One of my favorite bits, the Drawer Lock bit makes it easy and quick to build drawers and all sorts of storage boxes. But the profile is also highly useful for making inserts throat plates and even table slides!
This video shows you how to set up and use the bit for all these options.

Great video. I came looking for setup on a drawer lock bit and came away with a half-dozen great ideas. I have tried this bit several times and gave up after ruining hundreds of board feet trying to get the edges aligned. I am heading out to the shop now to see if this simple setup works! All the other videos I have watched have a ton of "cut , match, cut again, match again, cut again, and on and on. Thanks for posting.

You made it look so easy to set I need to try this bit again. I just could not get the bit set and gave up will have to try it again. Thanks.

Thanks Richard. Remember that the setup for making a drawer box with the drawer face as a separate part is much easier, with just one setup for both sides of the cut. Making a box with the drawer face as the front of the box requires two separate set ups.

I was trying to decide on which bit to get. this video cinched it for me. I made a Throat plate years go but used a Dove tail bit to hold the insert which has gotten sloppy over the years. That's the first project for this bit. Thanks for the video!!

can you tell me which bit would be the best to use with 3/4 plywood,,the red one or the blue one,,,and can you tell me the size of the blue one,,when i go to amazon to order one,,it has 3 different sizes and none of them says 3/4,,,
@Woodcademy
@Woodcademy 3 года назад
Jeff, I do like the Freud bits quite a lot (the red one here). Also, Whiteside makes a very good version of this bit in a couple of sizes. On Amazon, this is the bit you want from Freud: amzn.to/3jYvd5d It will work with stock from 1/2" thick to 1" thick. There are cheaper bits on Amazon, but you really do get what you pay for and this joint has to be a clean cut to fit properly.
@mchristopher
@mchristopher 2 года назад
Thank you for making this video. I have the Freud version of this bit and like another commenter, I gave up on it after several attempts at setting it up. Is the 3/8” bit height setting the same regardless of the stock thickness? If I ever get this right, I’m definitely going to make a set up block!!! LOL!
@Woodcademy
@Woodcademy 2 года назад
Michael, So glad you found the video helpful. Generally, rather than trying to set a particular depth of cut, I aim for a leftover face of 1/8" thick to cover the end grain. In an actual 1/2" piece of stock, this would mean a 3/8" cut, but generally I am adjusting for the leftover tab thickness. These bits can be used for thicker stock, so the depth of cut would go deeper as well.
@mchristopher
@mchristopher 2 года назад
@@Woodcademy Thanks Ralph, Are you saying that the bit height can be higher than 3/8 if I’m using 3/4” stock? And the bit height stays the same for both cuts as well? I guess you could just cinch up on the depth of the second for whatever overlay you desire (if any) on the fronts?
@Woodcademy
@Woodcademy 2 года назад
@@mchristopher as you know there are two basic ways to use the bit. It you are making a drawer box that will get a drawer face added later, then the two cuts will be the same. If you are making a box with the finished drawer face as the front, those two cuts will be different set ups, and in that case you probably do not want the overhang to be only 1/8" thick.
@mchristopher
@mchristopher 2 года назад
@@Woodcademy thanks again Ralph, agree 100% with your last statement. My project is the former where I’m adding a drawer face later. I’ll head back to try it again with 3/4” stock and try it raising the bit to approx 5/8” thanks again! Subscribed.

i got one of these bits and it dont seem like it does very good in plywood,,
@Woodcademy

Jeff, Plywood is often difficult with big bits. I like to pre-cut the edge on the Table Saw, making a 45 degree bevel cut but being careful not to remove stock from the lock miter profile. With this pre-cut, the actual amount of material removed is reduced, making the cut easier and cleaner.

Mine end up with a fairly loose fit.
@Woodcademy
@Woodcademy 2 года назад
What brand bit? A loose fit may be a bad bit but is most likely due to run out in your router (worn bearings) or the parts are vibrating during the cut which removes more material. Double check the set up to ensure as little vibration or chatter as possible.
@sloppydoggy9257

I’m using the rockler bit. Its a brand new bosch 12 amp router but I extended the shaft a bit (maybe too much).
@Woodcademy
@Woodcademy 2 года назад
@@sloppydoggy9257 That can do it. At least 3/4 of the collet must have bit inside or it can grip at an angle so only the very end of the shank is being held. This can certainly add a wobble.
@johncharbottle8691
@johncharbottle8691 Год назад
the height of the bit is based on the thickness of the wood, isn't it?
@Woodcademy
@Woodcademy Год назад
Not really. Look at the two examples at the beginning of the video. The box that gets a drawer front added is the same setup as the much thicker drawer front. The stepped profile of the bit determines the height.
