The last chapter in Rand's The Virtue of Selfishness on how to be immune to psychological manipulation and pressure.
Fallacies are common errors in reasoning that will undermine the logic of an argument. Fallacies can be either illegitimate arguments or irrelevant points, and are often identified because they lack evidence that supports their claim. If you know them, you can then avoid fallacies in your own arguments and watch for them in the arguments of others. Empower yourselves.

What is your favorite logical fallacy (to know about) and why?

False ultimatum/dilemma. So many problems don't merely have just two potential competing solutions. Humans maybe come from the childlike mind splitting opposites to understand difference, but mature, logical thinking is about a subtlety and recognition of all possibilities that can be ascertained.

What are the best strategies against control and manipulation, in your opinion?

There's always the _principle of indifference_ ? For instance, that debate is futile and what determines people's view is not debate but someones life-activity? Similar to what _Sun-Tzu_ said, the ultimate excellence is in not fighting, so maybe then cheap rhetoric's are not so bad at all ?

Yeah, I think indifference is key when the debate is futile. Effortless action, wu-wei. To not engage can be a strength when sincerity and integrity in an exchange are lacking. Love this and how you articulated it. Principle of Indifference.

Wu Wei is truly excellent for oneself, but control and manipulation happen in culture and law and must be addressed, fought, ridiculed, belittled, and thrown out of court.

@@chhhhhrisprinciple of indifference... like being cool? ...like.. beatniks and punks?

Absolutely. But I think wu-wei can be incorporated as an alternative route when those start to feel fruitless. Sometimes it is more effective in producing the desired result.

So Rand's fallacy is just Ad Hominem dressed up a bit? And that example, the way she uses it to bolster the main argument in her title, that selfishness can be virtuous, it's so spot on. Of course she'd argue that immoral points aren't necessarily wrong when she's trying to spread immorality. How could anyone in a democracy argue for the virtue of selfishness? She just wanted to be a little czarist princess, but her family had to flee to America. So she took it out on America. And look at the stereotypes she utilizes and how old-school aristocratic they are. She hated democracy. Period. And she died an old bitter woman on welfare.

Ha. It is true that if you look at her personal life, few might want to follow her approach to relationships. But in her philosophy, I think it can help some people, especially when they are trying to break from being susceptible to manipulation by others who enjoy controlling them. It can be empowering if you need a bit more courage and a way out of abuse. I think it is how you apply her ideas. She is critiquing the kind of selflessness that equates to self-death and extreme sacrifice and self-abandonment, at least that is how I read her.

@@philosophy_schilling I see... In this context, i guess I get that from Nietzsche more than anyone else. I love the freedom in losing our crutch that he describes. If God is dead, then we must create ourselves. That's just fugging lovely if you ask me.
