Oh my God, THIS IS THE VIDEO I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND FOR SO LONG! 😱I've been trying to find a way that I can layer drum samples from different libraries (EzDrummer + GGD) without having to use some sort of audio trigger or something funky and have had some luck, but every option I've found has been clunky. This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to find! I just learned how to do this pretty easy in Reaper so then I figured there must be a way in Logic. I need to really learn more about this environment window, Apple really hid away one of the robust features of the software! Thank you os much for this video!
Thanks so much for this amazing, amazing series of Logic Pro X tutorials. The package is enormous and your information is so helpful! It has saved us hours of hard slog. Cheers Mate from Glenn & Dave.
Came here trying to solve a "new" problem, watched the video, got the answer in 15s. When I went to upvote the video, it was already upvoted. Now I'm trying to remember what I was working on where I needed to know this because I thought I was doing something I've never done before.
There should be a whole course on MIDI Environment. Ableton Live has everything already built audio/midi I/O into tracks themselves. However, visual representation is appreciated even though the GUI looks like an abandoned demolition site, where all the workers already found new jobs and started new lives. Took inspiration for getting MIDI from one track to another, thanks.
well when I posted my question I was away from my mac I just try this super cool I hope you do more of these tutorials in Logic Pro X use the environment
I am very new. This to me seems like a way to create a whole new instrument based on the sum of all the effects and intruments you are adding to that track you played.
I discovered as well that if you duplicate the monitor track as well you can have two midi tracks going into the same instrument track, handy tip thanks
Unbelievable how complicated Logic managed to make a simple function that has been apart of midi from the beginning. So crazy that you have to open up a whole other menu window to do routing instead of just have the midi input and out on the channel
Hey thank you for this video I would love to see more videos about the midi environment window, explaining it there is really not many videos out there explaining it
That would be awesome! Specially if it could address some kind of solution to one of Logic's (or rather, AU's) major shortcomings: recording scale/arp notes from an external controller such as the NI KK S-Series
For those who doesn't find the "Open MIDI Environment" option in the window menu, go to Preferences->Advanced Tools... and make sure the MIDI is checked!
Thank you very much for this video!! It helped me a lot! How do you make the text stand in two lines under the channelstrips in the environment window? :-)
Can you possibly do a video on some more advanced MIDI environment stuff? Mainly, External MIDI devices and loading custom environments for those devices. One of the biggest frustrations I have with Logic X is how this seems so impossible to do now. People used to put out custom environment layers for synths that had all the sounds and sound banks already loaded and the correct MIDI settings. You could just drag and drop them. Now you have to go through an import process and so far I haven't been able to get this to work correctly. Plenty of other grey areas in the MIDI environment as well. Would love to see something like that!
I was trying to accomplish something similar with Superior Drummer instead of a midi region and wasn't successful. Does anybody have any experience or ideas on how to duplicate the midi (in realtime) generated from another instrument plugin in Logic? Superior Drummer has a midi out option but no matter what I did I couldn't get it to send to Battery. Thanks for making this, it serves as a great practical introduction to the Logic Pro X MIDI environment.
Hi, thanks for your tutorials! I am stuck with some of the third party plugins multitimbral, I added Akai Essential (multitimbral ) to play my drums in separate tracks, I understand that the main track can record parts, then i go to mixer and with the + I've added the AUX ( which each AUX Channel shoes the multiple outputs-grey out) I tried in the environment window to create a multi instrument and connected to the individual AUX Cnls, still cannot get a separate part on these AUX's . Am I missing something? I doubled checked in the Essential plugin in the mixer I'm only able to add plugins, pan, volume etc etc, no individual output assignments I'd like to get the separated output in LogicX mixer any advice? Thank You!
Could you put these into a track stack to save screen space that way you could layer up the elements such as melody Harmony sfx etc could you have more than one midi environment windows running at a time
Cool! do you also have a tutorial on how to program the midi environment to use multiple hardware synths simultaneously and not have one trigger the other, and not have all synths act like midicontrollers?
Thanks, i did try several times, but it doesn't seem to work with external hardware synths using a 'fastlane' with additional A+B ports In the end i went to the 'instrument environment' and ticked 'Port - All'. I then simply changed the midi receive channel on the external synths which could probably be done internally, but ive not focused on that yet. btw, the default short cut to midi Environment on my Logic X is Command 8. 👍
This was very interesting and helpful thank you. However I do have a question. Do you know how to record already played in MIDI data from one track and use it as the input on another MIDI track and when recording it will play in the midi data automatically? Does this make sense? Thank you, any help would be greatly appreciated. I basically want to be able to record in the same MIDI data and add on a arpeggiator and it automatically write in the data. Thanks
Thank you for this!. I've been struggling with "MIDI signal flow" between Sibelius 8 and Logic Pro X. I know you can use IAC driver (Mac) or rewire to connect both programs, but my problem is that I need to send different MIDI data to different instruments in Logic. For example, a Flute and a Piano (two staves, two different MIDI data) in Sibelius connected to two different Software Instruments in Logic (one for each instrument) at the same time. How can I assign the specific routing in the environment for this to happen?
This is great. I'm currently learning or finding efficient drum programming using multiple EXS 24 tracks where each track contains a dedicated patch like "Kick", "SNARE", "HIHAT" so on. With your video and by adding addition splitter like object in between monitor and instrument objects, something good and nice workflow could be introduced..(in my head... something gonna hit me but not that be concrete ...). Any hint or guide?
Thanks for the video! Do you have a video that explains how to route one midi track with multiple notes, and have one of those specific note to trigger multiple instruments? I’m looking for a way to have one midi clip trigger C1 Kick (which sends to Kick inst, then to kick OH and rooms), C2 Snare (sends Snare inst, then to snare OH and rooms, etc. Thanks so much!
How about if you wanted to use the same midi track but have it "solo" different effects from the same instruments along the time line? For example bar 1-4 piano one arpeggio riff and then bar 5-8 another arp riff. Or how about changing the filters on the fly? How could one record those changes?
Thank you very much. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work when the MIDI file contains articulation sets. Do you know any way to be able to do the same but also transmit the articulation set data?
So I am trying to learn about How to use and create a Modulation Matrix`s In Logic Pro x Where I can group many midi parameters and then map or to a physical mod wheel on my midi keyboard So I can have more expression options on one mod wheel can this be done in Logic Pro x ? But I donot know where yo start
Hello, thank you Do you know if it’s possible to capture midi data from a track to another ? I mean, i would like to record the chords from komplete kontrol (native Instruments) to a track ? Sorry for my english...from France
Is there a way to record them when going through monitor blocks? Like if I have two controllers where one is controlling 4 channels simultaneously, and the other is controlling another 2 simultaneously, how do I record them? I tried going through Clicks and Ports in the midi environment and using transformers. But without being able to assign channels on monitor tracks to match the transformers, I don't know how to make it work. Sorry to ask but I can't find an answer anywhere. Thanks!
Is there any way to use logic as a mixer? I have a few drum machines and synths I am trying to have them all play at once while triggering from logic. I have to keep highlighting instrument and record all at once. It's kind of weird I just want to press play on logic and have all my sounds play without having to record all at once. Hope this makes sense.
I’ve been trying to find a new midi controller with a lot of zones so i can play live and do different things with different instruments live. The issue is I am still a little behind on midi but this may have solved my issue. I want to have the ability to also use arpeggios on certain channels live and possibly bring sounds in and out and whatever else i can think of. Trying to do a one man band sort of thing. Hopefully I can do this on logic for iPad also.
What I"m looking to do is have a multichannel instrument, and have only C1 apply only to Midi channel 1, have D1 only apply to channel 2, have E1 only apply to channel three, and so on and so forth, would you know how to do that ?
Is there more latency if I connect first the masterkey to PC and through PC I play masterkey for controlling the synth sounds? Since I want to connect my master keyboard to PC and also the synth to PC, and sometimes control the synth by midi message from master keyboard, what is the best connection without having latency??
In ableton you record Midi from another midi track. How do you do it in logic x? e.g. Use would to place a chord plugin on a midi track and then send that midi to another midi track to record all chords
Hi there, this is better helpful. I am trying to find more reasons not to switch to Ableton and although this helped a lot, I still can't achieve something available in Ableton. The ability to have multiple MIDI Instruments/Plug-ins and turn them on/off by Regions, or when the Playhead reaches a Marker. Any idea if this is possible?
Hi sir , I have latest update from logic . My metronome is triggering only with a data (midi or audio ). Havent faced this issue in earlier versions ,how to rectify this ?
quick question! i hit something on my key board now every time i open my song only the environment page comes up How do i return to my normal track page so i can record, see what i normally see etc. THANK YOU!
Hi thank you... I tried to do the same in live loop mode, but it doesnt work :-( ... it's not possibile to make a cell in the midi track ... Do you have any idea to solve it?
Hi I have a Korg Krome Logic Pro X I want to use the sequencer of logic , but not the Krome How can I use separately the 16 tracks and listen them individually I didn't get the right way Now I record track by track to logic And the I work with Eq, FX, etc Can I do The same but using the logic sequencer in Midi option ? Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Hey, thanks for the vid! Is there a way to then set each instrument to play only in a certain octave, not all together? I've scoured the web and can't find anything, would mean a lot if anyone can point me in the right direction.
yes, you can add modifiers to each channel coming out of the monitor splitter so that the midi is changed, limit note range, change velocity response etc.
