Taylor R was actually part of the dolly subculture many years ago, so she does have a vested interest in J-fashion, even though it's not lolita edit: Yeah, when she was saying "it's a reason to wear circle lenses, to dress like a doll," the context is that her youtube channel used to be a dolly fashion channel, and that was how she always dressed. She moved on from the style, but she's excited to do something nostalgic that she used to do every day. Honestly, this is more like a goth/edgy version of her old makeup with some Mana inspiration But there was no reason for Lor to know all that, she'd have had to do a huge deep dive into Taylor R! Really great video, Lor, and nice balanced critique. You're always so nice.

Everyone brings up the my strange addiction episode about LIVING DOLLS when they talk about mainstream coverage of Lolita when it had nothing to do with the Lolita community. Yes a lot of living dolls like Lolita fashion and will wear it time to time but they are different from Lolitas.

I reacted to the living dolls episode and I have first hand with the production because they interviewed me to be in it lol the final product was not marketed to be about lolitas but they manipulated the people they interviewed who some of which identified as lolitas. They tricked and edited them under the illusion of a jfashion documentary without telling them it was for my strange addiction. This is why it is brought up a lot. I explained it in more detail in my react to that doc 🎉💕

@@anastasiab1066 he recently made a "lolita transformation" video, which he was informed after posting that his look was very much NOT lolita, and much more of a sexy-ish kawaii look, and he pinned a comment and i think changed the description to acknowledge that, but didn't change anything about the video(he couldn't change the thumbnail and he said lolita a lot in the video, and it would've been a lot to edit out). Yes, he did misconstrue how the fashion works, but it was a sponsored video and the dress he found on the site that sponsored it claimed to be lolita, so while i and many others in the community would've liked for him to do some research before doing the video, he was just trying to do something fun and was also given the impression that something that wasn't lolita was. And while many Lolitas were politely correcting him publicly, a LOT of people in the lolita community (and possibly outside the community getting offended on our behalf) went way too far and started harassing him through DM's and email, eventually driving him to relapse into his ED bc of the stress. This is kinda unrelated, but now he has a bad view of the community, which i honestly can't blame him for, but some of his fans have started harassing the Lolitas that weren't doing anything wrong, so the whole situation got pretty out of hand.

Hey Lor I would like to know if you could review a section on another youtuber’s video where they discussed Lolita fashions influence on tumblr aesthetics. Channel is called ModernGurlz and the video is “Tumblr aesthetics of the 2010’s”. A lot of lolitas in the comments were quite displeased with the coverage of the subject. I’m a newbie and wasn’t on tumblr back then so I would like to know your opinion on it. I’m actually a fan of their channel.

i'm not sure how accurate love nikki is in its portrayal of lolita, but even in her reference at 10:39 the in-game outfit has a longer skirt and tights rather than thigh highs. i think there's even an irl dress based on the in-game outfit that she could've taken inspiration from.

From what I have noticed, I think most of what LoveNikki labels as 'Lolita' in the game isn't Lolita either. The dress in the image is labled as just 'gothic' in the game too lol There are a few irl versions of the LN dresses on AliExpress and Taobao, but I don't THINK that's one of them... it might be, but I don't ever remember seeing it.

Love Nikki is a little meh on the issue. Some of their stuff genuinely looks like proper lolita, but most of what they label as lolita is NOT lolita at all. And some of their most lolita-esc outfits they don't even label as lolita. Most of what they label as lolita are tutus and sweet 16 dress looking junk.

@@SpicePrincess1890 yeah it’s not Lolita at all I wish she could’ve tried a little bit harder and did a little more research about this and if she will just search up Lolita it will pop up all she have to do is look at images I think she’s just putting everything into a category I don’t know why but she’s just putting everything in a category because most of the things she label Lollita does not look Lollita at all I wish she could’ve spent a little more time on The outfit, the wig did not go at all I’m not trying to be rude but that outfit seems more of Halloween dress or a cheap cosplay or something you were to a Halloween party to look a little bit spooky I wish youtubers would put a little more time in effort when they do Lolita fashion I have seen some RU-vidrs who did a really good job doing Lolita fashion I think the only reason why she did this video was there to get the sponsor out and she might’ve thought this dress looks a little bit like Gothic Lollita I think that’s the reason why she even made this video and the makeup it was OK it’s not really well I’m not trying to be rude or anything but the make up does not sit well with me A lot of people used to where doll like makeup to make them see more Lolita I’m glad people stop using the type of make up most of the time it does not look well with the outfit if she would’ve did a research she could’ve known that her going with simple make up would it look better

@@SpicePrincess1890 The game that sponsor her has their own Lollita fashion shop in that dress that we saw in the game that she was trying to copy is the actual Lolita dress it doesn’t look really gothic Lolita it seems more of a classic Lollita with dark colors

I feel like Taylor is well versed in jfashion enough to understand that there is a bit of a difference between what ppl wear on the street and what models and performers wear, using Mana-sama a known VISUAL KEI artist as a makeup reference is a bit weird, like would she expect the entire lolita comm to wear visual kei style makeup??? No hate to her of course but like a tiny bit more research, even just looking at street snaps, would have cleared up her confusion. I'm glad we're out of that stage of lolita fashion where everyone felt they needed to wear circle lenses, wigs and exaggerated "doll eye" makeup to be "real lolitas" (yes I still wear all of those things but I no longer feel compelled to put them on for every outfit and I've been comfortable just wearing eyeliner, blush and bb cream)

I think that Love Nikki asked her to recreate the suit that appeared on the right of her video, that's why the black lipstick and purple wig. It would be better for both communites if she just named her video "Recreating a Love Nikki suit" or something like that, or recreating Love Nikki makeups, I would have watched it for sure xD

Even though the results aren't lolita, she still looks cute! I really appreciate this React video. You acknowledge that this person doesn't make lolita content normally, and address the need not to spread hate and anger. (Its understandable to get upset when we see non-lolitas do these type of videos and the end results are..well, not lolita. Especially since we explained what lolita fashion is a billion times, and there is a plethora of resources. But I don't think that bashing others and being rude/mean is the way to go)

I especially like and appreciate you mentioning maybe don’t flood people with the same input. My heart broke when Dorian (Of Herbs and Altars) expressed the panic and relapse they had following the flood of hate from their lolita video, so thank you for always being a beacon of light.

The problem with Dorian was that he advertised to his decent-sized audience that lingerie was lolita without doing his research. When polite lolitas voiced their opinions and critiques, he doubled down. Yes, it was a sponsor and yes that’s what his sponsor called the outfit, but he made a whole video called “lolita transformation” wearing lingerie and fetish gear.

@@atinyevil1383 Which I agree with, but at the same time the /quantity/ of responses he received were so plentiful. I absolutely agree that the video was inappropriate towards the lolita community and that it was quite ignorant, but I also understand that a few responses would’ve sufficed and the pile of crap they ended up with wasn’t the most helpful. It sounded like they understood pretty quickly that they messed up but that it continued well past that point. Dorian couldve made a post stating that they appreciated and understood the feedback to try and halt responses, but I also know it probably wouldve continued anyways if he posted the update as not everyone wouldve seen it

@@atinyevil1383 I feel something worth pointing out here is that he had gotten several comments about it not being lolita within an hour of posting the video (I know bcs I was one of those, since I follow him) and he probably would have started interacting with those comments soon and realized what happened. Then *someone* made a video about it, and suddenly he was getting flooded w essays, rude comments, and misgendering. I don’t know how people expected him to react, but it was clear to me that he wasn’t going to have a nice and logical reaction to such an irrational situation. He made a video w bad information and the response he got was so overwhelmingly negative that nothing good could have come of it

So the inspiration (and sponsor, I play that game way too much 😆) is from the game love nikki which has released their own lolita pieces through their brand nikki tomorrow, so its such a bummer that she didn’t get one of those! I don’t think it’s cosplaying a character though because the reference is still from love nikki and that dress (the actual gothic lolita dress in the game) is more of an outfit that you can play with and not really an actual character from the game.

I’ve been watching Taylor for a few years, she used to dress in more a doll like way, that included some Lolita stuff. The final look, to me, looked like her old style in a darker vibe. So I assume that is why her finish look was like that. (Also as someone who is actually goth I actually liked the way she looked, though I wouldn’t call it gothic Lolita)

No hate towards her, its a very cute look on its own, but in terms of lolita, I audibly went, "oof" at that skirt length. Like on its own, its very cute, it reminds me of something KillStar would release saying its "lolita inspired". Embracing the cute goth side, I'd recommend giant chunky boots and some fun leg wear of ripped tights and/fish nets, also one of those giant wide brimmed hats would look nice. I hope she got some use out of it instead of it going to die in her closet lol

Honestly the scale of the dress in proportion to her body look like she got a large dress intended for a child instead of a small dress intended for an adult. hence the limited space under the skirt, odd length of sleeve and too short skirt. That same dress would look fine on a child with shorter frame and narrower hips allowing for a petti to be added.

I think she did a pretty good job for a complete and total beginner. Better than my first attempt which was just... not even remotely close. I literally wore a cheap dress from Hot Topic. It just needed a few tweaks to be an acceptable first coord. The makeup was nice. The black lipstick was pretty.

I remember when Taylor was in that dolly fashion phase with Venus, they both kind of went along with people referring to dolly style as lolita inspired. It’s been a while since she’s been in any kind of J-fashion though, she was like 19/20? then and she’s 32 now, so I feel like her memory just kind of blurred the edges and just kinda went “yeah, I’m familiar with lolita fashion”

It's been 5 years since she uploaded this video and she still refuses to change the title to just "Gothic Transformation" She deleted most of the comments trying to inform her that this isn't "Gothic Lolita" and you can wear any makeup style with Lolita. She's misinforming people into thinking you have to wear heavy black makeup to be a gothic lolita, I know it was unintentional but she could at least change the title.

I love the lolita reacts series but I feel like reactions to documentaries are way more interesting cause with individual content creators it's kinda always the same. They're lacking the knowledge of what lolita actually is but like u said that's not the end of the world and I think they're gonna learn due to comments etc, while documentaries go out of their way to frame lolitas a certain way and it's very interesting to get lors input as someone how is knowledgeable in that sort of thing.

Can't you get a lacy petty coat to add length? I used to do this with petty coats under my skirts to add volume and length but I'm not lolita in any way.

Yep but if it's a tulle petticoat you wanna put an opaque fabric underskirt of some kind over it. Seeing the dress made me think a black fluffy skirt with a ruffle at the bottom with a petticoat underneath would be exactly what that dress needs to become lolita.

Like a lot of historical fashion trends, Lolita is much more about silhouette and creating a cohesive look. Within the boundaries of that silhouette you can be very creative. For me, "restrictions" are a really great way to get creative. And so withing the guidelines of the Lolita look, you are free to create, interpret, and innovate. It's a bit like poetry. Once you know how to write in iambic pentameter and within a rhyme scheme, then you can go break the rules in new and interesting ways. :)

I was honestly so surprised by this video coming from her. She even pulled up a photo of someone she’s friends with to get an example of gothic lolita. I’m sure she has at least a couple of friend who could tell her about this style. Also, the fact that she lived in Japan for quite a long time and has sported looks that were in a similar genre (in some ways) yet not even knowing what gothic lolita is, really surprised me. I feel like she could’ve done a way better job at this, and I’m not even sure why she created this video. But, it’s her content, her decision, and there are no rules in fashion and makeup (in my opinion). I expected more, but that’s what we got 🤷‍♀️

She actually has said that she only took modeling gigs that allowed her to keep circle lenses in, because she preferred her looks in them. She had to deny some gigs because they did not want her to have circle lenses in.

Setting aside the general issue of it not being lolita fashion, it doesn’t look like the reference Love Nikki set? Like the purple wig in the set is more muted and the length of the skirt is significantly longer and has more volume. And the set has tights instead of otks, which maybe is nit picking but it just seems like such a simple thing to switch out and have it be that much more similar to the original set? Plus of course the outfit has a print and incorporates more purple than just the wig, which helps balance that out.

Tbh I feel like the lolita community focuses too much on preservation and deflects too much from the pop-culture that inspired it. Criticisms are wildly inconsistent anyways, that's why it's easy for newcomers to make "mistakes" when there are 100+ rules that don't exist that people will hold them to. So what if there is no petticoat, or it's shorter? She's wearing high-highs, and so??? None of these individual things make or break the fashion. Most ppl looking at her would be able to still accurately guess what she's going for one way or another. I think it's silly to demand a fashion stay stagnant or create different subgroups for every little variation of the same concept we all love. Unless they're aiming for a specific look, let lolitas be the lolita they want to be. Stop holding other people in the community hostage for your own trauma. (Not directed at Lor, but at nasty ppl sending hate to others for not being perfect/ideal).

Considering how many of these video comments can get totally out of hand, maybe it would be better to ask these creators in advance if you can react/critique their videos on your own platform? Since you can't control the actions of your viewers. 😅

I honestly disagree with the skirt length comment- this is clearly Atelier Pierrot inspired and they in fact have corset skirts this short, albeit for more Ero Lolita.

There are exceptions in every brand but in the community the "mini" skirt length is widely considered to not be a lolita piece. AP releases a lot of shorter more casual skirts but you can't fit a petti under them and they're better for things like fairy kei or larme. If someone who is outside of the community wants to do a look and label it lolita I think they should be more particular towards the rules instead of cherry-picking for their own aesthetic.

@@Miss-Fired I don’t know why you bringing up AP designs and what non-lolita style they cater to, when I specifically pointed out which brand, that is not AP, this took inspiration from, and which specific niche lolita style this is catering to? I didn’t say this piece nor the outfit looked good (or that the outfit was lolita) I just pointed out this one piece of misinformation.

@@AlexisSirena Because it is in the same topic of discussion. Atelier Pierrot makes shorter, corseted skirts but Taylor's look isn't stated as being Ero or even visual kei, she labels it Gothic Lolita and short skirts aren't part of that sub style.
