Locke - The Moral Of The Story (Film Analysis)

Watching an 80-minute car ride does not sound like a compelling time at the movies. But Locke, directed by Steven Knight, proves that if you're story is built around an intriguing character, the plot need not be explosive. Tom Hardy gives a career-best performance as Ivan Locke, a man trapped in an excruciating situation that he decides to face head on. In this analysis, I explore Ivan Locke's eventful night on the road and what we can learn from it.

You're absolutely right man. I just saw that movie and it is amazing how a movie of a man in a car for 90 minutes can be so interesting. Good performance of Tom Hardy!

Wonderful wonderful performance from hardy. I think I read that there was some problem with the “low fuel” warning in the bmw which meant every time he heard the beeping and the phone went, his exasperated reaction is very very real. Loved this piece of drama.

It’s incredible how a one person movie conducted in a car by a Welsh concreter walking off a huge moment in his job can be so mind blowing … it shows Tom’s method acting magnificence … lockes a good man and lost everything in the journey
@antondelacruz9362

Dude your analysis left out the suggested ambiguity in lockes character - that his strong morals can go a bit too far because he isnt a good guy for she sake of it, but because he is driven by his desire to show he is better than his dad was. He couldve had someone else join bethan despite her fragility, and he risked the whole pour, and with it his coworkers livelihood and the safety of the building to be built, with his impulsive decision to leave for the hospital. But his one great motive wasnt to be kind to bethan or to do the right thing, but to not treat his baby as he had been treated by his dad. You can also hear it in his weird affection for his work, which even his wife alludes to, calling into question whether he even loves her that much or if he just loves the idea of being a good family man while building a career his dad never couldve.
@nicolemalone9256

I think another detail that shows this is when his wife talks bout the fact he tracks concrete through the house every day which she has to clean up. He seems to care only about his own principals and nothing else
@charlesconfino165
@charlesconfino165 2 года назад
That’s a solid explanation of his morals. If I was in his shoes I would have stayed at the job and lied to my wife about the baby. Maybe request off to be with the baby after the important pour was completed. But that’s because I was thinking about how much grief telling the truth would have caused his family and his coworkers. Maybe he cares more about petty revenge against his dad than anything else

@@charlesconfino165 yes, i agree. And he only realizes it at the end, where he seems to realize that he has failed his family for selfish reasons. As a construction worker who was abandoned by his father at a young age & now I have kids of my own this movie spoke to me a lot. I don’t know Hardy’s background too much but he sure did a good job at portraying a man just like me if I was ever put in this position. Can’t believe he wasn’t at the very least nominated for an Academy Award for this it outdid everything that came out in that 2012/13 Oscars cycle.

Locke did the morally “right” thing and I can respect why he did but my opinion is that lying is not only justified but sometimes necessary to navigate our complicated lives. What really resonated with me was when his coworker said “why didn’t you just say you were sick or something.” Some may have understood the reason why he left before finishing a huge project at work but generally employers will never empathize with the employee. Thus it is not only justified but it is was necessary for him keeping his job. Lying to his wife may have been morally corrupt but it could have at least potentially saved his marriage and spared his family from grief. Locke was not a serial cheater. He made one mistake, and sometimes it is unfair but we suffer our entire lives because of it. There were plenty of ways Locke could have went about this situation. I understood why he wanted to be there for the birth of his child, but in my opinion I don’t think it was vital that he had to be present for the birth. Perhaps he could have waiting until the important delivery and made a request to take a brief leave of absence afterward to be with the child. Maybe his wife would have found out eventually about the baby anyway. Locke’s actions in the film were honorable and morally correct, but in a practical sense he caused a net negative to not only his coworkers but to his family as well.

Two comments. First, in some respects, this movie reminded me of Redbelt. Redbelt starred Chiwetel Ejiofor, and depicted the trials and tribulations of a righteous and honest man who was beset on all sides by evil, malevolence, deceit, and dishonesty. He made the right choices and he did the right things at every fork in the road and at the end of the movie, he was richly rewarded for it. Locke seems to depict an alternate path where a righteous and honest man slips and falls just once. He makes a bad choice, and he loses everything. These two movies together demonstrate that it is exceedingly difficult to build, and it is horrifyingly easy to destroy. Second, while I very much appreciated your analysis and while I think it was perfectly spot on, I think it was incomplete. I think you overlooked the most shocking irony of the film. At the intersection, Locke switches his blinker from left to right and in that moment he decides to place everything that he values and holds precious at risk so that he could be present for the birth of his child. Despite his efforts to make matters right with his wife, she throws him out of her life. Despite his efforts to make things right with the concrete pour, he loses his job. His wife and his job were precious to him, yet he was willing to place both of those things at risk so that he could be there when his child was born. At the end of the movie, however, his child is born without him being there and despite the drama surrounding his lover‘s labor and delivery, it was a successful delivery resulting in a healthy child demonstrating that he did not actually need to be there at all. In the end, he forfeited everything that was precious to him for naught. In an effort to slavishly and rigidly follow the path of righteousness, he turned his back on his two most crucial obligations for the sake of honoring a perceived obligation to a third person he had no real connection to, and in the end, this decision was entirely unnecessary, meaning that he lost everything for nothing. This certainly calls into question the wisdom of heroically and sanctimoniously following the truthful and moral path. Building on this last point, perhaps the ultimate irony here is that he was simply mistaken about what “the right thing to do“ actually was. He was, to some extent, blinded by his rage for his father for abandoning him in his childhood. In the grand scheme of things, his father’s abandonment actually worked out quite well. Ivan Locke had a wonderful life with a wife who loved him and children who adored him and a job where he was highly valued and highly respected and that he found highly fulfilling. By every measure, he was a success and his life was ideal. And he threw all that away because of the rage he felt stemming from his father’s abandonment and his (perhaps) mistaken belief that abandoning a child was per se wrong. In this instance, as demonstrated above, abandoning his new child, at least at the moment of birth, would have been so much better for all parties involved. This was obviously a case of “the right thing” actually being the wrong thing and the party making “the right choice” simply being misguided or blinded by hate.

I think most people misread it. This is about a person having a "daddy issue" who abandoned his child (his monologues with imaginary dad). All the wiser, logical and rational suggestions people are making in comments doesn't apply because the moment he heard he caused another human being like him (his child) to exist, he lost it and immediately got into a flight mode to "save" this child ultimately saving his own insecurity (to "fix" everything) so much so he couldn't see the reality he's distorting (family & work) inadvertently loosing everything.
@JoshuaAvery-n7j

Agree with the value of telling the truth. That said, he should have waited to tell his wife in person, at least, not over the phone. Also, his decision to be present at the birth isn't a rational one. It's driven by hatred of his father, and a desire to prove his superiority to that father. He could have missed the birth and still found a way to support the child later. He invested enormous symbolism in being physically present, projecting his own sense of deprivation from his childhood. He talked as though the baby would have a happier memory of its birth with him present, which shows he isn't actually being clearheaded on this point. On another point: It looks implied at the end that he is about to join up with a new family, by the necessity of his wife's rejection. Great film. Great for discussion.

This was so helpful and awesome. As Tom Hardy is one, if not my favorite actors of this decade. I didn't understand the true message behind the movie. I found it so hard to follow and understand & I think in part that was due to the accent he portraits throughout the film, but moreover, I didn't watch the beginning as closely and as soundly as I should have... But this explanation & expression was exactly what I needed. Thanks for the great explanation & keep up this sort of talented work. Definitely deserves a lot more gratitude than most will give. And as you said. I couldn't agree more. For most of us, it's so much easier to tell a lie than to just straight out tell the truth, and though it may seem easy to tell the truth, no matter the situation, until you're truly faced with something like this, something obviously fully life changing and life altering. You cannot tell yourself that you would be able to do what Tom Hardy did in this film, portraying the character of Ivan Locke. I'm going to have to watch this again now knowing the true message of the movie and really pay more attention to the beginning & make sure I watch it through with the understanding that he is having a child with another woman & is choosing the right path, the path of truth, rather than the path of lies & deceptions. Thanks again! I'm going to watch more of your videos! They're truly informative! And definitely help a person like myself better understand the true meaning / message behind a movie vs just watching it and thinking I know what's happening.

You know these situations when something randomly crosses your mind and you wanna know more about it? Kinda happened to me. This movie popped back in my mind a few days ago for no reason whatsoever. I barely heard of it before and the only thing I knew about it was it's basically just Tom Hardy in his car. So i did a little research, found out it was pretty well received and decided: "You know what, might as well watch it." Holy Sh*t, was it a ride. Psychological dramas aren't for everyone (usually not a fan myself), understandably. And only having one actor on screen in the same location for an hour and a half is quite a huge gamble, but damn if Hardy didn't pull it off. It's an actor's job to make scenes feel real, and that performance hit hard. Honestly still don't know how to feel about it. Good summarization btw.

So praiseworthy. I don't get why this movie is so praised, why his character is so praiseworthy for honesty when the whole movie wouldn't be a thing had he yknow been honest to his already family. I don't even see any reviews saying that bethan was an unlikable character and while she's minimal and we don't see her, she was the driving force behind all of these decisions so her character deserves to be judged much harder than anyone has been doing.
