Come Join us on a Food Tour in Shillong, India 🇮🇳
Today we went out for some local Food here in Meghalaya. However, before that, we had to grab us a local black Tea in a little tea house in Shillong.
Afterward, we went to grab the biggest Momo we ever saw!
We went on a little walking tour through downtown Shillong, and strolled through the street market. Here they offer so much Fish, fresh fruits, meat and so much more.
We settled for some Indian Plums and some Passion Fruit, on recommendation of our khasi Friend.
As we went on, we stumbled over a woman selling Betel Nuts, so we had our first try of that. Many local Workers chew these Nuts, so we had to give it a try!
To end off our day, we grabbed us some traditional meghalayan khasi Food, and also had our first Fish in India.
What a great day full of eating and new experiences!
The North Eastern Food in India really is so different from the Food you get in Mainland India. It's amazing to explore so many different areas and Cultures of this huge Country!🇮🇳
The Food here in the North East is definitely worth a check-out, and we are hyped for more!
Cheers Guys 🙏🏼

The green betel leaf is called paan, the hard nut you ate was betel, and the white paste was lime which is a very strong acid. Some people are addicted to this combination which is really not safe, betel being carcinogenic. You may surely try the sweet pan which is devoid of beetle and lime paste, and is safe & delicious when consumed limited.

North-East India is not just d most diverse region in India by far, it's also d most naturally stunning. Home to 200+ indigenous ethnicities/tribes with their unique cultures, traditions, languages, attires, cuisines etc, this unique/gorgeous tropical region is an unexplored paradise. Although whole NE is beautiful, Meghalaya & Arunachal in particular r breathtaking, specially during monsoon 😍

Northeast is the first place where Momo got famous in India. Maybe because we already have a diet of less spices involved, it got popular like crazy. Momo is basically dumplings from Tibet. Interesting Information: Though India was hub of spices we from Northeast were not that connected to it. The Bengali traders first brought Mustard Oil and also brought spices. The whole Northeast likes Bamboo shoot and yes we use herbs and different kinds of chillies for flavouring food. I am from Assam I can call out peethas for sweetness but there are peetha which are salted too. Also do try bhot jolokia it's the hottest pepper in the world.

What you had (the leaf et al) was Kwai, betel nut processed under running water until they are ripe. The leaf is called paan. The white bit is lime paste. Chewed together, it turns red and gives you a high. Makes your body feel warm. However, if you swallow the juices you get dizzy spells and can actually pass out.

Ah yes you guys will find many boiled food, also the food is more soupy bases, and we don't use basmati rice for every day. Northeast India has lots and lots of Rice type varieties. If you stop by Assam try the Fish recipe ( Masor Tenga) it's a staple here. Also pigeon and duck they are most favourite of Assamese people. And mash potatoes are famous too, we call it Aloo Pitika. It's heavenly. Dried fish and Fermented fish goes really good. If you visit Korea, there's a thing called that Koreans don't have breakfast concept as they have rice. It's kinda same here, we eat rice as breakfast, lunch and dinner. After the influence of other people we do have different breakfasts but it's still can be pointed out that most households prefer rice as breakfasts. Northeast cuisine focuses on less oil and spices as we ourselves can't eat much heavy things since it's quite used less in our own houses.Hence restaurants also try to keep things local and less spicy

@nithinnayak7696
@nithinnayak7696 Год назад
The green leaf is called a "Betel Leaf" and the hard thing is called "Betel Nut" or "Arecanut" and the white paste is "Calcium Carbonate". Calcium carbonate is the reason for making betel leaf eaters mouth "Red". Arecanut is slightly addictive for many people. Eating it after a meal is actually a tradition in south India (I don't know about other places). It is not bad for your health unless you eat more. 1 pan a day is quite healthy. The betel leaf has medicinal properties and is a good fiber source if you eat after a heavy meal and it acts a digestive. Calcium carbonate though needs to be eaten in very small quantity because it can burn your tongue if you add more. Limited quantity of Calcium carbonate makes your teeth and bones strong. (that's why they add it in small quantity in mili grams basically). The combination of these three items is actually considered as sacred and is used in Hindu worships called "pooja" in the south.

It's betel leaf with areca nut. The one you ate was simple one. You get variety in that. It's called 'Paan'. It is eaten after food. The paan consists of slaked lime ( white paste) catecheu, areca nut and tobacco. These are the basic things. But you get sweet paan also which will have fennel seeds, tamarind leaves, gulkand (made of rose petals), cherries, sometimes saffron (costly), slake lime and catecheu. It is Hot and astringent yet sweet. Due to its multiple fillings, the paan brings a fresh and cooling effect when relished. It's an ancient tradition in India. Ayurveda, promotes consumption of paan. It has medicinal property. It is high in carotenes, calcium, and vitamins like B3, B2, B1, and C. Very good for digestion of food. Sweet paan after chewing you can swallow. The simple one you must spit. Some people swallow. The red colour is because of catecheu. Have Bengali sweets if you are fond of sweets. Such as Roshogulla, shondesh, malpua, rasmalai, payesh, mishti doi, patishapta, chomchom etc. I don't know whether you will get it in Shillong. All these sweets are speciality of Kolkata. Enjoy the cuisines dear foodies. Keep Exploring ❤

The leaves are paan or betel leaf which are acidic in nature & the white paste is calcium hydroxide i.e slaked lime. Too much slaked lime can cause burning of the tongue. The seeds are areca nuts which are the psychoactive ingredient. The combination along with fennel seeds is said to be good for digestion after a meal. However some people are addicted to it primarily for the areca nuts.

The leaf itself is not bad at all. It does taste a bit peppery but just the leaf is good for health. The betel nut may cause hallucination to some. The white paste is edible lime. But yes one has to eat a very small quantity of it. Betel leaf is chewed almost all over India after meals or some eat it all day every 2 to 3 hrs. In other parts of India it is also made into a sweet condiment by adding rose jam, fennel seeds ect. A lot of our grand parents in India consumed a lot of betel leaf. The leaf is very high in vitamin B complex. And the edible lime is a very cheap calcium supllement. Next time you find a Pan shop try the sweet version without tobacco and betel nut. You might like that.

Actual plums from the Northeast are smaller. Sweet limes are bigger. How far I know there is almost no sweets originated in the Northeast. But you can find something similar like food eaten as breakfast. In the Northeast we do justice to our foods 😉. You'll find the good and genuine taste of your vegetables or meat. We don't enhance our food with the help of masala/Indian spices. We also eat lots of vegetables with or without meat.

The white paste is called "chuna" in hindi & "shun" in the traditional language in Shillong. It burns the tongue so never eat the "qwai" ( betel leaf & lime) without removing most of the paste.

Fun fact: The name Guwahati came from beetle nut. Guwa means beetle nut and hati means market in Assamese. So Guwahati means beetle nut market. Assam is one of the largest producer of beetle nut.
