London Marathon: Peres Jepchirchir breaks record as elite runners secure Olympic places

Peres Jepchirchir sprinted clear of three rivals to claim the women’s-only world record, finishing with a time of 2hr 16min 16sec. After the race, Jepchirchir said: 'I was not expecting to run a world record - I knew it might be beaten but I did not expect it to be me.' Jepchirchir's performance was also enough to secure her place at Paris 2024, an achievement also claimed by the men's elite winner Alexander Mutiso Munyao and Britain’s Emile Cairess who finished in third.

True. HE got selected. The other two are Eliud Kipchoge and Benson Kipruto with Timothy Kiplagat as a reserve. Had Kelvin Kiptum lived, had he not died, it is very possible that this guy would not have been among the top three. HE'd probably have been the reserve. Women: 1. Peres Jepchirchir 2. Hellen Obiri 3. Brigid Kosgei (this was a crazy selection). We had Sharon Lokedi and Rosemary Wanjiru but they settled on her. Reserve: Sharon Lokedi. WE have a very strong team but Brigid was probably a mistake.
