Loading up some of the cast bullets I made using IMR 3031 and Black Powder. These are th 420 grain gas check bullets Created with Movie Studio Platinum
These forgotten calibers are great. Many of these calibers will do everything we need plus some and are simple to and fun to load for having much versatility.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing Dave. I have been through several auto primers since I broke the little handle lever on my old lee hand primer. They have all been troublesome in 1 way or another. Lee no longer makes replacements parts for the older model. So after messing with the other brands and finding them lacking, I bought one of Lee's newer versions. And low and behold the dam handle lever deal on it looked exactly like the on I broke. So I tried it out and it worked. The old lee is back in action. I have a hard time throwing anything out and that tendency was reinforced by reincarnating a tool that worked well for years.
I get irritated when a trusted tool goes down and can't b repaired. Sounds like u lucked out with this deal. I like the Sinclair but it is slower one at a time, the Lee is a great tool for the money tho. Some of the primers were packed so u could dump them into the tray right side up, these federal primers are packed on their side so you ha e to flip them upright. Thanks for dropping in
Black powder max posible pressure is 15k psi, shotgun max is 32k psi, modern rifle powder max is 63k psi. I was able to achieve 62k on a 50 BMG with a 2" dia 4140 steel and universal receiver, M 33 ball 690 gr. I was using Hogodons 50 BMG powder 238 gr and no 35 primer. The transducer was set at .100" beyond the case, 1.75 milliseconds from det to exit of muzzle on a 45 " long barrel. This was done at Pickennitiney Arsenal in NJ.
@@murraysanders7779 I did try it in suppressed loads for 223. It worked great but couldn't get enough pressure to work the semi action, but in a bolt gun it was great.
I really need to get loading again. I think I have three times the amount of unloaded brass compared to loaded brass. Empty brass ain't good for much! About half of mine though, I'll need to cast bullets first.....it takes a lot of time I just don't have right now..... I didn't see an ad on this video. Did they monetize it?
ME too especially with open sights, I do a little better with the verneer sights at longer ranges but with the lever gun its capable of more accuracy than I can see. Thanks for stoppin in
Good job Dave. I have always enjoyed loading, but most of my loading was for Trap and Skeet. We are now approved to use straight wall ammo for deer in Ohio so i'm thinking on a 45/70, 450, 444, or the 350 Legend.
I enjoy the shooting more, but can't afford to buy as much as I like to shoot and some of it I have to just make anyway. I enjoy thee making of the components tho and putting it together. Thanks for lookin in.
I was loading a 405 gr .45/70 slug in may 1886 win. The Bullet was to long where the crimping groove was . So I reseated the bullet & crimped at the base of the slug.
Loved the video. I'm curious how many grains of IMR 3031 you are loading? I can find some data from Lyman on IMR 4198 but nothing on the IMR 3031 which right now is much more available. Thanks!
I am hesitant to give loads out because I don't know what u are loading it in. I worked up a load with light 45 70 data. The older manuals have it listed. Thanks for stopping by
@@BuckskinDave Understand. I have been shooting 40 grains of 3031 in my 45-70 with a 350 grain copper jacketed fn. I have selected a 405 grain cast for the 45-90 and thought I'd start at about 40 also in that load.
Not sure where I went wrong, but I tried dropping 80 grains of triple 7 ffg down the drop tube and it more than fills the 45-90 cartridge. This was 80 grains by volume measured like you do in this video. Any thoughts as to why the 80 will not fit?
The Lyman loading manuals have smokeless loads, so do books by Mike Venturino also check forums, I don't reveal loads because of you tube and liability.
That depends on too many things for me to answer, go to Hodgdon's page and look in their online loading manual it should give you a good starting point
That depends on the bullet I'm loading.. The case is just under 2.5 inches. Some bullets stick lout further than others and also depends on the gun. The single shot can take a longer cartridge but the lever gun won't feed the longer ones.Another consideration is depth of the throat in the gun.
It's a vegetable card made for this stuff, Buffalo Arms has it. sometimes I don't use the card also depending on the hardness of the lead. Thanks for stopping by
