The star that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you, Starman, have burned so very, very brightly. You were the soundtrack to my life, my inspiration, and you gave me the confidence to be myself. Thank you. I miss you more than I know how to say. Rest in Power. Rest in Peace.
"London Bye Ta Ta" is a song written by David Bowie as stated on the video it was scheduled to be the follow-up to "Space Oddity" but Bowie decided to replace it with "The Prettiest Star", which might have been a bad decision as "Star" sold less than 800 copies. This IS the original 1968 version to which the master tape was lost afterwards and it was re-recorded in 1970 (also available on RU-vid). The 1968 version survived on metal acetate, bootleg singles and a 1991 CD bootleg "Naked & Wired".
This track was one of four songs submitted to Decca as a proposed fourth single. None were issued and Bowie changed record labels. After the success of 'Space Oddity', Bowie compiled 'The World of' for Decca to cash in on his success. The new tracks [bar 'Ta Ta'] were included. As Bowie was about to re-record the song again for Mercury as a single [also ironically unreleased], it makes you wonder if this omission was intentional, as it's inclusion may have damaged sales of the new version?
