for a man so busy. I'll be sending him a couple of Mauser sporters needing help.
The older I get the more appreciative I am of hand made craftsmanship. The rifles you build are not only beautiful but are a matched well to their purpose. I'll bet your grandfather would be proud.

Very well put Randy! I agree we have fallen into this thought that we need big varmint/target type rifles to hunt game with. I fell into this somewhat back in the 90's as a young hunter. My quarry was calling coyotes and I thought I needed a 26" heavy barrel 22-250 to carry around and call coyotes. Boy have I learned my lesson. Your description of a hunting rifle is spot on. It took me some years but I now carry a 243 with a 22" barrel with a 2.5x10 scope and the rifle weighs around 8.5lb. Great video and thanks for your knowledge.
Would love to hear your thoughts on carbon steel vs stainless steel barrels from the standpoint of a hunting rifle. Also, would be interested in one of your cartridge breakdowns on the old 30-06 and how it stacks up to some the new hot rod options. Keep up the awesome content!
Excellent video with so much truth and knowledge. I have almost the same exact setup. I have a stainless Tikka T3x 270 with a synthetic stock with a Leupold 3-9x40 on it. It’s my go to rifle for most game that I hunt. At 7.5 lbs with scope it’s lightweight enough for carrying but heavy enough to shoot well. My other gun is a Ruger M77 MKII 300 Win Mag with blued finish and walnut stock. It has a Leupold fixed 6x scope on it. It weighs just under 9 lbs with a scope. This is my rifle for when I need a little more punch than the 270. I agree about scopes. All anybody needs is a good 2-7 or 3-9 variable or a fixed 4x or 6x scope. As a matter of fact I just shot a 1/2” group at 100 yards with my Ruger M77 300WM loaded up with handloaded 200 gr Partitions. You don’t need high power magnification to shoot small groups or to hunt medium-large size game. I’ve found that 7.5-8 lbs lbs with scope is a good rifle weight chambered for moderate recoil cartridges. I prefer 8.5-9 lb rifles chambered for anything more powerful than a 30-06. I find that rifles under 7.5 lbs are hard to shoot in the field. Anything heavier than 9 lbs is just too heavy to carry.

Yes...the extra weight of a couple more inches of barrel are worth the carrying... Just made a 26" .308, and it gets quire a bit more speed than the run-of-the-mill 20-22" tubes....
when I started varmint hunting Ground Hogs was the only Varmints we had around here and I would spend all day walking some very big farms the only varmint rifle I had was a old model 700 Remington ADL with a slim stock and a fixed 6 power Redfield scope on 2 piece Weaver bases .it was chambered in 243 ,and it was the only center fire rifle I had and I hunted Ground Hogs all summer with it and it was my Deer rifle when fall came around .I bagged several Deer with it and a truck load of Ground Hogs .it was a Good Rifle .I worked all summer one year and bought a 30-06 ,it was a Mauser Model 3000 ,I still have that rifle.I swapped the Remington for a little Bay Mare ,and she was my only means of transportation for a few years until my Uncle gave me a old 1968 GMC 3/4 Ton Truck that we had put a Motor from and old Nova in after we worked on the motor .that Old truck would haul me and my Deer in and out of any fire trail and it had a great granny gear in it .it would climb a tree and it could go anywhere a logging skidder would go with a set of V-bar ice chains on the back tires.once the rear axel came out while I was coming down the steep end of Round Mountain and I had to drive her into a big white pine to get stopped I was going to jump but the back tire was sticking out the axel had come out on the drivers side.so I just went in the ditch and rode it out into the woods and thankfully there was a tree big enough to stop me at the end of that ditch.lol it was either hit the tree or go off the end of the ridge into a big deep hollow.but I still have my old 30-06 its not as lite as the savage Axis I bought a few years ago the Savage is a 270 Winchester it was a cheap little Rifle,but I like it and it shoots great .and its all the rifle I need .I don't go off to the woods for days at a time anymore.after I had a major stroke my wife maakes me go with one of my sons or my daughter if I go mushroom hunting .LOL but my Doctor says he is all for going hunting and prowling the mountains my therapist would come ny too work with me and I started taking him on hikes he stopped coming after I showed him the tracks of a big sow Black Bear with her cub in the hollow by my house .LOL I got my walking stick and my old 3 screw 44 magnum Ruger and he asked what the handgun was for and I told him I can't run and its for the Bears .lol
I hunt with Winchester model 70 featherweight in 30-06 with a 3.5-10x40mm Leupold scope. It’s my go to rifle, light accurate and can take down anything in the country.
Thanks for the video, 100% agree. Picked my daughter up a 6 1/2 pound .243 for deer earlier this year. I live in near Lewiston, absolutely surrounded by sporting outfitters. Not one shop had a fixed 6× Leupold on the shelf, not one. All the idiots behind the counters wondered why I didn't want variable 14× Leupold or more powerful Vortex. I said it's a .243 not a sniper rifle. Back when you worked in Lewiston, there would've been a shop called Lolo Sporting Goods, been there since the 50's, still open. The folks there knew what they were talking about, still didn't have a Leupold fixed 6, but they're more guns n reloading supply than an outfitter. Spent my money there on a Leupold 3.5-10 that was on sale. If you're in the area and need stuff, I recommend checking them out before going to the big outfitters.
The problem with scopes of high power is if the game is close , its like looking at the barn, and if it is running , there is no chance of a shot looking through the scope & I don’t fancy shooting from the hip ! On My Sav 99/308 I mounted a Bushnell 1.5-4.5 with tip off mount so i can use open sights in a snow blizzard or socked in fog ! Did so in 1965 it has never failed me !
Excellent video! My eldest son hunts with a 1953 Husqvarna .30-06 topped with a Leupold VX2 3x9, my younger son hunts with a 1931 Springfield .30-06(sporterized)topped with a Leupold VX2 3x9 and my younger daughter hunts with a BSA .270 Win(sporterized WW II Mauser 98)topped with a Leupold 3x9 Compact. I hunt with a Win mod 70 338 WM and an FN Mauser 98 and my wife hunts with a Cooey mod 71 .270 Win. The 338 wears a Leupold but the Cooey and Fn need an upgrade. All are practical hunting rifles with 22-24 inch barrels and weigh in between 8 and 10 pounds ready to hunt(scope, ammo and sling)

That 270 is over the top beautiful.. Something dreams are made of, but far beyond my financial reach. Years ago I got lucky and bought a new in box Win model 670 chambered for 30-06. I now handload 165gr BTSP's in it and get 1/2 to 3/4 MOA . I know the trajectories for these loads from trials at the range, but also verify group size out to 500 yards. I Hunt almost exclusively in Woodlands, so I put a 1 1/2 to 6 power Aus Jena scope on the rifle and have never needed to take a shot beyond 200 yards even though the rifle is theoretically good for twice that. Light weight rifle with birch stock I can drag through the thick stuff and not worry about scratches, but still have wide field of view through super clear piece of glass. My point is that Even if you are poor; Randy is a wealth of knowledge we would all benefit from listening to. Great channel.
Agreed. I have a converted 6.5 SWED. Same thought process. Weights 7.5 pound on a synthetic stock. Low mount scope (Leopold 3x9). I call it my business rifle..it just works for whitetails.
I like these old-timey Hunters! Doing their own rifle builds and reloads, a Herter's catalog at the ready, and maybe something by Kephart or "Bull Cook" on the side table. These are the type I grew up learning from, and I think this man makes sense. Sitting in a blind was even less challenging than ice-fishing to me; I'd rather learn to be a better tracker. Exactly what needs to be said! My hunting rife of all time is a plain old Remington BDL 30/06, a model 78 sportsman 270, and a 280 Remington BDL, I just can't tell any difference between the three. They all.work very well for me.
My 270 WSM Browning X Bolt is light, shoulders and lines up quick and plenty of oomph to drop whatever happens in front of it. Here in Maine I stalk/track, and a long shot for me would be 80-100 yds, and really infrequent that I'd have that much open area. Most times I'm looking at 30-60 yards. I've got a Burris 1-6 scope on top and it spends most of its time on 1X. The rifle has a nice sling for it, but that stays in my pack until I need to have both hands for draggin one to the truck. Hand-loaded 150 Grain Norma Oryx and away we go! Love everything you've said here! So much more rewarding to get after them!
Great words of wisdom! I have a custom built 300 win mag that weighs just under 8lbs. This is how I did it. Defiant Deviance Hunter receiver, 26 in. Proof Research carbon fiber barrel, AG Composite carbon fiber stock, APA little bastard brake, Leopold VX6 HD 3x18 fire dot mounted with Tally light weight rings.
When i started learning my trade i wanted to be as good at it as anybody could be . So to be able to get there you have to learn the basics till you get to the point it can't be done any better then move on . So i agree with TRG that a hunting rifle only needs the basics that perform at a high level . MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL !!

Thank you for posting this Randy, I could not agree more. I have this same discussion every year around the campfire at hunting camp. In my younger years I played with big scopes and the "Tacticool" stuff somewhat, and found very quickly that for hunting, they were boat anchors. Although I do not own any of your rifles, I do have a few custom rifles that had belonged to my old friend and gunsmith Jim Cloward. Two of them are .300 Magnums, one a .300 Winchester and the other a Wildcat he designed that is like a .300 Weatherby improved, without the freebore. Both of these rifles have 2.5-8 Leupolds on them. That was always Jim's favorite hunting scope. And I have to say in my older years and limited experience, it is mine as well. I have been a long range rifle competitor (that is how I met Jim) for many years. And like you, Jim and I feel the same concerning long range hunting. If I have a bad hold, a wind or light change, or perhaps too much coffee that day and put one in the 8 ring at long range, so what, the only thing I did was hurt my score. Do that on a beautiful unwounded animal like an elk, it's a crime. Thanks again for posting these, and beautiful rifles by the way. In fact your .300 Weatherby Model 70 there with the black stock looks identical to my (Jim's) .300 Winchester in an old Pacific Research stock. Thanks again and God bless!
I agree 100%. I too have found a dot reticle to be excellent for fast and accurate target acquisition. Currently use a Vortex Crossfire 3x9 x 40 scope with V-Brite Dot reticle on my predator and deer hunting rifle which is a Ruger American Predator bolt action in .243 caliber weighing less that 7 1/2 pounds total. Can shoot 1/2" moa all day long!
Well said sir. My late father used one rifle for everything. The 375 h&h was always up to the task. His double barreled 458 win mag was held by his gun porter or batman for a follow on shot on elephant, but it was never required. The first shot must be accurate , for an injured animal will not be deterred easily. My father hunted extensively in both Africa and India and was in his early life an instructor and an officer in the British Indian Army before he was sent to fight the Japanese in Burma for two years. The trigger pull I was taught, was extremely important and only the limbrical muscles of the hand should pull the trigger. I practiced for hours and days on end before this became second nature to me !
Man, you can really hear that wind getting with it. I went on a pronghorn hunt a few months ago near Douglas, Wy. The wind was busting over 50mph that day. Heck, that’s nothing more than a stiff breeze up there. Anyway, I took my Weatherby chambered in 270 Winchester outfitted with a VX-3 with a duplex reticle. Im firing 130 grain Federal Fusion ammo and I dropped two does both at ranges of around 225 yards. Hardly any wind deflection to speak of. Both of them went down in their tracks. As a matter of fact, I’m eating a big bowl of pronghorn chili as I’m writing this to you. Every cartridge has its place. That being said, the 270 has been ruling the roost like a Banty rooster for nearly a century for one reason. It just works. I now many rifles in many different chamberings but it seems as though I always reach for my 270. Blessings to you and wishes for a prosperous new year.

Being over scoped can be a bad thing especially when the adrenaline is pumping hard. I don't agree with a lot of things you say but I agree with some of this. If you have a designated rifle for each game species you are hunting such as a heavier rifle for antelope vs a light rifle for mountain elk you may hunt with some high powered scoped rifles but if you are looking for a rifle that you can hunt anything anywhere this is good info. If you have a 15 lb set up so you can shoot well at 1000 yards it isn't going to do you much good if you are too fatigued to make the shot or complete the stalk.
Makes me happy to hear a quality gunsmith that is a fan of the 270 for hunting. I've been blessed to harvest a little over 130 whitetails, maybe 80 (pure guess) of which were with a rifle, and maybe 60 of those with a 270. For me, it just works.
Bought a Tikka T3X roughtech in ember stock in 30-06. Upgraded my hunting pack to a Kuiu Pro 6000. Now figuring out how to shoulder the rifle properly since the shoulder straps on the pack are wider.

I started hunting in 2008 and purchased my only big game rifle - a new 2006 Winchester Model 70 in .270 Win (last year made in NH) - to match my first small game rifle, a mid-80’s push-feed Winchester Model 70 in .223 Rem. I’ve killed most of my animals with that .270 with a Leupold VXii 3-9x40 scope and it’s been good, but a little heavy at 9lbs 15oz field-ready, it’s blued and has a wood stock. Last summer I decided to upgrade and chose the weather-resistant Tikka T3x Superlite in 7mm Rem Mag weighing 7lbs 4oz field-ready using the extended 4-round magazine and topped it with the 18oz Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44 CDS. I reload the 160g Accubond to 2950fps. This tool has made mountain hunting more pleasurable to say the least! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 and God bless. - Scott
My favorite rifle unless you’re talking about my custom Mauser in 280 is my Tikka T3 in 243. Probably not one of Randy’s favorites but dang it’s just slick. Great bolt, light, fast pointing, and a joy to shoot. I load 85gr bullets to 3300fps and it’s lightning when it hits an animal. The best handling rifle is a Savage 99 hands down. The perfect center for carrying, natural when it shoulders. In 300 Savage, it’s a .308 in disguise. For 100 yards and in it’s perfect loaded with the 180gr round nosed bullets. Puts the smack down on what it hits.
I learn a lot from this channel. I take your wisdom as gospel. I got myself a proof research elevation, chambered in .308 win. Put a leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x50 on it. Weighs less than 7 pounds unloaded. 20" barrel with the 1:10 twist. It keeps me in my capable range, and feels crazy light.
The Real Gunsmith You are welcome. Have come to love Henry lever guns and hopefully after taxes come in will get the Henry color case hardened 45-70. Got my first deer and it was mountain buck on December 19th. Just a youngster but good eating! After the king at the very top of the mountain. He’s at least 6.5 years old and has 10+ points. I spooked him out of a pocket just below the ridge during a hard rain. If I’d had my shotgun ready, I’d have his meat and he’d be at the processor’s being mounted. He’s kind of like a ghost. As far as I know I’m the only other hunter to see him. Wednesday is the last day for deer season here in SC mountains. Going hopefully then. Rain moved out this morning and learned the hard way to not hunt on the day before or after the rain-rain does a 360 constantly.
That's a gorgeous 270 you have. My wife, and I have a kimber walnut stock in 243 for deer. we topped that rifle with a variable 10x scope by a company called Maven. For out in the plains in Nebraska we just ordered a 257 Weatherby. Hopefully we will have it by this coming season, although you might not like it as much, as its set up more for longer range shots. Not too far. About 500yds is its cap for deer size game. In my opinion anyways.
Amen sir! Couldn't agree with you more. I wish I could convince a couple of my hunting buddies to downsize there rigs! My favorite western rifle is a 7mm weatherby ultra lite with a 12oz 3.5x10 Leopold that has taken mule deer and antelope from 150yds to a little over 600yds. It's a rifle I can carry all day and can simply point and shoot. I leave the scope set at 6x for shootin out to 300yds and for longer shots to 600yds I crank it to 10x and know my impact with the Boone and Crockett reticle. No parallax adjustments, no twisting turrets, just point and shoot! KISS!
First of all though's rifles you made are really nice. I have been hunting awhile myself, about 40 years. I have shot a lot of deer and a few bear. In that 40 years I have shot one deer over 100 yards with most of them under 30 yards. To be honest I think it's just the area I'm in. By the way my main hunting rifle is a model 70/ 270. 1/4-3/8" groups at 100 yards with hand loads.
Agreed, the highest I go in magnification for a hunting scope is a 2x16 or 2x14 in a bushnell, Athlon or Buris. In my ungulate hunting rifles (eg. for deer, sheep, elk or moose) For bear my preference is a 1-8 power or a vintage 2-7 in see thru mounts & having back up iron sights for the from & a peep or ghost rear sight. All on a pump action rifle, or a lever action & possibly a drilling or double rifle. For tacticle a simple tikka t3x in 6.5x55 having a bull barrel a decent stock and running 83 to 90 or up to 108 grains & a good slow ( albeit the most efficient & cleanest buring powder) yu can find.
Love your videos! Much good information. I like .45-70 so much that I'm building a Springfield TrapDoor, but my Marlin will be best for hunting, although I probably won't be hunting anymore! (GOD BLESS YOU ALL! )
interesting information .. I'm not a hunter so your perspective and experience is important to me as I learn .. my intro to the topic had to do with simply inheriting a Savage 99-F in 300 savage and later purchasing a Winchester model 94 in 30-30 .. and mistakenly buying a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Remington Magnum .. now I ask why. I must have had that 300 Savage 99-f for 20 years before shooting it .. and was immediately impressed with how it carries and works .. in this modern day era we are missing so much information as to how our grandparents survived and thrived with simple tools and common sense .. so, old rifles have peaked my interest .. thank you for sharing the information from your experience.
I believe that a good rifle is like a good choice in a wife. If you choose wisely you will do well to protect them and you will never be disappointed by them. I agree with you in terms of some people who choose to shoot unethical distances for ego. We don’t hear the stories of unsuccessful shots at long distances where the animal is wounded, runs off, and dies a slow painful death or chooses an underpowered cartridge that’s in fad. I recently saw a guy who was dressed in a guillie suit and had a 28lb 6.5 creedmoor on a huge bipod hunting deer in CA. Apparently he used the gun in PRS shooting. Anyway he didn't move from that position all season. We carried out two deer past him and waved as we were going home. These guys need a grandpa to show them how to do things right!
I’m have a model 70 Winchester pre 64 in a 30/06 butt when I baught it had heavy bull barrel just always wondered if that was factory barrel the stock looks factory this always been my favorite rifle!!!!

I agree with a lot said here, I hunt Deer & Antelope with a .Model 70 264 Win Mag I with a Leupold 4.5x14 40mm in a HS Precision Stock, I reload a Nosler 130gr AB and am quite happy with it. I have shot game from Coyotes to Caribou with excellent results with my longest shot on a Antelope at just over 500 yards. My Big rifle is a PreWar Model 70 300 H&H Mag in its original stock, with a 3.5x10 40mm Leupold , I reload these days a 180gr Nosler AB. No it's not as fast as the bigger 30cal Magnums but it gets the job done. I love the smooth feeding of the 300 H&H Mag.

Great video. I hunt the piney woods of East, TX so my idea of a perfect hunting rifle is a little different from yours although I do have many sporting rifles chambered in some of the classics. I prefer to be in the woods with a light, handy lever gun in 30/30, 35 Remington, 38/55, 45 colt, or similar. My go to rifle is a Model 94 rebore in 38/55 with a Lyman tang sight, but I have a Savage 99 in 300 Savage that should be hitting the woods shortly.
When I was young with proverbial "20 year old eyes", I had a Browning auto in 30-06. I shot coyotes with it at up to 500 yards. Open sights. Wouldn't dream of trying that now. My favorite chambering now is a 358 Win. Granted range is less than a magnum chambering might be capable of, but it fits the ranges I hunt at now, and it anchors the game "on the spot". While my choice of caliber isn't going to change because of outside influences, I would like to hear what you think of the cartridge yourself. Call it a curiosity question of a person with a world of experience.
You are correct from the 56 years of my experience out in the field.. One one rifle I mounted at that time when the new Leupold 3.5 X 10 when that scope was released, I never needed any more for power than 10X and at 400 yards is pushing it but with rock solid rest I've taken elk. Jack O' Conner did fine with his .270 Win for years and took big game without problems. Fine ctg and I know folks who still hunt with the .270 win. .. I agree with you on choice of the .270 win over the 7mm mag for big game.. Except the 7mm has heavier bullet weights if a person needs needs that 175 grain bullets. Very well said..
My favourite hunting rifle is my 35 Whelen . I had it built on a Remington 700 action . I put a Wilson stainless barrel on it with a 1-12 twist . It has a McMillan hunter stock and a trigger tech trigger . My scope is a simple vortex viper hs . It’s a 2.5x10x44. The weight with the scope is 8.6 pounds . it shoots .5 moa with 225 grain nosler accubonds with a muzzle velocity of 2750. This rifle will handle elk out to 400 yards but I rarely shoot past 150 as I’m in the mountains of northern bc and I hunt the dark Timbers . It’s great grizzly bear medicine also
A 1996 Savage 110, 270 caliber (pre lawyer trigger) and a VXIII Leupold has been my deer getter, and its got a lot of them. A Sig model 400, 5.56 of mine does the same
@@TheRealGunsmith wish I could make it out there. Probably never will. But if the chance ever comes open I sure will call ahead of time. True hunting ways true gun smithing is becoming a lost art I'm my opinion. Just to let you understand me my 2 favorite hunting rifles for deer are savage 270 and 30-30 win. Then I have other rifles for other uses just got a savage stealth 338 Lapua Magnum just waiting to get the right optics for it. That is mainly for long range target shooting.
