Update. This is the best video I have ever watched on woodworking on RU-vid. It is so simple, once Steve explains it, but deadly accurate. I bought the igauge which is incredibly cheap given its accuracy and versatility. I have used this technique for edge banding shaper bits and left only about a 1/64th inch on each side of the shelf with a 10 minute setup. I have thrown away all my setup blocks...this is so much more precise. I have gotten to the point where I often dont even do a test cut anymore. Thank you SO MUCH for this video.

Steve, this was an awesome learning time for me (and I imagine many others); when it comes to an aggravating problem; that has been around ever since this type cutter came about. You showed us exactly how to set it up for a perfect fit. Thank you kind Sir, for sharing your innate talents with us. I'll remember this one and I can't wait to use your method with this "dadgum" cutter.

Thanks so much Steve for such a precious explanation about this tool. This is a tool i avoid to use to any cost cuz of so didicult setup. Your method goes beyond of what i´v been using so far. Normaly i use several pieces of same dim of my final work by try n error. From now ? it will be easy :) thanks oce again.

If the cutter is 1” in height and your stock is 3/4” thick. Just set up the top of the cutter to 7/8” , then adjust your fence.

What is the height gauge you are using?
@IvanTheUndertaker
@IvanTheUndertaker Год назад
Thanks Steve. What is the point of having motorised spindle height adjustment? It's not exactly difficult to raise and lower by hand, and fine adjustment is easier.
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker Год назад
I believe the only advantage to motorized spindle height and fence adjustment is the ability to store a cutters setup and be able to easily go back to the same setting. Without that feature, I would prefer the manual adjustment. Steve

Hi Steve, This is an incredibly helpful video. Do you know if the lock miter cutter would work for compound miters like, for example, your compound miter serving tray? Thanks for all of your great videos! Dave
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker Год назад
Thank you Dave. Unfortunately, this will not work for compound miters as the bevel angle changes from 45 degrees when you start splaying the sides outward. Steve

After it’s all setup, can you save the cutter calibration and skip all of these steps next time? I’m considering the 45z xMotion and have heard it does not hold calibration well. Thanks.
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker 2 года назад
Yes, the calibration can be saved and used next time. In 5 years of ownership, it has lost its calibration once. Steve
@HybridWoodworks
@HybridWoodworks 2 года назад
@@extremewoodworker much appreciated to hear it stays calibrated. I assume from the saved program, you can type in a new material thickness and it then does the rest for you? Or are there more manual calculations to be done to get it right? Thanks again for these great videos. Very few folks with high end gear sharing their knowledge on RU-vid.
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker 2 года назад
@@HybridWoodworks Thanks Hybrid. I set the calibration zero for both the fence and the spindle height for a material with zero thickness. That way, when I need a new material thickness (that hasn't already been saved), I go to the program mode and create a new step for that material thickness by entering half the material thickness for both the fence and the spindle height. I name that step with the new material thickness so that it can be recalled later. Steve

Steve, have you ever run vertical pieces over this cutter. Like doing the front and then sides of a drawer? If so, how?
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker 2 года назад
Hi Michael. I have done something similar in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-21httnfgmV4.html While not a drawer, the operation is the same. Steve

I have a f 700 z felder shaper that I just got for my new shop; but do not have a power feeder and little experience with shapers. What would you recommend for a power feeder. I build custom furniture and am wanting to switch over from using routers to more often using the shaper.
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker 2 года назад
Hi Shilo. About 5 years ago, I upgraded from my Steff 2048 feeder to a CoMatic DC40 feeder with the Smart Stand. Both are excellent and reliable power feeders but the smart stand available for the CoMatic is a real timesaver for me when switching from horizontal to vertical feeding (a few seconds versus about 10-15 minutes). The downside to the smart stand is that it costs almost as much as the feeder. If you go with the CoMatic, I would suggest talking to Kyle at www.shopgearinc.com/ to answer any questions and get you the configuration and setup best for your applications. For Steff, I like J&G Machinery in North Carolina. I have no affiliations with either and am just a satisfied customer of both. If you are new to shapers, I recommend checking out Alpine Technical Workshops -Advanced Joinery for expert instruction. alpineworkshops.com/ Steve
