In this video, I will show you how to easily diagnosis a long crank, extended crank or a hard start on a Chevy pickup truck. 5.7l or 6.0l engines
Just a recap of what you should do first to determine if your long crank before starting is fuel related or not.
First, before you try cranking the engine over, turn the ignition key to the run position then back off without cranking the starter. What this will do is run the fuel pump and in most cases, you will be able to hear the fuel pump running. Do this 3 to 4 times before you try starting it.
If after you have circled the key a few time the engine starts normally then you now know for sure you have a fuel pressure leak down problem causing your hard start.

i wasnt going to message but i saw you reply to some others. any clues for me? i have a 99.5 silverado 1500 5.3. im having the exact same issue except when it happens that i need to do an extended crank, i then smell fuel in the cab. any clues from that? i recently put in an airtex fuel pump. thought it was that and got an ac delco. still does it.

Why not use a OEM pump, those cheap pieces of shit will just crap out in 6-12 months. But I guess that's how shops get returning customers.

Thanks alot! My 03 tahoe was doing just exactly the same, long crank.... Never have done a fuel pump until i saw this, so gave it a try and did it...took me 2 days but did it.. Works perfectly fine now...left it about 30 minutes and went over and turned the key and started right away...problem fixed.... Thanks again...

I have a 96 GMC Savana 5.7/350 in the shop with that issue. Replaced the fuel pump, crank sensor, oil pressure sensor, smoke tested for leaks and found a couple rotten vacuum lines. Ran great after fixing the vacuum leak but it will run like crap then run great and back and forth. It's fun working on vans because I can see the engine as I'm driving down the highway with the doghouse off. Thanks for the great video.

Hey there! Thanks for the video, well put together and helpful. Just wanted to give you another possible solution that worked on my 2010 5.3L. I drive on gravel roads a lot, and as it turns out, the fuel evaporate mechanism can clog with “dust”. A simple blow out with an air gun resolved my ability to fill with fuel, and immediately stopped extended crank at start! Cheap fix, cost literally nothing but an hour of time! Read a few comments to see if anyone mentioned this, hope it’s not been talked to death all ready. Thanks for the video!!!

My 08 Suburban has done it twice. It has 87K mi. It had an extended start after sitting a couple weeks. Another time it started first try, turn it off, wait a couple minutes, then it has an extended start. It has sat weeks at a time and no problem. This started like 2 weeks ago. I was thinking fuel pump is "going out". But it seems like the hardest and most expensive thing to try first. Suggestions? I am gonna check that vacuum line since i recently replaced the oil pressure sensor and i might've knocked something out of place.

I replaced my fuel pump and that fixed this issue for me! The whole pump was rusted out was losing pressure there! Definitely check this!!

@@PapaHouie take it too a shop and have them reset the computer... Mine was stuck in flex fuel mode so it thought i was running ethanol and not gas, basically flooding it in a sense. Like 50 bucks and only took 20mins...

My 2005 honda is slow to start but if I turn over the motor for a split second without starting it and then hit the key again and it fires up instantly. Is that a good test for the problem in your video? Great video 👍

My truck has 97 k on it. Gmc 2500 hd having this exact issue. I replaced egr all eight injectors the regulator line and boots. Is it possible I have a bad filter or should I just replace the pump

May I ask i have a 1996 chevy suburban 5.7 k 1500. Starts and runs like new unless its summer time. Turn it off to run in the store and come out and it won't start until the next morning,fires right up then! The fuel pressure is perfect and it has a new distributor,plugs,wires,coolent temp sensor none of wich fixed this issue. NO check engine lights on! In the winter months this problem goes away. My fuel pressure regulator is in the spider injection so when I change the FPR I might as well put in a new spider 🕷 injection system. Thank Goodness it could be worse the 98 350 Vortec engine is fairly easy to work on.

I had a bad fuel pump+weak starter. So watch out for that starter also. I knew when it started to click as it turned over the engine while starting.

Bought a vehicle like this have never changed spark plugs or wires can this also cause a long crank/hesitation?. It always eventually fires up I also have a new starter and battery.

i got a 5.7 vor and i have this problem but i’ve been letting it prime for a month or so and it’s been fine but just got the problem again even when i do. NOT ONLY that i get a lot of black smoke/concentrate that comes out my exhausts. it’s so bad that it covers the ground black any ideas?

Got a 98 vortec, fuel pressure dips to near O psi overnight and I checked it in a couple hours and was down 20 psi. Blipping the throttle fuel pressure goes up to 60 psi idles at 50 psi, changed the fuel filter no change.I thought blipping thereottle and fuel pressure rises is a good sign for regulator.haven’t pulled any plugs yet. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Appreciate the video. I’m having the same problem with my 2011 Sierra 5.3. After it finally fires up I’ve got a diff of smoke out of the exhaust. Can’t tell yet if it’s fuel or oil smoke

the 07 does not have a vacuum operated pressure regulator., pressure is 35 when you turn the key, goes to 55 after started then run fine, starts terrible

I have this problem with my 99 Chevy silverado but it was doing this only one except for a long time but recently is start being really really hard to start even if I drove it in a couple hours later go to start it and it would be hard to start and eventually turn over once it starts and runs perfect but when I turn the key on and off and try to recycle to bring the pump up you can hear the pump clicking on and off so could it still be a fuel pump issue if I hear the pump turning on and off or would it be something else I put a machine on it at Advance Auto and they said it's a code for the EGR valve but everything I've read about the EGR valve. Says it will cut of rough idea an mine runs smooth just sometimes when it sits takes forever to start an recently if it sits 4 HR hard to start

Sounds like fuel pump or pressure reg. fuel pressure gauge will need to be installed to check. and yes i would agree that the egr is not related to your starting problem.

What there not telling u is the fuel pump has a 1 way valve that holds the pressure it builds, and that is your problem.

My fuel pump was fine. It was my crankshaft position sensor. Easy fix, took me 15 minutes.

I have an 02 silverado with the exact same issues in this video, did you also? It’s not my fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel regulator. I wanted to try next my crankshaft sensor hoping this fixes it and it’s not the injectors.

took my 2003 tahoe to shop for long crank issue. came back it was fuel pump, according to the mechanics machine. on our reader we were getting an evap leak code, he did not get this code. this is the 3rd fuel pump we have put in in about 8 months or so. Got the truck back, next morning i took my child to school started up fine. come home for about an hour and take my second child to school, have the same long crank issue.... help!

Is it common for TBI injectors to leak? I have a 94 suburban with TBI. It looses pressure once the vehicle is off. I have read somewhere this is normal for TBI but can't find anything else to back that up. My suburban has to crank for extended period of time after sitting for awhile. Cycling the key on and off a few times to build up pressure does not seem to make a difference. I am getting a strong gas smell from the engine bay area but cannot find any active leaks. I was maybe thinking the injectors are leaking when the vehicle is off causing it to flood itself out. It seems if I start the vehicle with the pedal to the floor, it might help it start a little quicker.

The injectors don't leak too often but the tbi itself, i.e., the injector pod and fuel pressure regulator and fittings are notorious for leaking. Fuel pressure should be about 10-13 psi.

Hi, I have a long crank problem. But if I spray starting fluid in the TB it starts right up... But once I shut the key off on my 88 s10 blazer 4.3 with TBI in my cj7, the fuel pressure drops to zero right away. Any idea what is more likely causing the issues? Thanks for the video

My 02 Silverado has the same exact problem except it was super intermittent wouldn’t do this for days or weeks now it has become once every day to now every chance it sits for longer then an hour. I’m 100% sure It’s not my fuel pump or fuel regulator but idk how to thoroughly check fuel injectors all I have done was check for pulsating and each one pulses as the engine is on but idk how to pin point my issue. Truck starts easier when I feather the gas peddle

pull injectors, leave on the rail, the prime the engine a few times to full pressure. There should be no drops. Did you find your issue?

Hey!! Maybe you or someone else can help me. Similar but opposite. 2004 tahoe 5.3 will start up first whirl when it’s been sitting for a while. But if I run around town with warm motor and shut it off, when I come back out to crank it would take about 15 seconds to finally fire up. So since I know it’s like that, I prime it by turning key about 4 times and then it’ll start right up.

99 s10 2.2L is the opposite. Starts fine in the morning when cold but extended crank after it as set in the sun all day . Any thoughts?

Spider injectors not firing to start spray carbclener in breather and crank up and runs good until sit again, something all over again.

My 08 Escalade starts perfect invthe morning buy once its warmed up and you shut it off ot cranks really long before it starts once it starts it's fine but it cranks way to long any ideas

so what does it mean if it starts quickly whrn cold, but takes a long time to start when warmed up? also when its warmed up it hesitates to accellerate

2008 suburban mine hesitates when warm too. like today running for an hr stopped for 10 -15 and hesitated when I cranked it. later it did it again after stopping for gas. I can never replicated it when I try. new battery and starter already. Thx.

2009 suburban and it does this every so often. Sometimes it starts right up sometimes long crank for few secs. Doesn't matter time of day or length of it sitting. Ideas?

Hey mine I just replaced the pump like a couple months ago and it now has that little long cranking and I checked the fuel pressure and it was at about 48 and I took off the vacuum hose off the regulator and it went up to 60 so could it be the regulator because the fuel pump seems good or an injector???

@@sirjohnahayfalcon probably the fuel pump because I used to much Lucas fuel cleaner and I guess that’s bad I got a replacement for free but I haven’t installed it! So probably it’s the fuel pump actuator

When I lived in the mountains I had the same issue during winter. Might look into synthetic oil. I did that and it made it start much easier

What happens if you crank the key over a few times to build up pressure and it is still hard to start... Just put in a new battery and still it isnt helping, it eventually starts but takes awhile. 2001 chevy express 5.7L. It also seems if instead of me just sitting there letting it crank it starts a bit easier if i tap the key over and over for short bursts

Hey it takes long for me but when I start it and turn it off it will start right away unless I wait 2 minutes then it will do it again any idea?

I have a 2006 Silverado crew cab 5.3 and it cranks 1 time then starts at the 2nd crank runs and works good just dont know why it does that and then sometimes it starts first crank it has new ngk spark plugs and wires they told me it might be the fuel filter. Any one have the same issue?

I have the same issue on my 01 Sierra. I haven’t really trouble shooter anything, but I was told it could be the fuel filter as well. Lmk if you get this fixed and what you’re issue was!

My wife has a 02 chevy tahoe with a 5.3. We live in death valley and when the temp outside is over 100 it has a hard time starting it takes about 10-15 seconds of cranking before it starts. Temperature gets under 100 and it starts at a flick of the key. Fuel pump is a year old. Any ideas of what it could be? Thanks

i have a buddy that has a 5.3 and he has changed all fuel related stuff and all plugs wires and coils. he can crank it and it wont start but the 2nd time he cranks it it starts. and im talking right after sitting also it doesnt always do this sometimes it just starts brand new motor too roughly 3k miles any idea?

I'm having the same issue but only when the trucks warm. In the mornings it fires right up before the key is turned all the way over. Once it's warm it's a hit and miss when it long cranks then fires, but fires at 200rpm then builds up to idle (600rpm-/+)

mine starts right up in the morning. After it is hot is when I have a problem with it turning over slowly...extended crank. Any thoughts? I'm thinking its the MAF sensor, but no Engine code so far. UPDATE: Was the Fuel Pressure regulator. Five minute fix, starts up again like it was new

I have the same exact problem with my 03 avalanche. When it sits overnight, it fires up good. But if I go somewhere and let it sit for like an hour or two and try to start it, it would hesitate to start. Someone suggested to me that it could be the evap canister but I tried that a few days ago and I believe it hasn't fixed the problem. Perhaps you could try changing yours and see if it helps.

mine doesn't give codes, but sounds veeeery slow cranking and wont start. like its coughing or near dead battery but i charged it over 9 hours on a 6 amp (and battery is new from interstate). any clues?

Slow-cranking could be caused by high resistance in the starter circuit on the power or ground side, loose connections at the starter or battery. Or just a bad starter. You would have to check how many amps the starter is pulling when cranking.

Have a 2007 Silverado 1500 4.3 vortec. Has hard start issue. Have already replaced fuel pump, spider injectors, spark plugs and wires, rotor/distrib.. still has hard start issue.. once started, I can turn off and back on immediately. But if sits for about 5-10min, goes back to hard start, the mechanics that have done the work, are at a loss at this point.. anybody have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!!!

gotta check all the sensors. ECT, TPS, crank sensor, ignition issues, maybe injector harness, purge slightly open, vacuum leak

My 2002 Silverado with 5.3 L engine suddenly requires 2 cranks to start. I checked the fuel pressure with the return line open and blocked. Blocked the pressure exceeds 60 psi. Open it makes about 55 and running around 44 to 48. I did notice that it is not holding fuel pressure. It almost immediately drops to about 30 as soon as I shut off the key. What is the best way to determine if the leak down is injector or faulty pump. The truck has 285000 miles on it and is on its 4th fuel pump. The original lasted around 170000 miles. When the repair shop changed it they used a Carter fuel pump. It was defective and only lasted about 6 weeks. The second they installed at no charge lasted about 50000 miles. I changed that one (had time) and used another Carter because the wiring terminals had been changed by the shop.

Question. I have extended cranking on my 04 Tahoe every morning when the fuel tank is below 1/4. But if I keep the gas tank above 1/4 I don’t have extended cranking in the mornings. I’m guessing I need a new fuel pump??

Yep. The sock is probably clogged more towards the bottom of the tank
