John Locke’s (1632-1704) political philosophy can be found in his 1690 work entitled Two Treatises on Government.
It was developed during a time of political upheaval in England.
Those in favor of a democratic government with a Protestant throne were trying to overthrow a Catholic absolute monarchy.
As such, most of Locke’s ideas about politics were actually a summary and elaboration of many of the prevailing political sentiments of his time.
In this video, we will discuss the main ideas of Locke's political philosophy, namely the state of nature, natural law and human rights, the social contract, and the limits of government.
