One might argue that allowing a fighter to come in and fight at 15-20 lbs heavier than the agreed upon weight limit IS CHEATING. The clause is there to make sure the fighters stay as close to the agreed upon weight as possible. If one can't make that weight, then maybe one shouldn't be forcing themselves into that weight class. Also, if you signed the contract then ignored a condition in the contract, you practically guarantee that you will be sued by the opponent and the organization and maybe even the sponsors.

The fact is, delayed rehydration has serious consequences on health, some permanent. The length of time that the brain is deprived of water is just as bad as deprivation of oxygen. Some neuronal connections are lost and might never be recovered. The medical aspect of this had been ignored for too long. It is the same as accepting to be wounded by contractual consent, or accepting to lose the fight for money because we have to be conscious that fighters who submit to a rehydration clause, almost never win the fight.

The solution imho, however, is to limit/restrict weight cutting altogether and have people fight as close to their natural walk around weight as possible. Going the other way and allowing them to blow up a few classes between weigh-in's and fight time not only negates the point of having weight classes but also allows for fighters to now use weight bullying tactics. As long as weight cutting rules remain the same, fighters like Gervonta are free to use that system to gain advantage before the fight even begins, or fighters like Garcia can also use the system to gain an advantage. Gervonta won the negotiations, plain and simple. If one has a problem with the deal or contract, don't sign it. Should the rules change for the better? Yes, of course. should one sign a contract then deliberately ignore it's conditions? No. specially in a high profile situation where many entities have high stakes involved.
