Even Loch Lomond has deeply “nationalist” sentiments. It tells the story of a Scottish soldier, knowing he’s going to die in England, never seeing his love again, but will surely return to Scotland in spirit before his freed friend. If you’re a political type (I despise all politics equally), however you could easily make an independence narrative around Loch Lomond. I think flower of Scotland is unique in that it tells the story of a united Scotland, defeating an invading army. & the story of king Robert the Bruce, never giving up. Slowly freeing every part of Scotland, castle by castle - over 16 years. At bannockburn he had both lowland & Gaelic speaking Scots in his army. I think that’s why flower of Scotland is the correct choice. At least in principle, it unifies the nation, regardless of politics. In my opinion, the greatest mistake we make is to politicise works of art. I think all these songs tell a deep story for individuals.. Sorry for ranting.. but people do the same thing with Robert burns. Saying his poems are “left wing”, or “independence supporting”. If that’s all you can glean from burns’ poetry, you seriously don’t understand art

Loch Lomond is a song about two Jacobites... so it couldn't get much more nationalistic. I agree that there's better anthems than Flower of Scotland though.
