Lois in this case actually exhibited behavior seen in her past incarnations. Rash judgement, hot tempered, jumping into dangerous situations just to get to the bottom of a story, all character traits we've seen of her in past versions. The fact that the writers of the show made the audience fall in love with her before we saw all this just shows how well written her character is. People are just mad cause until this point, they just viewed her as a reincarnation of Luz Noceda.

I've said this elsewhere: Lois isn't upset at Clark, she is upset at her father. The biggest reason she liked him was his ethics. She thought she found a guy who was exactly the opposite of her father. Now it turns out he has a double life too and it is bringing out all her old resentments. Why do you think she became a "Crusading Journalist"? It's not so strange really. My grandmother said that the reason she fell for my grandfather in the first place was "he was the kindest man I had ever met." Considering that her father's way of greeting her was to loudly complain about how fat she had gotten, I cannot say I am surprised.

Edit: Now am I saying that justifies her jumping off a building just to prove a point. NO, but it does explain WHY she did it and WHY she was so mad at Clark. That reasoning falls apart when you realize Lois shouldn't have lied to Clark (and Jimmy) in the first episode, if she really resents her father who always kept secrets and lied then why would she do the same thing to people she cares about? Even when they start dating Lois still hides the sphere/kryptonite from him. if she actually practiced what she preaches she would've told him the next episode than reassure him she trusts he isn't a bad person, but she only does that later when Clark is at his lowest. I think a lot of people misunderstand the scene bc the writers did a bad job at explaining, but basically Amber figured out Mark was Invincible during the Cyborg attack and she wasn't mad that Mark ran away, but rather that he ran away to put on his costume, while his friend was being choked to death by a cyborg. She calls him a coward for caring more about his secret identity than his best friend. That was supposed to be the point, but they wrote it really really vague since we never get Amber's POV.

@@prophetofbara1214 it's all just part of lois' character. Having experienced her father hide so many secrets and slowly distance himself from her, Lois has developed a dislike to anyone who lies or witholds secrets. And she was especially angry with Clark because it's the one person she genuinely loves, and now the revelation is souring it for her. I love this version of Lois. Because for once, she feels like a real character. Not just a character’s girlfriend. She makes mistakes but that’s part of being human, and she apologizes for them. @KarateGirl999
@KarateGirl999 Год назад
I agree. If all that drama and misery didn't come first, those fireworks going off when they have their first kiss would be far too cheesy. Nah, the writers wanted to make this romance feel earned. Character development right there.

One thing the episode right after Lois's jump - their search for Jimmy - did was it made hindsight better. She made it very clear that her anger with Clark stemmed from a hurt, which in turn didn't come from him keeping a secret, but that him keeping that big a secret and being willing to go as far as he did to keep it, left her feeling very uncertain about where they stood as friends and as something more. Lois couldn't see where the lie ended and the truth began, and that made her feel very insecure and manipulated. All of that could apply to Amber too, but the Superman show takes the time to explore that. We get 'the love interest perspective'. Would love a shipping video about them from you! You always add an interesting perspective.
@windstar120025
@windstar120025 Год назад
Where the episode FAILS is that it doesn't let Clark set the reality of HIS boundaries. It just lets her guilt trip him into accepting the blame and telling Jimmy, when at the end of the day its still a personal problem on her side. Clark doesn't get to defend himself from being vilified to her problems, and is forced to take the fault. Like a real person SHE ignores the fact he has personal reasons for keeping his secrets, ignores the fact he had the right to the privacy of said secret, ignores the fact that the ONLY lie's he ever told her were to keep his secret secure, ignores the fact she wasn't entitled to said secret, and ignores the fact that SHE was in the wrong about how she handled the situation. She's acting like a real person and people are reasonably getting mad at her for the same reason they would get mad at a real person doing what she does. What s sad is that the show doesn't act like Clark has the right to defend himself against Lois emotionally, acting like Lois being upset emotionally is more important that Clark being treated fairly, which is a very real issue IRL and is sad to see even a fictional character get away with it like it ISN'T a problem.

She expected Mark to not lie to her. Keep a secret is not lying but lying to keep the secret is. And while yes, Eve does say that, Mark already decided he wanted to tell her but kept stringing her along while being an asshole. And what puts her life in jeopardy more than revealing the secret is being in a relationship with them. Her life is in danger ether or not she knows his secret identity as a superhero because she is dating a superhero. He would not be sharing out of the blue because sharing with Amber would be no different that sharing it with Eve, someone he had known just as long as Amber. Amber established that the relationship was serious, Mark almost gave up be a hero because of Amber so that means that if he was willing to do that for her then he should have told her sooner. You don’t give up being a hero for someone you are not serious with.

Good comparison of how Lois is NOT as bad as Amber. I honestly think that Lois was wrong to do what she did to expose Clark's secret since it wasn't hers to know until Clark was ready to tell, but I understand why Lois would do what she did. I honestly think that Lois and Clark will be able to work out this issue better than Mark and Amber because Lois and Clark do genuinely care about each other, and they haven't even started a relationship.

Lois is actually well written and nowhere near toxic. Jumping off the building was a toxic thing to do, but it's not poor writing they're flawed. All the characters are flawed. The major issue I think people have with it, is what entitled Lois to know Clark's the secret, when he had every reason to believe she'd blab about it? She's not a bad character, she just made a bad choice.

As the video said, "Lois is messy!" Really all versions of Lois are, as even Ep. 8 spoofed, lol! Fortunately, all animated versions, and live-action TV versions, of Clark are not "mild-mannered" doormats. Really, most of the iterations in recent decades aren't. He does get angry, and will snap back! Same for ALL versions of Superman! And I think you're right, while some are comparing her to (their perception of) Amber, some people are upset that Lois felt entitled to Clark's secret from the start. Even with her issues with her father, she only recently met Clark. Thinking he's automatically obligated to tell her he's Superman wouldn't sit right with many. (Interestingly, all versions of Lois get angrier at a character when she gets mad and they respond in kind, including Clark/Supes. Like they suppose to let her yell at them and just take it. Sorry Lois, but no way everyone would be okay with that. Even more interesting is in this case, both Lois and Clark got mad at each other for lying/manipulating each other and keep secrets from each other (as the video also mentions). Then, they got madder cause the other wasn't understanding their thoughts and feelings about it. THEN each got angrier because the other was mad at them! And Lois, like again all other Lois', got even angrier because again Clark responded in kind to her yelling at him! Her both pushing her insecurities and trust issues from her father onto Clark and in opposition to his insecurities was the icing on the cake.)

Well because Lois is still a good person, and Clark sees that in her. Which is why he was still so supportive about her Superman quest, and why near the end of episode 3, he allowed her to do the interview. And also why immediately after the interview when Lois apologized to Clark for putting him in danger, he forgave her and reassured her.
@TheEphemeralEternity
@TheEphemeralEternity Год назад
Let me preface by saying, I like this new Lois. She's enthusiastic and hard-working with backstory and motivations that make sense for how her character has developed over her life span. She is not perfect either, as it was mentioned, she has a rather human reckless streak that has bitten her on more than one occasion. Lois is better written than Amber, by far, her disdain for his secret keeping behaviors is more foreshadowed throughout the episodes and she seems to genuinely care about Clark when he got hurt fighting crime....HOWEVER, throwing herself off of the roof was not the way to handle it because she never confirmed that as truth. You can frame that as conviction...but in truth, IF she was wrong (which she so single-mindedly believed she wasn't), then she instantaneously proved that she was content letting the burden of her crumpled body on the sidewalk fall solely on Clark's shoulders. She cared more about being right in that moment than she ever did about Clark. I understand that she was hurt, but she directed all of that pain and more at someone who had been as kind and supportive of her as he could be given the genuine gravity of his true identity. Putting this kind of burden on someone who is close to you, even if you think you can rely on them to endure it, is cruel at best. Moreover, even if she is right, what if Clark decided it was for the best to let her fall? Clark is genuinely a stand up guy among stand up guys, but what if Superman thought that his complete anonymity was too valuable? She would still have died.... She (in an understandable fit of anger against his secrecy and reckless behavior) threw her life away in an equally reckless fashion. Even if she is trying to prove a point, there may be repercussions to those actions that could have never been taken back. Clark is reckless because he naturally can be....not to say that he should be reckless, but the writer's are aware that she and him cannot handle life threatening challenges in the same way. When he later saves her from being shot at and is asked if he knew that he was bulletproof, his response was, "I just knew you weren't." This is the same reckless behavior both of them keep expressing...it comes from a good place, but it's mindless and only one of them can bank on taking chances like that. Lastly, juxtaposed to Jimmy's reaction, Lois did not handle the reveal of Clark's identity well. Jimmy is Clark's best friend, but the 3 of them are often depicted as being equally close (minus the romantic interests). Moreover, Jimmy was not as invested in finding out Superman's identity and likely knew even less than she did despite living with him, while Lois was so wholeheartedly certain to the point that she would jump off a building to verify the claim. Why are their responses so different? Because she is obsessive and wants to be right. Yes, she is hurt, but she had not displayed signs of being depressed to the point of self-harm. She threw herself off simply because she wanted to know something she already knew, and then blew up at him afterward for not telling her what she already knew. If you are that certain, why do you need to risk your life to force it out of him? Again... I love Lois, and I could see many people doing some questionable things when someone they care about deeply is keeping large secrets from them, but this was extreme and shows some real cracks in the pavement.

Exactly. People can't be entitled to know other people's secrets. Privacy is a right everyone should have. Some secrets are there to protect themselves or others. Imagine if Lois was trying to bully someone else to reveal they were gay or had been abused in the past? All of a sudden, it reads as obviously toxic. Which it still is with Clark. This is not an acceptable way to handle privacy and I wish the writing would stop trying to make them look equally culpable, when Lois is the one who needs to learn to respect people's boundaries. (even if she is a reporter... even they need to follow the law)

I get where you're coming from, but imo this is a good take on a young Lois who is so reckless and tunnel-visioned in her quest for truth that she would literally throw herself off a building to prove a point. This is kind of the crux of her character-she has good intuition for a story but the self preservation of a lemming. In literally the first episode she insists on staying for the fight just because she wants to know what's going on. In my opinion, if the writers are at all competent she will start to be more willing to think things through and plan her investigations, rather than having "fuck around, find out" be her motto. This is the start of a character arc, and it will hopefully end in a place where she is more able to judge when something is worth the danger (and also how putting herself in danger takes a toll on other people, Clark especially). She is kind of self centred at the moment, and that makes me excited to see what will change her to be more willing to look at things from other people's points of view.
@TheEphemeralEternity
@TheEphemeralEternity Год назад
@notlurking2128 This is the exact mindset I'm watching with too. She is learning and making some bad decisions, like any human being would, on their way to finding a fulfilling pupose. This iteration, is probably my favorite BECAUSE she isn't a perfect character out of the box. She has a role in the story and enough room to visibly progress without undermining the rest of the story. That's how you know the writer's took great care when they wrote her.
@TheEphemeralEternity

@chronorogue863 I can agree to an extent. Everyone does have a right to privacy, but keeping important secrets from the people you care about and surround yourself with will only lead to tension and pain in the future. She wasn't right to force it out of him, and she certainly did not make it easy to talk about with how often she bashed Superman in front of Clark, but he needed to lower his walls to the few trustworthy people who were bound to find out eventually. Bottling stress and putting up extra walls to isolate oneself in one aspect or another is also a toxic behavior. In short, their association (while very cute) was destined to be toxic, and they both can do better.

Essentially calling out that he cares more about his secret identity than his best friend's life. She also says as a joke that Mark was off saving the world when they go on a date, which could be read as her not knowing and just joking, or she's suspecting him and just tries to give a hint so that Mark would open up about it and tell her the truth. The writers didn't make it clear what she knew and when and whether she suspected it and just wasn't sure before, because we aren't following Amber's POV.

@@davidbodor1762 It doesn't mesh. The writers did a poor job and messed up her character with that she knew line. We all know that. And we are right to assume the worst of her given what we know and is shown. My point was you said people are missing something when in fact your point is basically your own head canon and until new scenes in the show release supporting your point, the show as it is currently is actually doing the opposite. Because based on your logic, I could just say: "Unfortunately, people are missing a major character trait of Amber. She is self-reliant, independent, likes having all the facts, and knowing that she is the smartest in the room. So when Mark revealed his identity to her, she had to pretend she knew all along because it was obvious in hindsight and not figuring it out herself makes her look stupid. That's why the previous scenes don't make sense. Its because she is lying. She is pretending to have known because she doesn't want that to be an excuse." In fact, the writers could go this route to give Amber more flaws and have the previous scenes mesh better. Would fans like it, at this point, no. The show itself went out of its way to make her right.

Lois had a moment of irrational, emotional, human impulse, as we all do; and that's how the show treats it. That is the biggest difference between this and the Invincible situation. Invincible's writing in itself was on Amber's side, leading to really audaciously written moments like where both Eve and Will, against all logic and reason, reprimand Mark for what happened with Amber despite the fact that any member of the audience *with common sense* knows that he didn't do a damn thing he shouldn't have. In MAWSM, when Lois makes a mistake, it is *treated like a mistake* by the writers; because unlike Amber, Lois is not written as a pretentious, noxiously holier-than-thou Mary Sue. I think they could've fixed the Amber and Mark/Invincible thing if they had added in a line where it basically says she found out recently, like in a "I put it together on the car ride home after news reports of a beat up Invincible came on and I saw how badly you were hurt. I looked further into it while you slept, and past events where you were gone lined up when Invincible wasn't." Kind of thing to (possibly) not have the actual revel go down as badly as it did

Lois and competent is a hard thing to put together, Jimmy though yeah. For Lois there is the critical issue of her actions being driven by a "Betrayal" fueled sense of entitlement. Its a realistic issue with people, but the realism isn't the issue people are simply having a natural response of distaste to Lois' behavior.

The worst thing about Amber, even if Amber was justified in everything else she does, is that she decides to give Mark more time to tell her he’s a hero, but then gets mad at him immediately after he shows back up from the attack, despite giving him literally zero chances to tell her he was Invincible, since they were either in public, or she was avoiding him. He even tells her the first chance he gets, and she slams the door in his face, then tells him to ‘fly away, flyboy.’

The issue with Amber was less her getting mad at Mark and more the weird “I knew you were a superhero already” twist they clearly didn’t have planned out If they had just stuck to her not knowing, then it would’ve been pretty justified to be upset at Mark for constantly running off on her out of nowhere and leading her on With Lois, her figuring out Clark’s identity was clearly planned out, so the writers could write around her being upset Clark would lie to her over the course of the show. That’s really different from Amber cause they basically changed the reason she was upset last minute for the sake of the twist. And in retrospect, her having the full context of Mark’s situation made her being upset worse

On one hand, a Spider-Man vid made an important point that you should let your loved ones know about the secret identity for their safety. God forbid a villain figures it out and decides to go after a significant other, kid(s) etc., they can at least have some kind of game plan/strategy to escape and get help or just not freak out to the point of having a heart attack. On the other hand, despite relationships requiring honest and clear communication, I don’t think that it necessarily means anyone’s entitled to everything about someone. I also keep in mind that despite what the show is trying to depict, these couples have only known each other for a relatively short time (anywhere from say a few weeks to a couple months) at least in my eyes. The time obviously varies from person to person, I’d wait longer to reveal something of this magnitude to anyone. Thanks for awesome vid SC!❤

1. Lois in this show was alrey setup to have massive trust issues because of her father 2. She gets over it pretty quickly and is understanding that, at the end of the day, Clark is genuine about wanting to help people and that he didn't want his friends to treat him differently cause of him being a literal alien Unlike Amber who KNEW about Mark being Invincible and still called him a coward in front of everyone, probably hoping to goad him into telling the truth and then acts like *he's in the wrong*
@ThatKaitoDan
@ThatKaitoDan Год назад
Pretty much nailed all the counterpoints to this claim I have, though there's also the major detail that Lois the episode prior to this scene told Clark she's alredy gone through a rough time where her father's secrecy and unwillingness to let Lois in on what he's hiding has caused her years of grief and a divide from her father. The fact she told Clark that clearly shows how much she trusts him with such personal details & how much she values him in her life, cut to later on and now she learns Clark has his own big secret he's hiding from her so now it's become not so much Lois wants to know who Superman is for personal gain, it's wanting Clark to show the same trust she just put into him back to her, making it sting all the more he keeps dipping the chance, making her feel like Clark isn't as genuine with his clear feelings for her as she thought. You can trade the secret being about a superhero identity out with any other major secret, it's still an issue of trust & how well-meaning yet flawed actions can cause even the most good natured & positive relationships to create cracks of their own making.

Lois doing something like that is perfectly in character with many versions of the character. The biggest difference between Lois and Amber is that Lois is endgame for Clark while Amber is just Mark's first love. So making her look bad to push Mark away from her and towards Eve is kind of the point. Especially since the show removed another road block toward Mark and Eve ending up together that exists in the comics. William being openly gay instead of a closet case like in the comics means they will skip him and Eve dating.

This video actually covered every point I wanted to see in a video involving the Amber Situation and then some. it covers Amber's perspective before the twist, Mark's Superhero dilemma, the general tropes involved in Superhero dating involving the Secret Identity. I especially like the covering of how this twist conflicts with previous events and makes Amber look worse than the writers intended. Like this twist was probably decided on after the cyborg human attack scene at the university and the writers either didn't realize the subversion was impossible to do without making Amber look bad or they realized it but really wanted to make it work. The second option would explain why Mark's friends' immediate side with Amber after the situation. They needed for it to be Marks fault so they double down by having his two closest friends tell him he's the one at fault.
