I started watching this channel after the episode on abandoned soviet reactors, it’s turned into one of the most interesting channels on here. The Brocken episode was outstanding

Retired architect here, with experience in designing four and five star hotels. Your descriptions of your room and other supporting facilities are spot on, and much the standard particularly in renovation type projects but also found in new projects as well. The emphasis is on finishes which can (and will) be replaced frequently within five years to "update identity". As you point out, the proximity to connection here is key, and the atmosphere and service can be accepted given that need. The big hotel chains calculate that sort of thing. I was pleased to see much of the original Victorian Gothic architecture treated respectfully. Frankly, I was surprised it was done by Marriott, known far more for its low cost humdrum environments.

A tip for booking a room in any major hotel group - ask if they provide disabled bedrooms. Usually they are the same price as a standard room and often can be booked without having a wheelchair. These often come with a wetroom style bathroom which I found very convenient and has much more space than the room you wound up with. I am not disabled but do suffer with ack problems so appreciated this type of room

The slow service and average quality food at the restaurant is a bit of a worry for the prices they charge. However, there's a Scottish themed restaurant just across the square with very fast service and modest prices. I think it is called McDonald's?

A great tour, but I don't find the room to be up to the lofty price level!

London rooms are always like this. Oddly enough, an exception is the Premier Inn at Heathrow Terminal 4, which is larger than expected.

Interesting visit, I went round this place 30 years ago when I was at art college . It was in a right old state then , was a cracking trip seeing some of the old wooden victorian lifts. Good to see it being used for its original purpose although seeing the orginal photos looks like its not as fancy as the original. All best Will 👍🍻

It's my experience that if you go through a booking website, you won't get Marriott points. Is that right? It's a beautiful hotel, and there's a lot to be said for being so close for a very early Eurostar departure, but by the same token, there won't be much traffic either and a different hotel + a cab to St Pancras is easy too. It might be a better fit if your train was around checkout time, when you don't want the angst of getting to the station from further away. The room looked small and you shouldn't have to wait at checkin at these sorts of places. Thank you for the review, Andy.

I stayed there when it first opened, think I paid around £200 for a similar room. Was worth it as I could have a snoop around the old part of the hotel and the impressive staircase. Would I stay there again? Probably not unless I was catching the train next door.

So if only the ground floor bedrooms are Victorian what are all the upper Victorian rooms now Used for?

The restaurants and bars had great style and were lovely. But your room looked very ordinary - I couldn't really see a big difference to a Holiday Inn or Travelodge! After all, you're only sleeping in the room for a night! But location was very convenient, especially as they've now closed my Eurostar stations at Ebbsfleet and Ashford International.

The historic rooms will cost what you'd imagine in a 5 star hotel. But its fab & definately worth going for a drink in the Bookings Office or Gilbert & Scott Bar. You could also get coffee in the lovely foyer which has a very nice stmosphere. The lunch time menu used to be good value, but my info may be out of date.

I used to work here briefly in the late 80's before refurbishment. A real horrible dump with the known problems at the time. Pleasantly surprised how it all looks today.

Useful review. As a 'standard room', as you say rather 'basic' , rather blandly furnished but well finished. I would be a trifle disappointed given the nature of the building. So, I would assume to get a more luxurious feel, you'd need an upgrade to a bigger room or even a small suite. I think the standard rooms are 30sq.m - quite 'compact'.
