Well, in the UK quite recently, some fellows have tuned the whistle of #60532BluePeter to sound like a New Zealand 5-chime, similar in sound to #NSWGR3801.

I have a U.S. locomotive engineer license and am qualifed on steam. When I travelled to Australia to watch my wife compete on one of the U.S. teams during the Sydney Games the only day she was not competing was when 3801 was running their Long Lunch train. How could I possibly pass that up? I even got an invitation to ride the footplate on the way back into Sydney. One of the things that I found awkward was that in the U.S. the engineer sits on the right and the fireman works from the left. I would normally put my back onto the cab in order to throw from right to left into the firebox. With the fireman having to fire from the opposite side I would have had a hard time firing from left to right instead of right to left. Thankfully I just got to watch and enjoy myself

I was lucky enough to be one of 4 apprentices chosen to work on this beautiful beast when she was overhauled at the Eveleigh Carriage Workshops back in the late 60's. I can still remember a constant stream of workers just coming around to look her over as we worked on her. We gave her a full repaint and sent her out looking every bit as good as she does here. Great to see that this Grand old Lady of Australian Steam has been brought back to her former glory and is in service once again! Cheers, Doons

I personally think it be interesting if you guys arranged with Steamrail Victoria for 3801 to make an ambassador trip to Melbourne again now she's back in fine fettle again. Would do good for promotion I'd say, and of course 3801 did it before and did it well, and could do it now if the facilities for effective cooperation between the NSW Railways and the Victorian Railways stand. Just food for thought when the COVID restrictions ease off for 2022. Regards from England, steam buff Samuel Farris.

So great to see 3801 running again. Brought back memories of seeing it hauling the Newcastle Express past Argenton Primary School ( just north of Cockle Creek station) in the 1960s. Always on time and around 11am during recess time. Gee I loved the NSWGR during those times...cups of tea or coffee and sandwiches, or a dixie cup icecream served to your seat on the the Newcastle Express as it barrelled along. 😊😊

The soundtrack from my childhood really, and it meant holidays! Mum and I would catch the steam train from Binnaway to Sydney to see families on the coast, each year, train to Kiama, train to Newcastle, bliss, just bliss. We would settled down for the night in a sleeper with bunks and freshly laundered crisp white sheets and wake for an early morning cuppa as we came into Central. Honestly, it was always amazing and I so appreciate being able to listen and watch and travel back in time. The last time I caught the overnight train (the Mudgee Mail) was in 1967 after my wedding, before flying back to Darwin where I was a student nurse and my whole life was ahead of me. Thanks.

There were certainly a lot of good times to be had on those express trains often hauled by 01 and her sisters. Trains like the south coast daylight, southern highlands express, Riverina express, Newcastle flyer, the Fish and chips and so on, all put country regions within a day or overnight travel from the big smoke.

For various reasons I couldn't get to Sydney for this epic event, but this RU-vid clip viewed from my PC in the comfort of my home makes up well and truly for not being there. My last experience of 3801 was on a Moss Vale round trip back in 2005, doubleheaded with 3830. I look forward to seeing it again next week in the South. I've just watched Pannier P Productions clip of the Transport Heritage 'caravan' travelling south to Albury today. The maker of that clip is a teen railfan and today would have been his first face to face sighting of the green machine. Congratulations to all concerned for a wonderful restoration and for this great production of the launch.

What a satisfying "hobby" it must have been for (presumably) many old blokes otherwise retired and thus keeping themselves occupied. Am very envious. Back around 1994 (guess) my wife and I took our elder daughter and her fiance on a trip on 3801 to Blackheath and back and they were like a couple of kids in Disneyland. I well remember people at level crossings waving, semi-trailers hooting their horns in appreciation - fabulous memory. I remember, too, my aunt putting my brother and I on the Flyer at Ourimbah to return to Sydney around 1950 and when mum collected us at Hornsby she asked "now were you good boys and didn't put your heads out the windows?", "no, we chorused" whereupon she said "then go and look at yourselves in the mirror in the toilets". Poor old Mum.

@spacemarine88

The firebox door being open allows for more secondary airflow, as such the fire doesn't get as hot as it normally would. On this trip the engine is not working hard and had more than enough steam without needing to close the firebox door.

Its nice to see 3801 back in steam again, but if they continue to run the loco under load with the fire hole door wide open all the time, it won't be long before the inner firebox walls will be suffering from stress cracking, from my limited times on the footplate on steam trials in the 1960's that practice was forbidden, as it allows a large amount of cold air being drawn in over the fire which chills the heated inner fire box walls, continual operation will damage the boiler, brick arch or no brick arch, but maybe the old hands back then didn't know what they were doing, by that I mean the loco inspectors, boiler inspectors, who spent their entire life on the footplate or inspecting damaged boilers due to incorrect firing.
@radiation3041

And it dosent even look like the fireman is spreading the coal correctly
@afs5609
@afs5609 Год назад
@@radiation3041 disagree, firing technique is correct for this type of firebox, the coal used is smaller in size than was available back in the 1960's as coal suppliers today don't supply coal for steam locomotives only for power stations, so you have to adjust the firing technique to suit size and type, for example Newcastle steaming coal versus Western coal, that would clinker, blocking the fire grates, the crews would struggle to clear the clinker off the grates, and they would tell you " the more you play around with it the stiffer it gets" thats why they referred to Western coal as "DICK COAL"

@radiation3041 Год назад
Nice to know👍 it would probably be too expensive to make a different size coal only for occasions like this
@afs5609
@afs5609 Год назад
@@radiation3041 CORRECT as the way mining is carried out today is different then seventy years ago, manual versus mechanical, the coal was screened to a certain size back then, today it is crushed to a certain size by the process of wall mining, screened to ensure it meets customer requirements, then washed to removed dust prior to transporting.
