30 is the new dead! At least, that's the case in 1976's Logan's Run, where the future looks like a Disco Mall, Farrah Fawcett lives, Star Trek makes a cameo and there's this bonkers thing called Carousel.

More About Logan's Run: Logan's Run is a novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. Published in 1967, the novel depicts a dystopic ageist future society in which both population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by requiring the death of everyone reaching the age of 21. The story follows the actions of Logan, a Sandman charged with enforcing the rule, as he tracks down and kills citizens who "run" from society's lethal demand-only to end up "running" himself.

I think you got the movie synopsis a bit wrong. Logan didn't actually become disenfranchised with the society. He was actually one of it's biggest proponents being a sandman. He was actually sent on a secret mission to root out a runner network that was concealing runners within the society. As a consequence, his crystal was artificially accelerated so he could pose as a runner. He then got caught up in the raid on the network, and due to his secret mission, no one else knew that he was not a runner, and probably was by design meant to be expendable. In true humanistic fashion, he did not want to be expendable and found value in his own life. This led to his conversion from a proponent of the society to to an antagonist of it. Also the experiences on the outside that helped him see the truth. Essentially how once one is exposed to Truth, they are forever changed.

@Joel Ellis, Great synopsis and also your closing, everlasting message: Once exposed to unadulterated Truth, everything is forever changed (the way one sees things, thoughts and actions can change when Truth is accepted). That applies every day, every person. Thank you.

I received a ticket to the preview showing of this movie back in 1975 that took place in a movie sound stage located on the remains of the backlot of MGM! Yup, I really did. It was an amazing movie for its' time and when the comment cards were handed out, nearly 100% of the audience wrote down that they really liked the movie. It was unbelievably cool to be on that old backlot. All of the outdoor scenes of the capitol in DC, the streets of the city, even including the reflection pool were all shot on that backlot. They even allowed us to view the miniature model of the indoor city used in the movie. The next year, after the famous MGM auction it was all gone, torn away and condos had already started under construction. It is an experience I will never forget!

When i was a kid, i thought he was unhappy, and then as an adult, i was more able to pickup on things like him turning on his homing beacon at the rebel headquarters. And, then realizing he was actually an infiltrator!

Yeah, in the TV series, Francis meets the "Elders" and they send him off to intercept Logan and Francis. This _should_ have opened Francis' eyes, since the very idea of old people has been stamped in his head from birth as being an abomination. But, he just goes long with it as though it's no big deal. In the movie, Francis' motivation makes a lot more sense.

Agreed, I’ve read all the Logan books and it was 21 and out. I think (but can’t prove) Hollywood used 31 and out because of a greater selection of actors that would be between the ages of 21 and 31 without us having to swallow that some guy with grey in his hair is 21. I didn’t care much for the movie version of the Sandmans gun. My recollection of the book, the sandmans gun looked like a six shooter, each cylinder capable of holding a different round. I have a vague memory of Francis saying to Logan that he liked to shove the barrel into a Runners stomach then fire off a homer round into him.
@madquest8

@jamesooten3659
@jamesooten3659 6 лет назад
Reuven Gayle + This is one of the theories explored in the sequel novels. The party society finds out real quick how pampered they were. Electricity is gone. Meals, drugs, and alcohol appearing at the push of a button are gone. Public transportation and networking are gone. No one lived long enough, so life skills and education were not taught. In the book, that's why the main computer crashed so easily - the people who built the whole network had died and no one was trained to repair it. No one knew how to make anything, they just knew how to use it. After the initial elation wore off, Logan was no longer a hero. He was hated. He was hated even more because he and Jessica actually made it to Sanctuary, which was an old NASA space station orbiting Mars. So while society lived in squalor, Logan was living with technology far away and above the society that he "liberated." He returned after Earth cut the supply lines to Sanctuary. Back on Earth, news of his return spread and roving gangs scoured the countryside looking to kill him and his family for what he'd done. In the series of novels, Logan goes from being a part of the oppressive system, to being a rebel, to being a hero, to being perceived as a villain, only to journey back to being a hero again. It's a dark ride, but so representative of living life. The creator of Logan's Run, William F. Nolan, grew so discontented with how his character was portrayed in the movies, the TV series, and the comics that he stopped all publication of the books. When the books were re-released, all 3 novels were in an omnibus that you could only order from him. Not only that, but you had to write him a letter saying why you wanted the book. My 1st request was denied, but I got it with my 2nd. On the inside of the front cover, was a quote hand-written by Mr. Nolan that I'll never forget: "Logan is a hero of iron, forged in fire, who runs on feet of clay." Priceless!

Originally the cutoff age was 21 but they couldn't get any actor's that looked young enough for that to be believable so they upped the age from the book. They are in the domed cities because they are hiding from the fallout of nuclear war (The Little War) and Sanctuary was an abandoned space colony near Mars, which was changed in the movie but never explained.

I saw this film at the drive in on 17 mile rocks rd. Oxley Brisbane when it 1st came out, I was about 10 - I loved it. Had one of the comics too. I'm not sure how I arrived at this interpretation, but I thought the city and computer had been built originally to protect mankind from a toxic ecco disaster outside and over the ensuing years the outside environment slowly recovered but the computer was unable to comprehend this fact. So the whole premise was ironic, the machine just kept running it;s set up program - to kill people at 30 in an attempt to preserve the species when it no longer needed to. People had been inside so long they had forgotten where their civilization had come from how it had come about in the first place, they had no history, and no concept of what was outside the dome, I took it as a tale of technology gone wrong - technology being a case of two steps forward, three steps back. People had become unwitting slaves to the machine, It's kind of a warning film. With complex AI and robotics being an ever growing aspect of our world it is more relevant today than when it made. Hard to believe no one has remade it yet, seems ripe for a re make.
@jamesooten3659
@jamesooten3659 6 лет назад
Andrew Brittain + That's a very keen summary, better than the original movie and more concise than the book. It's amazing what a child's mind is capable of without any adult input. We understand so much early on, but lose that sense of wonderment as we grow older. Yes, this is long overdue for a re-make, but it can't be just an action flick or a dark gritty dystopian thriller. We've had too many of those. No, the re-make has to be an intellectual thinking man's movie, without losing that edge of rebellion and escape at all costs. Something that leaves you unsettled and bewildered at the same time, and you leave the movie secretly wanting to see it again.

I actually have two pretty great inter-related stories about how I come to see this film after months of trying and failing, leading to seeing it at long last on a double-bill with Annie Hall in a Colorado drive on, AFTER having to accept an industry preview of another sci-fi film in place of LR (which I had been promised!) instead I was taking to see another science-fiction film, which was to win that year‘s Academy Awards for special effects (Logan‘s run won in 1976). That film: Star Wars, which blew my 11-year-old mind, and was doubtless responsible for becoming a director, a job I didn’t really know existed at the time...

Best thing about Logan's Run for me was that I saw it as a double-feature... and the "second" film was 2001. Even though it was almost 10 years old at the time, it was the first time I'd seen it, and on a big screen to boot. Fantastic movie experience! Small quibble with this video - I suppose you can technically say Logan was "disenfranchised by the system"... but it wasn't his choice. He was *assigned* to do his "run" by the computers that ran the City; he was perfectly content living as he was and would presumably have willingly gone to Carousel when his time came naturally. The first thing he asks the computer when his life clock is reprogrammed is if he'll get his time back when he's done with his assignment... only to be met with a noncommittal silence.

I remember watching it when it first came out. So I can understand how Sci-Fi is impacted. I say leave it alone. So many decent Sci-Fi movies/television series have been wrecked by remakes. I have read the books as well, so I do have some idea on the impact of a remake. If they do remake it.. Make it into a full television series, like Handmaids Tale and Westworld. That is the only way I see justice on the orginal.

It's called a Life Clock, not a Time Clock. Flashing red means it's time for Renewal, everyone who is up for Renewal flashes red, as seen in the opening five minutes. Did you even WATCH this movie? The costumes are colored based on AGE... Logan and Jessica do NOT convince the people of the city anything... they are laughed at and arrested. The city blows up and they have no choice but to go outside. It's the Crazy Horse monument, not mountain. "No matter how you spin it, Logan's Run is a true Sci-Fi classic that we couldn't be bothered to do ten minutes of research on, so we have some comments from IMDB and WikiPedia waved them in the direction of the camera just before filming."

Three things every sci-fi fan should know about Logan's Run: 1. It tied for for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in '76 with King Kong 2. At the very end some guy does the Vulcan salute in front of Peter Ustinov's face (thank you for mentioning this) 3. The girl who played Mary 2 went on to be the voice of Penny in Disney's The Rescuers, and the girl who "liked her coffee black" in Airplane!

Grew-up in the 70's and this was played more than once on the "Saturday Matinee" movie features they'd have every week on network TV, when we had 4 channels, including PBS. Stuck with me the rest of my life, pre-Star Wars, along with Space 1999. Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica were kind of silly later on, but I enjoyed them also. Love this whole era of sci-fi.

Read the book. The 1976 film ruined the premise the book was even written for. In the novel, Logan decides to run when he reaches his last day, but his reason for doing so changes over the course of the story. In the film, the computer speeds up his life clock and instructs him to do it. While I still like the film, it's nowhere near as good of a story as the novel.I have no faith that Hollywood would even be interested in making a faithful adaptation of the book in this day and age. At it's heart, it is a social fiction story with futuristic trappings. It's not a mindless action/adventure/science fiction romp.
@serpenthydra
@serpenthydra 6 лет назад
The problem with being faithful is that what works on page doesn't always translate to film. Perhaps these were ideas explored in short lived TV show. That format certainly allows for that kind of arc to exist, although again adaptation is needed to create content beyond the book's perspective... Compromise is a key theme of life it seems...

*Read the book. The 1976 film ruined the premise the book was even written for.* Maybe it's because I saw the movie before I read the book, but in my opinion, this is one of those rare instances where the movie is actually better than the source material. As you read the book you can definitely see the places where they borrowed from it (like some parts of "Box"), but for the most part the movie just took the very basic premise of the book and went in their own direction.

The sequel book, Logan's World. if you can find it, is quite fascinating. Sanctuary is revealed to be a space station orbiting Mars. DS breaks the supply chain forcing the few remaining occupants (basically Logan and family) to return to Earth. The Domed City is only a piece of the worldwide system being run on a version of what we would now see as the Internet but was essentially the defense department supercomputer network headquartered in Crazy Horse mountain.

The tv series never did well in the ratings because CBS never got behind it to promote it. The network would routinely interrupt/pre-empt LR’s time slot by showing some sort of network special or simply move LR to another time slot. A tv series cannot build an audience if it is constantly undergoing scheduling changes. Yes, I realize the show had lackluster writing and character development, but that could have been corrected. CBS simply did not support this show and after 14 episodes…it simply faded into television history.

I've always thought that, in 1976 "Logan's Run" was considered to be the "Mountain of Sci-Fi" - the blockbuster that all others were compared to for its plot and special effects. Then, a year later a little movie called "Star Wars" appeared on the big screen and the "Mountain of Sci-Fi" found itself looking like a grasshopper next to an elephant.

Well one source as I'd heard somewhere is that Logan's Run is America's answer to 1984 & meaning like that book from Britain,of which was maybe 3 or 4 times made into a movie,If it's in the mind that's what makes it hard to bring to the screen and both the Movie & TV screen alike. In The Logan's Run Book Francis is a good guy and is sanctuary but please do read both the book & the Malibu graphics comics alike to see how and without me giving too much away.

The best part of the original Logan's Run story to me, as a kid, (book, not the movie) were the Sandman (DS) Guns themselves. They had, I believe, 6 different ammo types which produced wildly different effects: Homer (heat seeker that fires off all your pain receptors at once... think of STNG's Varon-T disruptor), Tangler (metallic sticky net that shrinkwraps you), Nitro (grenade-like blast), Vapor (gas charges that required you to insert nose filters first), Ripper (close-range armor-shredder), and Needler (knockout drug... too bad that one didn't have an EverLove dose option! Hello, Greygirl...). As a kid, I SO wanted that gun!

To be clear, George Perez has written his own material; but, on Logan's Run, he was just the artist. Gerry Conway wrote the first issue of the comic and David Anthony craft the other 5 issues of the adaptation (which went through issues 1-5, with a new story in issues 6 and 7). Perez was assisted by inker Klaus Janson. Issue 6 also featured a back-up story with Thanos and Drax the Destroyer, who can currently be seen in Avengers: Infinity War.

whoops that was "the other 4 issues". The first 5 issues adapt the movie, while 6 and 7 loosely adapt elements of Logan's World, within the movie's world. Sales were moderate and it was cancelled after the 7 issues.

Jeff Nettleton + There is also an issue of Marvel Fanfare that focused on smaller stories about various characters rather than one issue-long story. My comics are in storage right now and I don't remember the issue number. However, it featured Black Widow, Elektra, Triton from the Inhumans, and a story set in the world of Logan's Run. It focused on another Sandman (not Logan) chasing a runner. It was a surprize because was not on the cover. I guess BW and Elektra were enough of a draw to sell that issue. Good story and art, though.

This is one adaptation that was better off straying from the source. Being killed off at 30 was more believable than being forced to die at 21. The movie age limit takes into account the time it would take to fully educate and train an individual, and still have time to lead the hedonistic lifestyle depicted in the movie. Oh by the way don't bother with snowpiercer, depressing ambiguous endings aren't worth 2 hours of your life. Premise was stupid anyway. Not the fact that current ice age goes through another cold period, but the fact that this particular group survivors didn't migrate to a warmer equatorial region when they had the chance, but instead chose to remain in a northern mountainous area where they would be experiencing the worst of the deep freeze.

Just watched this movie last night on DVD from the library. Logan was a spy for the City computer in order to find and "destroy Sanctuary". There were 1056 runners unaccounted for, and the computer wanted to find out there they were going and destroy it. Turns out they were frozen by Box, but the computer did not know this. There was no sanctuary, and so, when the computer found this out in Logan's interrogation, it self destructed Star Trek style (as when Kirk makes computers blow up by asking logical questions it cannot answer :~) ) Logan winds up falling in love with Jenny Agutter (who wouldn't?) who, on a scale of 1-10, is a 500 in this movie. Pretty fun movie for its day. Richard Jordan is cool as Francis.
