I'm going to do a ladder test for my Sharps using 5744, Starline brass and 405 grain bullets. This video shows the preparation of the cartridges. I am also going over the Sizer/Lubricator step of cast bullet reloading. The next video will show the results of the test.

Very nice ! Well explained - I appreciate the time taken to break it all down. I've been accumulating supplies for the last several years. Done some - very little - reloading. Hoping to get very serious about it shortly. Thanks again !!!

I have used the 5744 in my Sharps with different weight bullets. How ever I get the very best accuracy with 3100. It came from Israel but I cannot find it for sale anymore. It does not seem to matter but with the 5744 there is always a lot of unburned powder in the barrel. I will be trying the IMR 4831 because it is supposed to be a replacement for the out of production 3100.

Dont know about you but even with lighter loads I found 5744 with hard cast bullets to cause some leading. Not sure if you experienced that or not.
@RJ-sr5dv

Did you experiment with unsized at .460 first to see if they shot accurately ?
@matthewberg5108

If using jacketed bullets, how would you know if the pressures were too much for the gun? Cast bullets have a max fps then leading starts to become a problem. Other than brass splitting/cracking how would I be able to tell if I'm approaching the threshold of the gun? I currently have a new production 1886 Winchester in 45-70. I want to eventually get one in 45-90 but can't find any load data for shooting smokeless rounds through it. Would I just use the 45-70 load data?
@jb-xc4oh
@jb-xc4oh 7 месяцев назад
Speer manual #14 has load data specifically for 1886 Winchester pressure levels of 28,000 CUP for a 45-70. You'll need a chronograph to measure velocities, the velocities are determined by pressure for a specific powder and bullet combination. A load for a 45-70 can be increased a small amount (a few grains) because the larger case volume of a 45-90 will result in lower velocities with 45-70 load data.

I find that .459-.460 usually shoots best in my 1885 45-70

Thank you for the vid. I see you are not using gas checks, so it will be interesting to see what velocities you get, up to the point you start getting gas cutting + leading. What lead mix were you using...wheel weights, soft lead, lead tin mix, ect? I was also not aware there was a smokeless powder for "big bore" rifles, that was bulky enough to almost fill the case, so that an additional filler (cream of wheat or cotton) was needed to prevent squib loads. Please post the results of your tests (weather permitting).

snoman003 Yes I’ll post my results. I’m using 20 to 1 for my lead.

I feel that even with a 3/8's gap between powder and projectile there has to be deviation in the rate of powder burning and, performance of the round down range as to overall accuracy and consistency. With the cartridge lying flat in the chamber, the powder will spread, and burn at different consistencies. In lieu of old school cream of wheat; I have not heard that since "North-South Skirmish" days of the 50's and 60's. Cotton, if not fluffed will also ignite at some rate of burn, usually beyond the bore but, will "impact" the rate of burn and, muzzle velocity. You may also use hollow fill wadding as well that does not impact the rate of burn and, all but vaporizes at point of burn, and muzzle discharge. A 3/8's wad between powder and projectile would be better.... With different loads, different sizes of wadding will have to be used. There is some discussion of over compressing powders but, I think it is minor with the limited amounts in these cartridges and the range of loads.. Great coverage and, compliments of the very organized work space.... Clean usually means organized, safety, and consistency....!!!
@jb-xc4oh
@jb-xc4oh 7 месяцев назад
Lots of smokeless loads do not fill the case in many different calibers, not usually a problem. A Black powder cartridge is different and there can be no air gap between powder and bullet.@@stephenbrown2567

Thank you for the video. Which brand of Sharps rifle are you shooting. Italian or American? I'm new to the Sharps rifles myself learning all I can. Have you ever shot BP. Thanks Again.
@Sharps-im4lb
@Sharps-im4lb 4 года назад
Bill Fletcher I have shot BP in my 1886 Gras but it stinks :). My Sharps is from C Sharps in big timber MT Big Timber is home to 2 sharps rifle companies. The other one, whose name I cant remember, made the Quigley guns. Booth are good but C Sharps has a shorter lead time.
