A demonstration of various different proven and experimental locomotion methods for HTC Vive virtual reality.
Locomotion is the method of navigating virtual spaces in VR. There are many types of locomotion in VR right now, with different levels of immersion and potential motion sickness. In this video I try out as many locomotion methods as I could find for the HTC Vive virtual reality HMD. I stuck with locomotion methods that don't require any peripherals outside of the HTC Vive motion controllers, so no Virtuix Omni treadmill, flight sticks, racing wheels, or other VR accessories.
Here's a list of the games and locomotion demos I showed in this video:
Spell Fighter VR 0:00
Vanishing Realms 2:11
The Gallery: Call of the Starseed 2:20
Spells 'n' Stuff 2:45
Budget Cuts Demo 3:03
Cosmic Wandering (WalkAbout) 4:08
RIPmotion Demo 5:33
VR Walking Prototype (arm swinging) 6:57
Hallway 8:22
World Rotator 9:42
Skier 10:33
Unseen Diplomacy 11:51
VR zGame 13:31
Paintey 14:27
Windlands 16:32

I was 16 years old when my dad brought home Pong. My brother and I spent many happy hours hitting that white square "ball" back and forth on the TV screen. It amazes me that, in my lifetime, we have gone from that to this!

You really should make adjustable speed so people can walk faster if they dont really experience nausea. right now it looks painfully slow. so slow I wouldnt even want to try playing it. If you release the game and this is going to be how players walk, it is going to be a failure. I really want you to succeed since the game idea itself is pretty rad, really looking forward to it

Very nice overview! As a guy just starting to look into VR development, it was a pretty good way to get a few ideas. One game you kinda missed, but I don't think was out in June 2016 was Lone Echo, which uses its setting to provide a really nice feeling locomotion mechanic. Zero gravity is a great reason baked into the setting to have arm-based locomotion where you push yourself around in the environment. I also seem to be one of the few people who actually doesn't mind the teleportation mechanic, as long as its restricted in some way.
@doncoady1911
@doncoady1911 8 лет назад
Well done. The only thing I might add is a teleportation variation I've seen which toggles scale. For example, in a VR city you make yourself a giant to traverse large distances The zoom and pan mechanic used in map interfaces is another example.

4:16 This kinda makes me think of how the holodeck in StarTrek possibly works. Certain size walking space so the simulation tricks you into thinking your walking forward when you're actually walking in circles or back and forth. But with this tech demo it doesn't do it that complex, but still similar concept.

Likewise. Smooth locomotion is the only option that feels as real as it could get without a infinadeck.
@turtlemop8712
@turtlemop8712 4 года назад
lolol me. I'm not being paid by valve nor do I have the technical know how to actually solve this and yet here I am lol. But with that being said the "armswinger" method in H3VR looks pretty promising. Definitely not perfect, but could be a step in the right direction. You can see someone who seems to be pretty good at it in this video(ignore the index review and watch the gameplay): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pSZzk2dLXgg.html The speed of arm swinging controlling the speed of the player seems to be like a good solution that is also immersive(the linear movement of only using the analog stick makes you feel like a camera just zooming around, whereas the arm swinging introduces a real headbob which makes the movement feel more realistic). I think a traditional button click to switch from a binary walk/run definitely would not work well in VR and would feel too unnatural. The speed control has to be a smooth controllable curve. Maybe the analog stick to control direction plus arm swinging to control speed could work. dunno, I really should be spending my time doing something productive that I actually have agency over...

I would probably add what I kind of think of as step teleportation. Essentially pressing on the pad to move forward instead of smoothly moving forward will just teleport the world the distance of a step or two. As someone who does get VR sickness (it's not actually motion sickness since motion sickness is the opposite cause, the inner ear says you are moving bur your eyes say you are not, commonly something you might get while reading a book in a car, for example) I found it interesting in Technolust early on when he played with that where I would use a smooth artificial locomotion until I would begin to feel that slight twinge of queasiness and then I'd switch to the step teleportation mechanic, even pressing the trigger to "run" making it a very fast stutter step, like watching an old movie, would instantly make the queasiness go away. I would do that for a while and could go back to smooth motion for a while until the feeling came back then I'd just switch back again. Admittedly that method does break immersion somewhat but it worked really well for me. You may have also seen on reddit some mention of a recent study showing that s subtle reduction of FOV wile using artificial locomotion apparently seemed to reduce VR sickness as well. That's not necessarily a locomotion method, of course, so not necessarily relevant to your video. I would also add that, while not are really commercially available just yet, that omni-directional treadmills will be another locomotion method that may prove useful for reducing or eliminating VR sickess as well. That's not necessarily a software locomotion method, mind you, but is an overall locomotion solution for VR that may prove of some use, although it remains to be seen how common any of those may become considering the price point.

Once I can afford my vive (hopefully in a few weeks or so), I'd love trying to implement some horse-riding for moving around. You'd use your arms to hold the bridle of your horse and you could control the movement you your horse by moving your arms. I think that'd be a really good method for moving around longer distances. If you'd combine this with the RIPmotion-method from 5:33 or the VR zGame-method from 13:31 for close-distance movement, I think that you could easily traverse large open-world areas without ever having motionsickness or being thrown out of the illusion. Thanks for the great video!
@Bumble49

Awesome, I'm pleased they are looking for solutions to this, it's one of the reasons I haven't got VR yet (other than gearvr) having to teleport to move was a no go for me. Someday when portable VR is feasible we will be able to just go out to an open field or something and play any game we want and run practically forever, that would be a blast. It would be even cooler if they had big sensors on towers at the corners of the field to locate you, then you could put props in the field that fit the map, fake buildings, etc and have other players join you, kinda like that indoor VR thing but huge scale. VR is going to be nuts in a few years from now I think.

i was gonna chime in gorn, but i'm not sure if it is too similar to the climbing mechanic. you use the grip buttons i believe to sort of crawl forwards and to me it feels sort of like you're just using your hands to walk. later on you get a fun pair of gloves that let you jump high as well if you thrust your arms downwards while the buttons are being pressed.

Great video. Another topic you could cover another day is how locomotion affects multiplayer experiences. Teleportation isn't great for a a game where you are shooting at an opponent. The method you show at the begging of this video, where you have a an animated body walking towards the teleportation target could be a possible solution to a multiplayer fps with teleportation mechanics.
@Bumble49
@Bumble49 8 лет назад
Yeah, multiplayer locomotion is really interesting also. I like how Hover Junkers handles it, one of my favorite locomotion concepts in general. Battle Dome also has an interesting take on teleportation, you have to paint tiles for your team to TP to them, and the enemy can paint over to reclaim them, so it combines teleportation with teamwork and territory control to make it more tactical.

In order for the "hallway" mechanic to be effective, you need a 40'x40' area I believe. At that scale, the turning is imperceptible as far as I know. Ideally you could walk, or even run around. Maybe one day homes will dedicate a whole floor as a holodeck.

Quick question (don't have access to a HMD as of yet so can't answer for myself). As someone who does not get motion sick, what is your personal favorite? What would you like to use in a game like Fallout VR?
@Bumble49
@Bumble49 8 лет назад
My favorite of these methods is RIPmotion, I hope we see more people experimenting around with that method of movement. I definitely don't think it's the end all solution for VR though, I think VR games are gonna have to look at their locomotion solution on a case-be-case basis. My overall favorite method of locomotion in VR is flying in a cockpit with flight sticks, cockpit based games basically solve all the issues of VR. Fallout 4 VR is gonna be a tough nut to crack. None of these solutions seems idea. I feel like they might have to go with a personal vehicle of some sort, but I'm no game dev so I can't really say. Really excited to see what they come up with!
@carsythe
@carsythe 8 лет назад
Oh wow that surprises me. RIPmotion looks pretty exhausting. I think for the E3 demo, Fallout is using teleportation. The personal vehicle idea is interesting, though people might still get sick. I would even be curious to try mixed perspective solutions, 3rd person when moving long distances, 1st person when shooting. I think in the end, they need to offer multiple options and let people decide, and perhaps even change their preferences as they get more used to locomotion. I really like your videos btw, and thats coming from someone who is pretty turned off by youtube lets play videos.

Hey man I have a tip for you. Why dont you try attaching a snap hook on your belt loop so you can feed the vive wire through it. That way the wire will stay behind you because it looks like its getting wrapped around your body.

There is a game for phones and google cardboard that has the best locomotion called Gravity Pull VR. It is better that the RIPmotion demo, 5:34, because uses the up and down movement of your head to move you arround, so you jog in place, it is really responsive and doesnt cause accidental movements by just looking arround.
@mudai_
@mudai_ 7 лет назад
Martin Clementz I think I played that one. I dunno, I don't like it. You can just stand in place and nod your head to walk everywhere. Trackpad locomotion is the best option we currently have, as far as immersion goes. Fret not, for the coming years will grant us neural VR, and all these physical limitations will be abolished.

Ricky Bronze holy shit dude!!! HOW DUMB ARE YOU TO NOD YOUR HEAD, JOG IN PLACE IT SAYS, IT CREATES THE SAME MOVEMENT OF YOUR HEAD UP UN DOWN, ITS THE PRINCIPLE, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG AF!!

Martin Clementz oh woah, take a sec and chill my home dawg Just saying, like you can jog in place like an idiot, or you could just exploit the feature by nodding your head. It's like if you were playing Halo, would you actually crouch in real life while you pressed R3, or would just press R3?

well you got my sub vr deticated channels are really hard to find imo :/. Also i think there porbly is not going to be 1 standard way to move around. Fun thing about vr is they can use diffrent locomotion methods that would suit the game the are making. so like bumble said if you would have a spiderman game you could have the climb mechanics where lets say budgets the teleportation makes sense. its a new field and i really intrested in what people a going to do with it

There is another that you missed called Dash. Go into the Vive dashboard tab and you'll see a panel to the left with a home icon. Click that and it will open up a space. Press the menu btn on controller and select the settings icon. Change teleportation from blink to dash.

No, not all games, but it is becoming more common for devs to add locomotion options where you can select which way you want to move

has anybody tried to tie movement to the headset itself instead of the controllers? So that you could hold down a button to activate movement and move in the direction in which you tilt your head? A bit like artificial locomotion
@Bumble49
@Bumble49 8 лет назад
Dreadhalls uses a method like this. It uses artificial locomotion but moving forwards always moves you in the direction your headset is facing, so you can stand up and move your head to control where you're going. I much prefer that method to traditional artificial locomotion.
@afanofcanta5357
@afanofcanta5357 8 лет назад
Bumble exactly. they could also make it work like WASD so that you can walk backwards and strafe. I'm not a game developer, but I can't think of a more immersive way to experience movement in vr
@Bumble49
@Bumble49 8 лет назад
Yeah that's exactly how Dreadhalls does it and I hope it becomes the standard for artificial locomotion. It still suffers from the issue of potential motion sickness for certain people though

Bear with me, but I've always tried to figure out how the Holo-deck works in Star Trek TNG. I mean, we know that the Holo-deck is a physical volume with boundaries, but for the user it could seem infinite. So, I've always theorized that the computer must be warping the virtual world in perspective to the users point of view so that when they believe they are walking down a straight hallway that in fact they are subtly walking in an arc. So the computer is warping the virtual world in a way to keep the user walking in a large arc to keep them away from the boundaries of the volume. But what I could never figure out is how this would work for multiple users inside the volume experiencing different aspects of the projected world. I mean, you would eventually walk near someone or into them, which in turn would break immersion.. That 4th or 5th demo is using my holo-deck theory to force the user to walk in a arc but appearing to walk straight in the virtual world. =)
@Bumble49
@Bumble49 8 лет назад
Hmm I never considered the locomotion issues of the holodeck before lol One of the advantages of the holodeck over VR is it can create holograms with actual mass, so it could prevent people from running into the wall by placing physical objects and obstacles to guide them away from walls. Also I think the holodeck can simulate the sensation of movement because I remember someone used it go skydiving once, so it probably uses a treadmill effect and moves the environment. It also must be able to send slightly different images to different people to keep them from bumping into each other like you said. Or maybe it's just magic
