Long Crank, Pull the Tank! Ford 350 5.4 Fuel Pressure 

Just wanted to tell you Ray. You gave me the confidence to pull my dash out of a 2004 Dodge Dakota to replace the heater core but while I was there, I went ahead and changed evaporator core and the blower, So I wouldn't have to do it again. I did it because you said that's the best thing to do when you pull those , so thank you very much😢

An access panel in the floor would make this soo much easier to change the pump unit.🤦🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️😂😂

I had a 92 3/4 ton Suburban. When replacing it's fuel pump, I thought the tank was nearly empty (gauge was off) turned out to be half full. The tank slid off the floor jack I had it strapped to, in a wooden cradle and fuel poured all over the floor, and caught a shoplight laying near it Boom!!! Whole garage went up. Garage and the truck were a total loss.

I have changed 3-4 fuel pumps and every one was on a full tank of fuel. Crazy!!

Y would you not replace the old hoses while the tank was out?

I never did see Ray reconnect the line that tore and had to be cut off.

Ray, they make truck frame pads for lifts like that. they have a square pad and u shaped mount that allows you to position a pad on the frame rail with no chance of it slipping off. ill be honest, i would not want to be under that truck with the pads that close to the endge of the frame rail. a small invesement to add to the tools you have in your shop. its not worth the risk to use the wrong lift pad for trucks intended for cars.

I was off when this happened the guy I worked with in my bay was lifting a frontier and the rear right foot slid out because he didn't lift it right my buddy sent me a pic it was bad

Why not just cut the hoses? Look dry or rotten. Easy to replace e a few feet of new hose$

Diagnostic of the issue was quick and spot on. I'm not critical of your work now, so don't hate on me, but those clamps looked crusty, I would have replaced em. They're cheap and failure would be bad. But, only if I were doing it to my own vehicle. BTW, The wife unit is such a sport, remember you guys,Valentines Day. ❤

Hey Ray 👋. I was wondering if you ever considered getting a Drive-On lift 🤔. That sure would make working on these Biger vehicles easier, and safer.

The clamps face that direction because the tank/hoses/clamps were all installed before the body went onto the frame at the factory. The workers would be working from the "top" rather than under it, so they put them on in the direction easiest for them to quickly assemble the module.

Anyone old as dirt like me remember when there were no disposable gloves, and GoJo made a fortune ? Does my heart good to see greasy, dirty mechanic's hands!

On a serious note though ,AND I MIGHT BE WRONG HERE ,but I have been watching for a while, and that particular lift is starting to raise odd, notice one side going up or down faster than the other, IS IT possible that the bearings in the pulley at the top are going out, that the cables ride on?? I was watching another YT video and he had that happen, and not a good scene if that would let go, I might be crying the sky is falling, but I had a crazy thing happen a LONG time ago with a lift a old hyd- air lift, and a 2 post cable screw up over 50 yrs ago, something you might check on and NOT have happen, I still remember that yet!!...

Ok. You had the tank out... Why did you not replace all the hoses and clamps when you could prevent problems down the road for your client? Nice diagnostic skills but sometimes you miss the obvious preventive/proactive solutions. Just saying.

That filler neck/vent hose both look horrible, you'd think replacing them would be prudent.

Out of curiosity, why not replace the hoses while you're there? They looked nasty and gummy. Will they last much longer? Your hands look like you were in a coal mine😂

Nothing like having the right equipment to make a job smooth and easy! I had to drop the tank on my 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7 with a floor jack, some lumber, and threaded rod with nuts where the bolts go 😂

Most likely all of the clamps point upward because all of these parts were attached to the frame before the body was installed.

A relatively simple, straight forward, fuel pump replacement. The diag and confirmation is always of interest. That combined with previous experience with similar complaints/failures on the fuel system does make the complete repair. That trans jack with those adapters does make for fuel tank R&R much safer, especially with fuel in it - like this one's half tank. Love getting Lauren into the video, she's such a good sport. Puts up with Ray's goofing around. She's a keeper. 😊

TEN YEARS AGO I had the same problem on my 1997 ford aerostar.TWENTY DOLLAR INLINE CHECK VALVE REPAIR KIT FIXED IT. one half hour job.Going on eleven years

I think, when pumping gas, I would know long before the 30 gal mark that I had a leak.

If the fuel drains back when the engine is warm, why will it start if you just let it sit until the engine is cold? my truck have a bad check valve but it was a long crank when cold then fine all day.

Regarding the van doing it when it’s been off minutes but not when it’s been off overnight: My van (2000 Pontiac Montana) behaves the exact same way: never a long start when cold starting… only when it’s been off minutes (not hours). I think it’s related to the crappy and VERY LOUD fuel pump the shop installed when I first got it.

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. Went to Costco for fuel and some things around the house. Came back out to find the fuel pump had decided to quit with a full tank of gas. Had it towed to a shop in town and picked it up with 1/4 tank showing. 20ish gallons went somewhere. I normally do my own wrenching, but dropping a tank with 26 gallons of fuel is more work than I want to do in the driveway.

Ray get you some liquid Glove, you rub it in, on your hands, let dry. It doesn't come off your hands, unless you get into water but grease and oil doesn't stick to your hands till you wash them when you want, it is a soap based , water soluble type of stuff.

A little bit of kroil and little bit of elbow grease and the client would not have had to pay for new straps, they were in good shape

An "Embarrassing" Service Call? A better word I would think of would be EXPENSIVE!! After removing the Vehicle, paying for the Hazardous Material Clean Up, and the additional time you had connecting the Fill Tube, that had to cost you a FORTUNE!! Perhaps you noticed I did not mention the 30 Gallons of Fuel that the customer pumped all over the Parking Lot, that said customer had to expect you to pay for, that's cause any fool that pumps that much gas all over the parking lot without noticing it, and taking IMMEDIATE Corrective Action, deserves to pay for 2 Tanks of Gas. Unbelievable !!

My 2010 F350 had the goofiest problem. For safety, the 2010 & on Fords has the fuel pump kick on & the fuel pressure sensor looks for psi. If no PSI is read, the drivetrain computer assumes a leak & shuts off the pump. So it is damned hard to tshoot the pump when t keeps shutting off like that. Oh, sure I coulda bought a diag computer like you got but, for just this 1 problem? I took it to the dealer. !

The notion that you have to drop the tank to change a fuel pump is ASSININE! I had this issue on my old car, a '97 Ford Aerostar. Longer and longer crank times = failing fuel pump. OK, but I soon found out that you cannot open a hatch in the floor and then access the top of the tank, oh no, can't have that! That might cost Ford $1.50 per vehicle.... My '01 Subaru Outback LL Bean has exactly that, a hatch in the floor so that you can easily access the fuel pump. It had the long crank issue and it was getting worse, so I bought a new OEM pump assembly [not just the motor, the whole assembly] on eBay for $247 and installed it myself. Took about an hour... The Aerostar? I took it to a "shop" nearby and they dropped the tank and installed a new pump for $400. That night I drove it to work, and got half way there when it stalled. I wound up missing my jumpseat and a 6 pay hour trip that next day. What was wrong with the van? They drained the fuel, replaced the pump with the level float JAMMED and never put fuel back in the tank. Thus the tank registered full when it was empty! Missing that 6 pay hour trip cost me over $1400, on top of the $400 that I spent on the repair. I SHOULD have taken them to small claims court over that since they admitted that they screwed up, but I just let the dead canine lay where it fell and chalked it up to the stupidity of not doing things MYSELF. I doubt Ray would have made that silly mistake. But really, this is an example of poor design. Great video!

Why would you handle a brand new fuel pump with filthy caked up grimy hands?! You couldn't wear gloves for this job? Then switch them out with clean ones to handle the pump? Must be your first day on the job because that's such a lazy rookie move. UHGG!!!

What is the difference between the fuel pump and the fuel pump module?

Stuck in stop and go traffic and it was about 90F outside. The car in front of me was blowing VAPE SMOKE out the sunroof. The light wind would blow that huge cloud of "Pink Bubble Gum" right at my head and I had no where to go. I passed the guy on the shoulder.

I've experienced that "Murphy's Law of Fuel Pumps" personally. We used to have a '99 Astro AWD (wife unit vehicle), and when the fuel pump died it was less than 15 miles after my wife had filled the tank. What made it even worse was that it was a conversion minivan including all of the skirting around the perimeter that ate up 4-5" of height to crawl under. That thing sucked to work on even when it could be driven up onto ramps.
