Lock Picking Challenge Dice Concept

Love the idea.... We expanded on the idea and added where you pick and the type of tension. In a vice, in door, in your hand for location and top or bottom for tension and to get bonus points pick with your left vs righthand.

Great idea. You could even have dice with more faces and add things like the munitions, check and Christmas sets. Pair it with a regular size for pin sizes and the options are almost endless. :)

Ha, that's a great idea! Even to just play this with a regular die with associated pins to each number would be fun. I do think that a custom one like yours would be an amazing addition to the Reload kit, I'd certainly use it. This might even be the way I go to make my first challenge lock 👍

I came up with a game based on your die concept. 2 players the picker and the dealer. 3 dice, pin die, standard die, 10 sided die. Picker rolls all 3 dice. Pin die dictates what type of pin with the wildcard being dealer's choice, standard die dictates how many chambers are loaded or how many pins of that type are loaded. The 10 sided die is how many minutes the picker has to open then lock. (The 10 sided die can be substituted for a lesser or greater sided die for newbies and more advanced pickers respectively to add to the challenge and give a sense of urgency to the game). Dealer loads the chambers, picker may not see which chambers are being loaded the idea being you're picking the lock blind relying on feedback and sound in order to hone your skills as a picker. Players take turns after the alotted time has expired if they so choose. I call it blind man's break-in (you can call it whatever you like)

I like the idea. I tend to put too much though into setting up a practice lock. This would eliminate that and make up combinations that we wouldn't normally do.

I like the idea a lot. Especially as I have not received an order of slim picks and have only 2 schlage locks. Lockdown doesn’t help a person new to this hobby. Might I suggest that if you have 6 keys you could roll the dice to choose a key to use. Keep up the great work.

Cool idea. Second die would be for real world location such as left or right side of door, gate, padlock, etc. The numbered die used for pin location could also set a time constraint, using multiples for beginners and\or to add scenario-based environments such as gloves (winter, dishwashing, surgical, etc.), blindfolded, ear plugs, loud music, wet or oily hands, physical distractions, etc. Maybe a website with user submitted situations. Someone else mentioned using regular dice and just making assignments for each value so you'll need to make the set physically or visually special so people will "need" it more. I don't have a way to make dice, so I'd buy a set for a reasonable amount. 🙂

Now someone just needs to make an app that will randomly give pin types, key pin lengths, and placements. With an app, you could tell it what you're working with and it could mix it up for you.

Could use two different colored dice. One for pin type and one for position. Having said that, I think folks would buy a setup like you have so they would have the dice and rules in one kit. I like your idea.

Dear Lock Noob. I really like this idea and would buy some as I too was concerned about the subconscious bias making it easy. Also I also like the various 'Key Hole' art designs such as Sparrows (I'm still a huge fan of the 'Thief' video games I played as a kid) If Sparrows did this, with their usual 'lock/keyhole' type art with some cards as you had, that would be grand!

If you made a kit with pins and the dice I would 100% buy it!

These should be on the Sparrow website! Or somewhere I can purchase them lol. I own a 7 pin repinnable lock, and would enjoy giving these a try and really testing my picking skills 😁

I like the idea of them, but not sure I would actually buy any. I’d say either pitch it to Sparrows or do a pre-sale like Kickstarter or GoFundMe so you know the sales are there before you do a production run. Either way, cool concept and thank you for sharing this! 😊

You could have custom ones as optional extras with the Sparrows pins like the Munition and Check as well as individual or as a set. I'm sure some people will try to collect them all! :-)

I do like this concept. You could expand it almost infinitely. Say you had a third die and six repinnable locks, perhaps with a combination of cores from the Core Trainer set, or different lock types, such as an AL1000 family, a repinnable euro and so forth. You could be mean to your soon-to-be ex friends by one person getting a Kwikset and the next getting a tight paracentric keyway, a dimple lock and so forth. The only downside in my mind is that it takes a minute to roll the dice but a lot longer to configure the lock before you're ready to get stuck into it, so a lot of dead time is involved between rounds. Perhaps you could reduce the boredom factor between rounds with some other locksport-related activity. Maybe sorting out your pinning kit and untangling your mass of springs... or is that just me? 😂

I think the fidget spinner concept would be great in a anxious time

That is a very cool idea. The wild options you could add any pin you want. I think its fine just the way it is. But what I want to know is how I can get one of those cylinder holders. I love that design.

6 dice, different colors. once color for each position. and/or use the standard die to decide the length of the key pin.

I like the randomness idea but it would be simpler to mix the pins in a bag & pull them out at random.

I'd either buy one or maybe help manufacture them for you

This would be fun at meetups to have little challenges for fun. I could see myself using these to pin up a few of my practice locks to make SURE they are randomly pinned. Programmers know that humans are the weakest link. We are likely consciously/subconsciously pinning up our practice locks in a somewhat similar manner each time. The dice would help break that cycle by making it more random. Thus, improving your picking skills! Nice little fun lock related thing to add to the collection as well. I am interested in one for sure!

This is a great idea. It looks really fun. One idea I have for an additional challenge would be to roll the regular dice to make random key bittings.

It certainly mixes things up and makes very good use of the Sparrows repinning kits, should you choose to use them.

great idea to randomly pin a lock

I've been using a roll table with much a similar concept like this. A six-sided die to determine where the pin goes and a ten-sided die to determine the driver pin. With that I can tweak the chance of a certain security pin from showing up while still practicing the knowledge of previous added pins.

Looks great fun - I would like the idea if not too expensive to buy or make - have to look at your cutaway lock video - I have a couple of Mul-T locks that i want to make into re-pinnable with grub screws - not sure how to start

I thought it was cool. It would assist in breaking habits of making things to easy perhaps. Yes I'd like to see it engraved and maybe some cool colors. A good wild card would be to get the munitions pin set perhaps.

You were talking about pins alot in this video, do you have a video that goes into detail the different pins, how they work and affect a lock and what to expect when picking then? I've watched a few videos you have done and I'm interested in starting to learn.

Great idea to switch things up! I'll try the same thing with a standard dice and assign pins to certain numbers, but having it with custom dice faces would be great :) Won't be surprised to see this in the Sparrows "New Stuff" section in a couple weeks :p

"If you like it..." Like it? LIKE? Wrong word. I think "love" is the right word. I'm an old roleplayer/boardgamer and been picking locks for a while. So this would be a perfect addition to all the other weird and fun dice in my bag, and I really do like the idea of making a random lock. I tend to grab the locks I can already open. This way I'd force myself to pick something I'm not sure I could open. Fun AND good practice. Where do I pre-order? (Only half-joking here. I would pre-order if you wasn't sure you'd like to spend a lot of money and end up with thousands of dice in your closet ;)

Interesting idea! Maybe have an additional die (for those a bit more confident and adventurous) to randomly select the key pin length (might get a bit more involved by having to be able to determine the lengths of key pins in the kit, but may be interesting to at least entertain the possibility).

You could roll the standard dice twice, once for which pin stack, and then a second time to choose the pin size

I really like the idea it reminds me of the old "skate dice" i had when i was younger (same principle but for skateboarding/rollerblading tricks)

I think if you tile the lock noob symbol we should add an munition pin, Scrooge pin, or even a check pin. Just saying, they are fabulously designed and can be bought at sparrows but I bet you knew that!! 😂

I like the die for randomness, there are dice of different numbers 3-20 and a coin could serve as 2 sides, you could make a game set and include rule cards and different dice and have the options in the different games. I.E. “Top pins”, “top pins and chambers”, “top pins, chambers, and key pins”, an 8 or 10 sided die could set the key pin length. The set would be a store add-on for about $5, $6 with your Logo die?

It’d be cool to see sparrows add this to their reload! when I started picking I got a repinable sparrows lock and they threw in a set of chess/checkers pins, would have, hell still could have; fun with those games

I liked the idea that if it come up with the logo you take a shot! Can the die be made with the logo on 5 sides? lol. Should we start checking Sparrows for this die?

I’m started try learn those oval cylinders that is to hard for me to pick. It’s already hex screws over each chamber, so I just removed them all an put them in order in a plastic case, started with 2 pins. I’m stuck now with 4 of 6 chambers populated. It’s a Alfa core so feels simulare to ASSA. If/when I master to pick that one I might thinking of mixing other security pinns. This lock core just don’t communicate good during picking for me yet, or more likely I’m not knowing what to listen for yet 😂

I like the idea but if it's not going to be sold as a package with the pins you need, the die on its own has very little value to me. Now sell it as a kit 5 dice with pins and springs for 10 euros I would bite!
