Being a non-magical half-blood makes you a squiggle.

I know you don’t exactly take requests, especially from non-patrons, but you should do a J vs Ben British or Wizard quiz. Where you’re given different names, foods, and customs and you have to determine whether it’s exclusive to the wizard world, or normal for British people. (Also you wouldn’t have to do a normal J vs Ben format)

One of Lockheart’s best lines, “and five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award but I don’t talk about that. I didn’t get rid of the Bandon Banshee by smiling at her!” -CoS But that smile is totally how he was able to pull it all off!

I wouldn’t call that a theory. I thought it was PRETTY OBVIOUS

As much as i love all the "squiggle" comments, i do have an actual theory. I think they can be either! There is a difference after all. Squibs can see the magical world! So in a half-blood family... one child might be a witch/wizard, one might be able to see the magical world, and one might be a pure muggle, not being able to interract with magic at all. That’s my thinking

I think there’s an interesting parallel to be made between Lockhart and Voldemort They both viewed themselves as special because of their Magic, but when they went to Hogwarts and saw they really weren’t the only ones? Lockhart saw all these magical people and thought “fake-it-till-you-make-it!” Voldemort, on the other hand, thought “I’ll be the best”

Weird to think that if Lockhart hadn't obliviated Quirrell, then Quirrell might never have gone looking for Voldemort in the first place (having already received recognition for his work with the trolls). Also Lockhart would have made a good reporter. He had a way with finding wizards who were unrecognized for their great feats, and writing about those feats in an engaging way.

I've just realised it's quite ironic that Voldermort cursed the defence against the dark arts position because that meant he garentueed his own failure in the first book as Quirrell was cursed by voldy

This was always in my head-cannon. I just figured that was why quirrel turned. Because Lockheart got to him, left him a memory- less wizard who happened to be right around Voldemort’s incorporeal form and was prime real estate to be possessed having been wiped.

Both Ravenclaws too, which could make it even more likely that they were acquainted in some way at some point, making it easier for Lockhart to know of Quirrel's travels and to get in contact with him. Edit: According to their Date of Births on the HP Wiki, they probably would have attended Hogwarts as Ravenclaws at the same time, albeit a couple of years apart, so likely would have seen each other in their Common Room at least once.

It's likely a lot of Irish wizards fear banshees. They're about the most famous Irish monster.

Id thata true, than Lockhart is part of the reason that Quirrel gave in and followed Voldemort. He felt he wasn't recognized, felt he could and should be more. Lockhart took from Quirrel some accomplishments that would have helped with that feeling of not being god enough.

Makes sense why Dumbledore would have hired Lockhart the year after too. Probably Quirrell’s time at the school gave Dumbledore the evidence he needed to confirm his theory about Lockhart.

I would have loved it if, at the final battle he would have appeared and turned the battle in the good guys favor. He would have read all his books and believed them and actually became the man he pretended to be.

Oh my wand, this might go even deeper. Lockhart caused Voldy almost coming back in year one. Quirrell was accomplished in defense against dark arts, told his stories to Lockhart who stole the stories and erased his memories. Because of now Quirell didn't remember what he had done he felt he needed to proof his worth so he ventured to forest of Albania to defeat Voldy-baldy. Thus causing the old snake-nose to posses Quirrell, now giving him entry to the school and to the Philosopher's stone. Worst part of this? Lockheart didn't even mean to do it. All the ignorant fool wanted was steal some fame. If he at least was malevolent you could somewhat understand it. Maybe reason Dumbledore hire Lockhart wasn't (just) to show Harry dangers of fame and arrogance but because he knew the position of DADA was jinxed he wished it to punish Lockhart for what he had done.

The Seamus thing only works if mermaids do, in fact, sound enough like banshees that they are virtually indistinguishable, because we know it was actually a mermaid's voice coming from the egg. He could have just been associating any scream with the famous sound of a banshee without ever actually experiencing a real banshee (his fear could stem from stories about them).

You know what I would absolutely like to see? A video discussing what exactly it is that makes a magical creature magical. Were trolls created at some point by some ancient wizard? Are they genetically related to humans but had some magical event in their evolutionary history? And, perhaps even more importantly: *why* aren't muggles able to see magical things? Has it always been this way? Was there some grand spell cast long ago to make it so? So many questions!

I remember Harry Potter Theory making a video like this a couple years back. He mentioned that Quirrell and Lockhart met while Quirrell was in the same forest Voldemort was in, looking for Voldemort. Once Lockhart found out about Quirrell’s plan, he modified Quirrell’s memories and plans, thus making him easy prey for the dark lord himself.

I posted this up in a few places a couple of years ago, great to see my favourite HP theorists picking it up too! "Hagrid says that Quirrell "met vampires in the Black Forest, and there was a nasty bit o' trouble with a hag - never been the same since". I think, rather than the Voldemort connection, it would be interesting if Lockhart took credit for one or both of these occurences for his books Voyages with Vampires or Holidays with Hags but it was the memory charm that changed Quirrell."

A Squib is defined as someone not having magic while having one or both parents being magical. So Lockhart's sisters would be Squibs, because of their mother being magical.

3:02 The magic gene is obviously a dominant gene so I think that any one with magical parent(s) without magical abilities, has a defect which is a squib. But Muggles don’t have defects they just don’t have that at all.

I love how we all joke about Lockhart and almost think of him as adorable, but when you stop and think about it, what he does is actually EXTREMELY TERRIFYING

I absolutely love watching your theories and seeing what stuff you come up with, even if it's not always totally accurate or believable, however I'm unsure about this one just because first of all and correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't read the book in a long time, but I'm pretty sure the only one memory charm that Lockhart uses constantly is the obviate spell, which not only erases small sections of your memory but also your entire sense of self altogether, this is the spell that he intends to use on Harry and Ron in the film, which ends up backfiring and causing him to be in Saint Mungo hospital for the rest of his life as there is no cure and he has no recollection of who he is, since this is the spell we know he likes to use and is the spell that he says he's used on multiple witches and wizards or else they would've gone blabbing which they didn't because he erase their memory and he doesn't erase their memory of that use for his books but he also erases the memory altogether so that they don't go blabbing telling other witches and wizards that he erased their memory, he literally makes them go crazy with that spell with no sense of self and no idea who they are, so again considering the fact that quarrel, as far as we can tell clearly still has his sense of self and, aside from being a little more evil and a little more confident thanks to Voldemort, does seem to be for the most part the same as he's always been, with clearly a very strong sense of who he is, which again would not be the case if Lockhart had used that memory erase spell on him, again there may be something I'm missing as I only just started watching this video, so maybe my questions and concerns get brought up later on, but again please let me know how this is possible does he use multiple others like the one that Hermione uses on her parents to change their memories or is it just the one spell, because again it's very clear that quarrel hasn't gone mad and seems to be for the most part the same both before and after he meets Voldemort, so again please let me know if there's something I'm overlooking or that I just don't remember from the book, maybe he does know multiple charms, I know that is the main spell he likes to use though so again just let me know if I'm missing something.

I have one question though are the memory charms that he uses excessively powerful like he ends up permanently in st mungos and doesn't remember his name... How does quirrel remain mostly functional as a human being if so ? Unless it's just accidentally that strong due to Ron's faulty wand ?

I think the most interesting would be Sokka and Zuko. 3: What if Prim became the Mockingjay? The only way I see this happening is if Katniss gets caught hunting and either gets killed or sent to the Capital and becomes an avox, a year or two before Prims game so she gets some survival skills not as good as Katniss but better than nothing.

I know that this is not relevant to the video, but I have a theory that Snape actually put a taboo on Sectumsempra so when harry used it Snape knew that it happened not that Snape is a vampire

Off on a complete tangent: In Philosopher's Stone, Draco goes out of his way to introduce himself to Harry and try to bring him into his circle of friends. Harry rebuffs him and that may be WHY Draco is mean to Harry from then on. But is the REASON Draco made the offer because his father (knowing Harry was a threat to Voldemort's return) had pushed Draco to try and bring Harry over to the dark side. And is that why Draco is always saying, 'my father will hear of this.'

Have you ever wondered about Quirrell's turban why is he covering also sides of his head? Would it be possible that Voldemort can move 180° and somebody approaching the professor and giving a little cheek peck kiss landed squarely in He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named lips?

with the mention of Lockhart and Quirrel's similar backstories and a non-magic-capable halfblood being a squib or not in mind, one thing i've wondered is if squibs can actually attend and graduate from Hogwarts or other wizarding schools. i know that there was apparently one canonical case where one got to the Sorting and was rejected, but how standard even is that? (i have an idea for a crossover where the original literary Dr. Jekyll was a squib who excelled at Potions ;))

I was a little worried when I heard this come up in TTGD, since you've typically managed to post theories _before_ the brainstorming that created them. I'm glad to see this one still warranted a full video, I was really hoping to see what all evidence you could add onto the pile with a deeper dive :D

I had a dream where in the Great Hall I gifted Quirrell an infinity scarf that's a little tight, just so he'd have to remove the turban to see if it fits (since it's explicitly not for religious purposes). He comes up with a weak excuse, like his neck's chronically warm. I ask Snape beside him "Oh _deer,_ oh _deer!_ Is there any cure for that? Perhaps a crushed Lily?"

I would think if one of your parents is magical and one of their parents is magical, then you are in a magical family but didn't inherit it, therefore a squib. Otherwise, just muggle.

Umbridge's way of thinking may be _extremely_ corrupt, but at the end of the day, she _is_ still working off of a... _kind_ of "for the greater good" mentality. (And before anyone calls me an Umbridge defender, she is not only easily my least favorite character in the series, but one of my least favorite characters in all of fiction). Lockhart, on the other hand, only cares about himself and his own fame and glory, no matter how many people have to suffer for him to get it.

Honestly, I've wondered why Dumbledore even hired Professor Qurell? He seemed pretty pathetic as a teacher. But most considered, Dumbledore hired him because he knew about Voldemort. Now, I do believe Dumbledore hired Lockhart because he figured out Lockhart because he knew the REAL wizards who did certain things that Lockhart took credit for. And I can easily say Dumbledore counted on Voldemort's curse on the defense against the dark arts position. We know Dumbledore understood how the curse worked but didn't know how to break it. Because it was in the diadem horcrux hidden in the room of requirement.

I hope that you'll do some theories about Inside Out 2. I'm very excited to see the movie tonight.

I definitely feel like the term "squib" applies to someone with otherwise pure blood status that just drew the short straw on the cosmic lottery. I.E. 2 magical parents and no magic themselves. But if you're like Seamus and you're half and half and come up Muggle that's not so far outside of what's to be expected as to be given the name "squib"

3:01 I think a Squib is anyone with, if we use the line from Fantastic Beasts, "magical ancestry but no power," so someone with a direct magical parent is a Squib, not a Muggle.

I hate to say I really don’t see this as being the case. Quirrell is a pretty extreme coward. I don’t really see him being able to do something valiant enough to end up in a book when coming face to face with vampires. Also there were mountains near the school as described of the view of Ravenclaw students from their common room.

Seeing this theory develop in real time on Through the Griffin Door was so fun! Keep it up guys ❤

So if you're a non-magical half-blood and you cannot see magic, you're a Muggle. And if you're a non-magical half-blood and you can see magic, you're a Squib. ... The real question is - if it's possible for two muggles to produce a fully magical child ("a muggle-born wizard"), then, is it also possible for two muggle parrents to produce a partially magical child - a Muggle-Born Squib?

I have a theory that I would like to share with you. I noticed that the 7 Horcruxes of Voldemort varied in strength. The diary for example was the strongest, it was almost able to create a second version of young Tom Riddle, but the Horcrux in Harry was the weakest, as this one couldn't poison the soul of Harry or anyone else. But it kind of makes sense in my opinion, because the diary, the first Horcrux, was created with half of of Voldemort's soul and Harry, the 7th and final Horcrux, was created with 1/128, or 1/(2^7), of Voldemort's soul. So I think there is a limit to how many Horcruxes someone can technically create.

Could I ask for a favor? The content of your videos can be interesting. BUT... Could you please, PLEASE, go a little easier on the tone and volume with which you speak? Years ago, when you were younger, it worked just fine. Now? At least in my case -and I'd bet with a number of others- not so much. Your content/ theories/ etc. might be a little easier to pay attention to, and less liable to be left unwatched after a minute from the beginning if you spoke in a normal tone of voice. And not as if you drank a big amount of Red Bull or something... Just saying.

Y'know it's pretty sad because if Lockhart had only taken the honest route and wrote stories about those escapades while giving credit to the real heroes, he could have been revered by EVERYONE as a handsome, charming, and brilliant author - a discoverer of talents, a herald of heroism. If you're noticed by Gilderoy Lockhart...if THE Lockhart wants to write about you, you've truly made it. He could have also written about his own heroic endeavors. Say, perhaps, he used his talents for memory charms to mend the minds of those suffering from PTSD by carefully erasing the horrors they'd seen. Maybe he could have even developed ways of bringing back people whose minds had been broken - say, the Longbottoms? If he'd taken the honest route, could he have helped them? He could have even worked in the ministry, dealing with muggles who've found out the truth. Ultimately, he could have been imperative to the Second Wizarding War, messing with the memories of Voldemort's followers. Instead, what could have been priceless magical talent that could have saved many lives and a beautiful showcase of great wizards and witches of the age was wasted because of his greed.

Imagine if they’ve met after quirell found his big bold friend… lockheart would have accidentally defeated THE DARK LORD! but would not have known about it… and couldn’t take credit for it… but basically that would have been the end Diary riddle might have came back though, but we know that it probably would not have happened cos … Harry And the original one - would be just … wiped.. with no recollection on where are his “anchors to life”…and they wouldn’t even help him… he would be not just less then a ghost He would be less then a ghost with no understanding of who he is and immortal…

This is unrelated to the video (which is a great one) but we always talk about THE elder wand or THE ressurection stone, when mad eye moody is looking for ONE of his SPARE invisibility cloaks. Just kinda weird. I know Harry/James’ one is the original but still.

Even though Lupin is unlikely to be the wizard from Wonderings with Werwolves he might have known him possibly through Dumbledore. Think about it if you want to research Wear-wolves who would you go to. Another one of Lockharts possible victims might be Hagrid, think of how absentminded he is, I am not saying he is one of the wizards whose accomplishments he stole, but 😅perhaps he witnessed something, being half giant it didn’t effect him as greatly, I am thinking about Bertha Jorkens from Goblet.

For the squib vs muggle debate, my thinking is that there is zero difference between the two. I think a squib is the functional equivalent of a muggle, so what you call the non-magical child of a single magical parent is more a cultural/linguistic question. Arguably they’re a squib since they are a non-magical child of a magical parent (at least I can imagine the magical parent feeling that the relationship they had to their child was like that of a wizard parent to a squib child). But, assuming the family lives in the muggle world primarily, that child’s experience would be that of any other muggle existing in a society that viewed them as completely normal and not in anyway an outcast due to lack of magical ability. There’s also the consideration that the statute of secrecy doesn’t apply to traditional squibs, but, if a wizard marries a muggle, they cannot reveal the magical world to their family unless a magical child is born. If the only children in the family are non-magical, then the statute of secrecy would still apply. This implies that the gov’t considers non-magical kids born to at least one muggle parent while living primarily in the muggle world to be muggles. (But, maybe, if the muggle father died while the witch mother was still pregnant and the mother then moved back to the wizarding world to give birth and raised that non-magical child in the wizarding world, it would THEN be considered a squib…) TLDR: depends on the context? 🤷‍♂️

For the question about whether a non-magical person born to one magical parent and one Muggle parent: that's an interesting question. To me, it seems like the books imply incredibly heavily that magical blood almost always propagates to the children, and cases where it doesn't are anomalies, hence the term "Squib" to denote such anomalies. But I can't think of anywhere that such heredity rules are explicitly stated. On the other hand, if Lockhart had TWO sisters, neither of whom are magical, that's a pretty unlikely coincidence. While one-in-a-million events do occur, its occurrence does lead me to doubt this a bit. So while I'm not entirely certain, if you forced me to pick one or the other, I'd say they're probably Squibs.

Someone born to a one magical parent and one non-magical parent, and not being able to perform magic would still be called a Squib. In the story of Ilvermorny, Isolt is obviously a witch, and her husband James is a muggle. One of their two twin daughters, Martha, is described as being a Squib who went on to marry someone from the Pocomtuc tribe and live out her days as a No-Maj (dumb nickname).

What if when Lockhart erased Quirrell's memory, he erased too much and that's why Voldemort is able to use Quirrell. I do think Lockhart only erased what he needed, but if he has an affinity for trolls i assume if you erase all his knowledge for trolls he would be lost. "how can Quirrell still be good with trolls if he lost all memory". I don't think memory loss is as permanent as people think it is in the story. Dolahoffs memory is erased and he becomes himself if im not mistaken. (havent read 7 in a while). Actually scrap that. If Lockhart only erased Quirrell's journey and what he did with the trolls he would still be lost. He would be awoken in the middle of Norway. Not knowing why he's there. I feel like something like that has to be the reason Quirrell came to voldemorts aid. Voldemort must have given him purpose. That could also explain his stammering and general cowardness. (i know Voldemort is the more canon reason) but i feel like someone as gifted as what Quirrell seems to have been can't willingly portray himself as a coward and it would just make him a second Peter Pettergrew. Even if he knows why he's in Norway he could especially feel like a failure since someone did his quest before him and idk know Quirrell's and Lockhart's age, but if they are of similar age. Quirrell Would know Lockhart as that confident idiot from school who can't do magic and he bested him. I'm pretty certain aswell of a real life expiriment where they gave a maze to people with dementia and timed them. And even though they had no recollection of the maze they solved it faster everytime. That could be Quirrels Troll knowledge. Sorry for the messy comment, but its just a brainstorm.

I still think it's possible Lockhart stole non-werewolf related stories from Lupin. It's clear from his classes that he knows a lot about magical creatures and how to defend against them. I have a headcanon that he does a lot of odd jobs which are basically magical pest control, since we know he has the expertise and struggles to keep a steady job due to lycanthropy. Maybe he was the source of Gadding with Ghouls, or gave Lockhart information and anecdotes for Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests. If you look at the chamber of secrets video game however, there's another Lockhart title which I think we can all agree fits Lupin perfectly... Marauding with Monsters.

If Lockhart wasn’t a self-absorbed narcissist, he actually could have been an excellent spy. He was extremely good at gathering intelligence on people that wasn’t already widely known and getting them to divulge information and also covering his tracks while doing it. The fact he could do this without anyone but maybe Dumbledore catching on even after he was famous suggests he’s top tier at general subterfuge. Like honestly, how was he discovering that these individuals had accomplished such amazing achievements before such achievements became generally known??? That demonstrates an amazing ability to investigate, a skill that isn’t, strictly speaking, magical, but one that’s invaluable.

What if on his journey to make a name for himself while looking for Voldemort his biggest target Quirrell runs into Lockhart in Norway where Lochart gets the story from him, wipes his memory and out of shear dumb luck Quirrel in his stupefied state runs stumbles upon his final target and rather than remembering his objective ends up forming a contract with him instead? Then now being more competent with Voldemort behind him, they take one of the trolls back to Hogwarts and apply for the Defense Against The Dark Arts position? Would explain why Quirrell was dumb enough to make a deal with Voldemort, how Lockhart got his story, and how we ended up here.

I'm reading Goblet of Fire and started to wonder if Barty Crouch Jr. Could feel the dark mark while disguised as Moody. It would be visible, but would he still feel it? When harry changes in his second year, his eyesight is better because Crabb or Goyle, whichever has better eyesight so would the mark and the pain it brings disappear when Crouch is Moody? And if someone changed into Crouch, or any Death Eater would they then have the dark mark and be able to feel it burn?

I've just realised, if this theory automatically makes Quirrell a more qualified wizard than Lockhart ever was or would be, if he got his memory wiped and then turned to the evil side because of getting possessed by Lord Voldemort because of Lockhart, would that still not modify his ranking of yours as a bad DADA teacher but above Lockhart? Umbridge is at the bottom and most fans can agree there just for how intentionally horrible she was at not wanting to teach them anything useful and lie to them about everything before turning Hogwarts upside down. But now that this theory reveals just how detestable of a narcissist Lockhart really was with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, Quirrell while also not being competent as a teacher due to his stuttering persona and we don't even get to see him give a proper lecture in the first film, so we don't get to see an actual lecture of that subject till the second film, had to have been better than Lockhart who literally could not teach anything. Umbridge's approach might have been only theoretical but it was at least some content, only for the students to fail both academically and in the magic world as a whole until Harry stepped up. Lockhart didn't even encourage that. Quirrell's methods of teaching are the most unexplored in the series as far as DADA teachers go but I think that still makes Quirrell rightfully n°4 on the DADA list of worst to best with Umbridge still at the bottom, Lockhart at n°5 because he at least did teach a valuable lesson, "Don't be fooled by appearances", not just in regards to his whole charm and fraudulent persona but also his Cornish Pixies who are mocked first by Seamus appear to seem ridiculous but then happen to be rather chaotic to the point he can't even control them because of how incompetent he is.

A muggle is a non-magical person with no knowledge of the wizarding world. A Squib is a non-magical person with knowledge of the wizarding world. So, if they knew their mom was a witch and they possessed no magical ability of their own, I think they would qualify as squibs.

Squib can't use magic, but can see magical things such as dementors. Those half bloods who can't use magic, but can see a Magical Creature, are Squibs, while those Half Bloods who can't use magic, OR see magical creatures, are muggles. That's my understanding anyway.

Do you think voldemort was giving Quirell (terrible) teaching advice? Like "Jimmy just isn't getting any of this." "Just hit him with crucial a couple of times. He'll pick up on our then!"

On the topic of a half-blood magic person being a muggle or a squib if they present as nonmagical, I think it would depend on the blood status of the magical parent. If they themselves are also a half-blood, then I would say muggle. But if they are pure blood, then that would be squib designation. Just my thoughts!

You know. Thinking about this. It makes sense. Because Quirrell encountered vampires and werewolves. And Lockhart somehow has delt with them all. This theory makes really great sense. Great video as Always. The master and apprentice joke is hilarious.😂😁
