C'mon - it was adopted in Germany and a lot of other countries because Lockheed paid the biggest bribes. Not because it was the better choice.

The French Mirage III was not an option for Germany because France would not allow it to be used offensively as a bomber. Sweden had a similar policy. Germany understood all too well, that relying on defense alone only delayed their inevitable defeat, so an interceptor that could also double as a bomber made the F104 the preferred choice.

I was planning to write about Japanese anecdotes, but almost all of them were told. It looks like you've done a good job of researching it. I'm so happy. As an added bonus, the pilot who was awarded a shoot-down from the F-15 became a pilot of aerobatic aircraft after retiring from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and became popular not only in Japan but also in the United States, but in 2005, he was killed in an accident during aerobatic flight training. He has passed away. Japan introduced this aircraft with military aid from the United States in the early stages of its introduction (there was no budget). Later, after the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) retired, the aircraft was returned to the United States and refurbished and used by the Taiwanese Air Force ( Recommissioned into R.O.C.Air Force).

12:00 "the spirit of the time was different" - Indeed. I remember a two ship Luftwaffe F-104G formation flying over my house in Eltham, suburban SE London in about 1965 after, I assume, a display at nearby Biggin Hill. They were at about 250ft and just subsonic. Gone in a flash, the noise was incredible. I doubt they were reprimanded.

Thanks for this video with many interesting facts. As a child, I often saw it flying over my hometown. One of the ex-Turkish Air Force F-104 is still here as a monumental aircraft.

I visit a f-104 from time to time in my local University. What a plane. I was under the impression that J-79 is a bulkier engine, it is not. Nice video as always.

Flying pencil, or the rocket with a pilot inside, or widow maker. A really impressive set of nicknames.

Fun fact, during the India Pakistan war when these were used, India basically had no answer to it. Whenever a F-104 appeared, India fighters had to retreat because they had no way of engaging it with severe losses.

Italy had no big issues with this plane, compared to Germany! I think it was long in service, even until the year 2001 or so!

Germany did underestimate the training and did have far less trouble with the plane once the pilots did receive proper schooling.

400kmh = a crazy VR speed + must’ve ultra smooth runways carefully maintained to avoid FOD. Amazing what a quantum leap Western fighters made during the ‘60. Their ‘50s counterparts were awful in every department except speed.

Any plane can be a 'widow maker' if flown incorrectly.

while mentioning its combat history, you didn't even touch the country which actually used this aircraft in 2 wars against a much larger foe, while having only a single squadron of Starfighters themselves!

Perhaps the worst interceptor ever created, it was too difficult to fly for novice pilots, can't maneuver well even for interception roles and unreliable IR guided missiles(Italians solved this issue later). However, it was less complicated to use in combat and maintain than other interceptors at the time like F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta Dart. F-104 slowly retired from frontline usage once F-4 Phantom entered service and completely withdrawn from service after F-15A entered service.
