This was terrible but this country is even worse now because at least then there was a moral concern for poverty and other human beings. Under the influence of today’s government those moral concerns for one’s fellow people has sadly dwindled to shameful levels. There was widespread financial poverty then but the moral poverty is far worse now.

There should be accommodation, available for the homeless. We are a 1st world country, that is currently housing illegal immigrants, arriving by boats, across the channel.

they are many people who are unfit or unable to compete in the market place. How can government help such individuals? that is a question we need to answer as welfare and development economists. Of course, poverty has existed since time immemorial in every nook and corner of the world. The UK is no exception to this development. Poverty alleviation can only be done by reducing the role of the government in the economy. Too much government spending does not create any kind of permanent jobs or businesses, through collective mechanisms of production, consumption and exchange. One must read what Hayek had said on these economic and philosophical matters. What to do with those who are not keen to change their lives? once you put people on the dole they shall remain on the dole in longevity. Hence, I am not a big fan of government-sponsored welfare economic programs.
