Lumber prices are kind of off the edge of the map around here, and I'm going to need a lot of cedar for a deck build I've been working on, so I decided to mill my own. I've played around with a little miniature Alaskan sawmill from Granberg a few times in the past, but really only just enough to get an idea of what it's about.
For this project I'm going need somewhere between six and ten logs milled up. That may not sound like a lot but with my meager equipment it was quite the undertaking.
In this video I follow the process of slicing a slab from the center of the log, then ripping it into boards, planing it to thickness, and cleaning up the edges. The tricky fun of the all-important first cut will have to wait for a future video. I tried to include it, but until you've seen the later steps, it was just too much to cover all at once.
Also, this portion of the work was all done with my little trooper of a Harbor Freight chainsaw, the 42cc Poulan Pro PR4218. I've got a couple of Farmertec MS361 saws I could have used, but neither is running properly, so it was back to basics. Don't worry though; a chainsaw upgrade is in the works before this project is said-and-done.
