No kidding! I actually heard a hair stylist tell her aged client that hair stops growing after 50....as she was doing the woman's roots and I sat there with hair past my waist.
@@plculverhe must be Insane, I am way past 50 and have beautiful, healthy hair to my waist and get compliments on my hair all the time, and I don’t look like a grandma either😃
I just want to say THANK YOU for not portraying hairstyles for over 50, as if they were a 80 year old!!! I have seen so many videos like that! So many ladies look fabulous over 50!!
GenX has completely changed the narrative of what 50 is. We don’t look like our moms or grandmas. We are young at heart and want to look like we feel. I’ll never cut my hair.
I totally agree with your video. I have been cutting my own hair since I was a teen and now at 56... I have discovered that I can totally still enjoy my long hair. It is very thick and even though I also color it, it is extremely healthy. Very long, layers, bangs and styled curls or waves depending on my mood. Loving it!!!❤
@justinhickox Actually, to be very honest with you. My most favorite style would be untamed loose curls as they express a feeling of freedom and curls to go away from the face as opposed to towards. I find it looks way more youthful and fun. I only sometimes straighten to break any routine. I think that hair, from an artist's point of view, is a way to fully demonstrate our personal energy. For example, I am extremely creative, resourceful, and playful. I so I allow my hair to grow, stay loose, I curl it then allow it to play around me.
I get my hair thinned out because it’s also super thick and I don’t like it so I always get it thinned out and I tried those shearing scissors that thin out but they’re a little harder to work with so I get a professionally done
I would love to see more videos with curly/wavy hair. There are so many of us and until recently, I kept thinking I had “frizzy hair” only to find out it is wavy and have been fighting my hair and getting the completely wrong hair cuts as well as not putting in the correct product (and amount). Most videos are for those with straight or “controlled” hair when that is not representative to a big chunk of us. But love your videos and lots of amazing tips. Thanks a bunch :)
I’ve done everything Justin has suggested a woman my age do. I stopped highlighting my hair, I went to a darker color, I cut my hair into layers, and I wear bangs. Everyone tells me I look great and so much younger! Justin knows what he is talking about!
I cut my fringe a bit shorter and WOW, what a difference. I’m 53 with long hair that is often in updo’s. The fringe added that needed touch of “something” and my husband said it brings out my eyes.
@@stephaniesteed7653 I wear mine up in a high bun most days, so I understand what you mean. But it’s waist length, healthy and I can roll it/pin it up in a way that makes it shorter if I ever start to think of cutting it. I am giving myself a trim (about 10cm) today. I keep sitting on it or getting it stuck behind me while driving if it’s down! Rather rude! 😂😂
63 here. I loved this video and your recommendations! So many others say to keep our hair shorter rather than longer. So THANK YOU! And I hope you didn't let those trees get the best of you! ;)
Wow, those ladies with very long curly hair 😍so beautiful! I’ve recently got my hair cut and added bangs…sadly I didn’t know my bangs will curl, wave and bend as much as they do! They literally have a mind of their own 😂 Although I’m told that bangs make me look younger, I’m not committed to making them look good and styling them every day. Needless to say I’m growing out my bangs 😆😬
Ironically, this is exactly what I have done (#4) to my hair (well, really my hairdresser did it!) and I love it! It really represents my true style. I used to have a lot of hair, but being on immunosuppressants has resulted in hair loss, so the layering has given me the appearance of having more hair than I do.
That's awesome! I love hearing this! It's crazy how adding layers can make hair appear thicker right! Many people suffering from hair loss are sure that layering will make it look thinner, but that's not always true at all. So glad you took that step and got great results!
I am 52 and needed a tip for my mid back length curly/wavy hair. Thank you! Thanks for making me feel like I'm still relevant, as opposed to "over the hill"
Yes yes! I agree, I have a ton of layers on my thick wavy, curly hair that probably wouldn’t work so well if my hair was straight. It also encourages curl (I’m not super coily , more loose curls mixed with waves) and I love volume so the layers kinda help me bring volume and width right to where I want it. It’s kinda the only hairstyle I can do although I just recently cut off about 5 inches in length and made it just touch my shoulders. Love your videos and I love how you use your beautiful wife as a model. 🥰
Thank you! I love that you agree. It's always nice to hear that from folks. I bet it looks great at shoulder length. Thank you for the support on the videos and I'll make sure to tell Dionna you said that...she always loves hearing it!
Thank you for a curly hair tip!! I identify with the longer it gets the wider it gets and I look weird because I am petite. Thanks for great tips and I'm ready to see some more views that "don't suck!"
Thank you for mentioning bangs in this video. I have my hair like the first style, only not as long. I love having bangs, it does make a big difference for me.
You’re so welcome! I’m glad you love them! Bangs are a fantastic way to add interest to a cut without having to change the rest of the haircut. What style of bangs do you love most?
AAAAAHHHHHH! Justin! I'm on my 3 day countdown to my hair color and cut/trim confusion. This helped as I love my hair curly, or wavy or with "bend". This helped so much and I'm keeping it long with layers! And yes, you need to go get that firewood cut so you two can enjoy some spiced apple cider by the fire!🔥
Hey Lori! So great to see you! I'm SO glad this helped! Can't wait to hear how everything turns out. Oh...and haha, you think I'm cool enough to slam an axe into wood and NOT cut off a leg in the process???? Yeah, we have a gas fireplace! LMAO! J/K...kinda. I did used to chop wood as a kid but it's been a LONG time. Apple cider sounds GOOD! Here's my question.....Eggnog or Apple Cider?
@@justinhickox "very interesting" as somehow that comes out in my head as an accent from nowhere. LOL! I'd have to say apple cider as I have never had eggnog. Is it a must try? But I must say that I love Swedish coffee with egg!!
@@justinhickox sorry for the late reply! I really like #3 and #4. I have super flat hair but not thin. I have always been drawn to layers. My current stylist has been given me face framing layers, but with being 54, I’m finding my current hair style is dragging me down. I love the length - 2” past my shoulders. Now I know what to ask for… strong layers! 😊 Could you do a future video on the “reversing grey” dye free shampoos that are all the rage? Liquid and bars. I was curious if your professional opinion on them. Thank You so much for your videos!
Great options! I have long thick hair with only a few grays (I'm 56 and genetics help keep away gray hair until very late in life) and love seeing the options you gave. Right now I color my hair every 6-8 weeks and have the layered look (no bangs as I have very wavy hair and they would look weird) .
Love your videos! Would like to see something on how to handle receding hairlines. My hair is straight, fine and thinning. (I have hypothyroidism which doesn’t help, I am on medication). Main concern is hairline. I rival you and your hairline! Looks great on a man, not so much on a woman…..keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! That's a great question! I actually have a video I'm going to be working on that will address that as well as other things around the thin hair space!
@@justinhickox Same Q! I have about 1/100th of the hair as any of the models in your pics, and it has never grown past my shoulders. I know a more flattering style would help though. Will you be cutting hair in person anytime soon?
Hypothyroidism is a hair thing, too. I have it. My hair fell out. It is thicker growing out but uneven. Protein helps. Yogurt with 15 grams of protein with meals helped me.
Yep, I’m 60 with very long, thick, wavy-curly hair, and I keep mine very layered - do it myself. Also have an oval perimeter instead of the perfectly level look I prefer, which also helps prevent the Rosanne Rosannadanna triangle head!
Loving this a lot! My hair, my slight layers & bangs! Taking this all in for my fine/thin hair @ my older age!! Thanks!😁💯👍💞 I'm learning a great deal from your site!!
Love your videos! Your expertise is very impressive! Thank you for doing the videos. I love the cut and style Jacqueline Smith is wearing. Can you tell us how to do that cut?
@@justinhickox I have an amazing stylist specifically for curly girls, Spiral Evolution in Colorado Springs. I've had an amazing shag cut for many years. I get many compliments on my hair. I keep wondering if I should change my style. But to what? This is the best my hair has ever been!
@@jenn8179 nice! I love hearing about great salons! Stoked you found one and the right stylist for your hair!!! I always say change is growth BUT, if you love your hair, don’t try to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. When you get bored with your hair, or it stops working for you…THAT, I find, is the ideal time to switch things up.
Hi Justine. Love all your videos🥰. I love how you take the time and share the story and connect with your audience. I wish more and more stylists have your passion, creativity, depth and wisdom and not just doing the same things which they have learned at school. It's so refreshing to see a hairstylist who not only has an incredible skills but also a genuine personality that shines through in your videos. Keep up the fantastic work🤩.
Completely agree with you. Thanks for the curly 'do. My ringlets appreciate it. I love your defensive justification for eating all the things around the holidays. Freaking adorable!
I definitely vibe with style #5! I will have to have it done at my next hair appointment! I have fairly long, silver hair that's naturally curly. Last time I got a trim I didn't get layers for some dumb reason and I noticed a huge difference in how my hair looked! For me layers are a must!! My age is 51 btw....
Great question. The overall premise is the same for 1 and 2 (which now I realize would have been great to mention in the. Video), although the last style is tailored a bit more to your curl pattern than 3/4. With that said, I want to make more curly hair content in the future for sure!
Love your videos for more mature women and you are so right about the curly girls having more layers, if I don't have lots of layers I get that triangle shape you were talking about and it's not flattering to say the least! lol
Great video. After listening to you about layering, I think my hair is over layered in the back. I’ve been wanting a new style. I’m thinning on top a bit and I’m kind of lost on how to best get more volume there. I really wish I could get a consultation from a professional
I would really appreciate a video on HOW to style bangs. They always look super cute when I leave the hair stylist but I have a hard time achieving the same look when at home.
@@justinhickox I appreciated you showing the layers on wavy or textured hair. That's what mine resembles when it is long, even if I blow it out to be rather straight to begin with. Also, having enough layering towards the top (without being too short or disconnected) helps keep my volume from being too flat. (I guess it's the shape of my head and hairline.)
Agree, waves are timeless, just like the Bob!!!…great, helpful video!!!…I colored my hair, Justin!!!!…I was so bored with the grey, and it is not easy to care for!🤣🤣..I broke my pelvic bone in two places in April, a walker and grey hair helped me make my choice to color, too!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣thanks for another informative video, you lumberjack!!!!🤣🤣🤣much love and appreciation to you and Dionna!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜#OGCommunityRockstar
Hey Linda! SO sorry to hear about your Pelvis! I hope you're healing up fast! Damn, that must be tough. You're strong though, so it's probably nothing for you! How exciting you colored your hair! Are you loving it???
@@justinhickox I am still going for PT 3 times a week, but almost healed!!!..I ditched that walker after 3 weeks!🤣🤣🤣🤣yes, I am loving my hair!!..it is growing more, too!..wooohooo!…it’s been a long journey healing, but, we do what we have to do!…I hope you are doing great!!!!!💜
I have a fairy simple shag w kind of spikey eyebrow length fringe bangs. Maintenance is so minimal and I get compliments all the time. I do air dry ( maybe blow bangs a bit ) and then twist in loose bun while I sleep wake up and have salon hair!
So glad you came around compared to your video a month ago. I read the so many comments of people who were offended and suppose you did too. Thanks for the 180!
Thank you! I have super fine baby hair. My hair stylist says that I have a little pea head. I'm well over 50, thanks to great genes I have no sparkly hairs yet, and I'm so not ready to go short. Our solution: a perm with layers! It gives me the curl and volume I otherwise would never have.
I have better , longer hair in my 50's than I wish I had in my 20's, I braid my long hair and keep it in a pony tail I want a style that will support curly or wavy with bangs so this video gave me some ideas .
Have you got a video of curly/wavy hair for gals over 60?? I'm 62 this year and have naturally curly hair. I've always done a heavy layered look because when it curls the waves are more in conrol
73 with thinning hair. Always had lots of thin hair but now my volume is much less. Recently switched to a chin length cut without layers. I wash twice a week and condition the ends but add volume mousse to the roots. Face with good cheekbones, high forehead, long narrow shape. Always wore my hair shoulder length until recently. I like your channel and suggestions.
I just love your videos! I have watched each and every one more than a couple times but that has resulted in me being so confused. I have not had a haircut since February of 2021 because I just don't know what to do with it. At 68 I find myself with long scraggly hair with no body nor shape. It doesn't help that my whole face has migrated toward my waistline and I have an oxygen hose in my nose but I love to watch your videos!
I have naturally thick long curly hair and noticed that most hair style professionals are not choosing to become experts in cutting curly hair as I met a lady who chose to master cutting and styling curly hair in Dayton Ohio Amazing
Thank you for encouraging us older ladies to keep our long hair but with the most flattering styles. My mom was a hairdresser and practiced on me. My hair was always short. I promised myself I would keep my hair long later in life. I shudder when I see ladies with haircuts like men! Sorry that’s just me.
Which one of these is best for women who do not “style” hair or who know nothing about what to do with tools, product, etc? I don’t have an in-home stylist to do my hair every day, so…🤷🏻♀️
I'm 54 and my hair is fairly long - a few inches below my collarbone. I'd love to try bangs, but historically my hair doesn't lay right for bangs. Additionally, my hair is a bit thin. I'm wondering which of these styles would work best, and also wonder how to get bangs that ROCK! Any suggestions? Thank you.
Great question! The bangs would be determined by your hair texture, hairline, and face shape. It’s tough to say which banks you would rock the best without being able to see all of those things. In the past, if you haven’t loved bangs, maybe just some sides, swept longer bangs That are more like a very short front layer than straight across bangs. That might be worth giving it a shot if you haven’t already tried that. Does that make sense?
@lisaadamsrenegademystic I know exactly what you mean. I love the long layered with bangs, but I just have the long layered part. It's really disappointing because I have a long face, but I have a wicked cowlick that parts the bangs right above my left eyebrow. That sucker will not be tamed, so I would be stuck walking around with bangs split ( ) on my forhead. Not cute! 😉
@@crisnemitz1606 Ugh - yeah. I have a widow's peak and bangs just wont hang right. I wonder if they would if they were heavier? It's a shame because I'd like to make a change while still keeping with the long layers.
@@lisaadamsrenegademystic I know. I was thinking of trying the curtain bang style so I could actually take advantage of my ( ), but even my longer face framing layers drive me crazy when it falls in my face. I have a feeling curtain bangs would drive me nuts.
Since my nearly-straight hair began turning gray, it’s become very wavy, even curly underneath. I’m thinking of adding a good amount of layering to help bring out the curl, the top layers are the straightest. My one-length cut just looks a bit like a pyramid shape, full at the bottom, but flat and thin on top. The texture looks like I used a crimping iron, but very badly.
