Compression socks are not only for swelling, they are also to decrease chances of developing blood clots. If you do not wear, you should be moving your legs around. One suggestion I have seen is, from time to time, to do the motion of the alphabet with your legs while sitting.
you can also take aspirin few hours before your flight as it also helps against the blood clots (if you are fine with aspirin that is, for my father it often causes nose bleed so this tip is not for everyone)
I had a DVT below my left knee several years ago and have had to wear compression socks since. Believe me it is an experience to avoid so long flights it's a good idea for sure. DVT's can be fatal.
The joys of being a shift worker. I’m used to just napping, I’m used to sleeping during the day, during the night, and eating basically whenever. In 18 years of international travel I think I’ve had jet lag once or twice. 😁🇦🇺
I always try to book with an airline that operates one of the newer aircrafts (A380, A350, B787) that have lower cabin altitude. I feel so much better after a long-haul flight in one of those. Less noise, more oxygen, higher humidity levels make it much more comfortable. Also, I recently flew from London to Canada and used this app called Timeshifter that helps you adjust your body clock and avoid jet lag. It basically tells you when to get natural light / when to go to bed the days before&after your flights, I found it pretty useful. I had no jet leg both ways from west coast Canada (8hr time difference with London)…
Great tips! Compress socks don’t just help with swelling. Most importantly, they help prevent clots from forming in the blood pooling in one’s lower extremities. I recommend them 100%! You always remove once you arrive at your destination.Leg pumps and ankle rolls, at the minimum, also help with clot prophylaxis Staying hydrated is crucial! Thanks, again! ✈️✈️✈️
Regarding mint consumption. We bought mints in the Netherlands (called “S-mints”) and were merrily eating them. Then we both developed very disturbing GI symptoms. Realized then that they were loaded with sugar alcohol as a sweetener. Uh oh. This substance can be a potent laxative if consumed in enough quantity. So if flying, I would avoid any sugar-free mints containing sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol, anything with “ol” endings) as these both create a lot of intestinal gas, and if enough are eaten, diarrhea. Definitely NOT good on a plane!
Compression socks are a must for me whether traveling 1 hour or 11 hours. I like to be able to see my ankles at the end of the trip. :) I am not one of those people who can sleep anywhere so I make sure to bring a lot of things to do and make use of the movies and shows on the flight. I always say I love traveling but I hate getting there. My advice is bring snacks and more snacks and more. It's ok to have leftovers but I've found myself starving on more than one occasion because I forget to factor in the time between landing at arriving at my hotel at my destination. It's also nice to have snacks in the room so you can take them with you while you go out and about. So I say bring the entire pantry (not really but....) and nothing fragrant. OMG... people eating their tuna sandwiches. PLEASE NO. That's all I've got. I want to travel now. Next stop Poland in April 2025! Wish it were a direct flight leaving from California but no. It leaves from NYC so I have to get there first. Ah well... POLAND!! I'm so excited.! It's been on my list forever.
Hahah eugh not the tuna sandwiches 😩😩 thanks for sharing such a thoughtful comment!! Poland is super high on my list as well :) you must be sooo looking forward to it!
@@HappytoWander I really am looking forward to it! It’s supposed to be beautiful. Looking forward to Warsaw, Krakow, and Gdańsk. There are some other small towns in there as well. Of course there is the obvious solemn place I will visit but I feel it’s important.
Helpful! Couple things I'd like to add (from experience! I travel from Mainland USA to S.E. Asia frequently. That entails a minimum of one 12-14 hour flight!) First, power banks - keep them on you, not in your checked baggage! Also, in USA, anyway, "Power banks must have a capacity of 100 watt-hours (Wh) or less, or 20,000 milliamp-hours (mAh) or less." Anything higher requires permission. Secondly, compression socks. I swear by them, but I'm on my second couple pairs. I finally ASKED about the amount of compression and, as it turns out, many socks on the market are TOO tight! I got some that have variable pressure, depending on what part of the leg/foot they're on. They are knee-highs, of course.
I can't say enough about the usefulness of a jacket with deep inner pockets. So far I have found this with lightweight down jackets and its a fantastic plus. Also, for places with currency notes on the large side a flat wallet that does not fold and is about 7 inches long seems to work wonders, and it fits nicely in that jacket.
I'm a sweatpants, tee, and hoodie flyer myself. Also (shhh!), I may avoid underpants, but, if not, baggy all-cotton boxers. (and don't believe anyone telling you that "dressing for success" will enhance your chances of getting an upgrade! It doesn't!)
I wore compression socks to/from Milan and to London. I didn't wear them coming back from London because it was a distant brand and it was cutting off my circulation (minor details 😉) so instead I just got up like four or five times to stretch, go to the bathroom, and walk around. I was fine doing that. I do tend to get swollen calves, ankles and feet from sitting too long. Harder to get up during a red eye but coming home it was a daytime flight.
Great tips! I have watched so many videos with travel tips but found them so repetitive. I worked as a flight attendant for 3 years, and was able to grab a few new tips from this one. Thanks!
I was once on a long haul flight where the entertainment system literally didn’t work. You also never know whether you’ll like whatever entertainment happens to be available.
They say we swell when we fly due to cabin pressure so that’s possible why you felt the need to pee more when in leggings. Another tip I saw is to start hydration (ensuring you get all 8 glasses of water) a good 48 hours before your flight that way if it lapses a little while flying etc it’s not as big of a deal.
Oh that’s probably it!! I’ve learned my lesson though - no more leggings haha. But ooh hydrating well before definitely sounds like a great idea. I’ll have to give that a go!
i got a little silicone band that I can attach to both ends of my airpods & have it around my neck, so I don't lose them when they fall off :D I prefer the earbuds for flights because I like to lean against the wall/my pillow.
Excellent tips ... considering others around you makes our world a better place! I use a belt bag specifically for plane necessities like eye drops, gum, kleenex, cough drops, etc..... it is so much better than rooting around in the dark in your personal item bag disturbing everyone.
Going on my first ever long haul flight soon . I tend to have swollen feet when flying so ill definitely buy some compression socks . Thanks so much for your tips. Much appreciated. 💕
If I can work it in time wise, I find that doing a work out of 45 minutes or longer before I shower and head to the airport (I use a walk at home DVD) makes me much more comfortable on a long haul flight. Walking briskly around the airport helps also. It makes the prolonged period of inactivity less uncomfortable.
I have recently been finding myself next to “spreaders”. The person next to me tucking a foot under the seat in front of me because their under seat bag doesn’t leave them any room.
I just got back from Prague had a amazing trip I upgraded my seat to Premium Economy Plus going and Polaris Business class coming back it was amazing the Service the leg space being able to recline seat all the way down to lay flat so mich more comfortable I always fly Economy but on International flights its to long to crammped my knees hurt but the upgrades, are expensive I had points😊
Ooh nice!!! I still haven’t done long haul business class or premium economy because I know I won’t be able to go back to regular economy after that hahah. Holding off as long as I’m able to because it CAN be so pricey… but yes also hoarding points in the meantime. Glad to hear you had a good experience on your trip!!
@@HappytoWander You are right about not being able to go back to economy lol! I've done a few long-haul business flights and I'm absolutely dreading any economy flights now, even the short ones that are only a few hours long. But I have to do a long-haul economy soon so that's why I'm watching your video haha
I agree about checking out seat maps. I really do appreciate that Air Canada shows you both the map and the availability before you fly. When there are multiple flight options for the route that day, it helps me to choose. I’m a devoted aisle seat traveller as I don’t sleep on the plane. It used to be too that you could look up the seat pitch for each area of the plane. Often the rows in the middle had 1-2” more than those on the sides. But I’m not sure if that’s true anymore?
On our last trip back from Europe we booked the seats behind the plus on air transit on line it was a upgrade for more leg room upgrade ,what a joke when the people in front reclined the seats all the leg room disappeared due to coming far back,so much for more leg room we paid extra for.
I work night shift. i dont get jet lags hehehe. I dont fly economy for long haul flights as well. Dont fly economy, fly premium or business, save your points or money. Its worth it.
Compression socks are a must for anyone who is prone to blood clots - my husband didn't end up putting his on (like he normally does) for one of our flights and low and behold, developed a clot and had to have it surgically removed!
It's kind of annoying that the front row is where all the families and newborns go, I have very long legs so legroom seats are a nonnegotiable, and you guessed it, the baby seats are always the legroom seats. I never pick the middle one bc I'm not a monster but god, the amount of nasty stares new families give my tall, childless self when they don't have the whole row to themselves😅
Ahh that sounds like such a pain!! Sometimes I forget that my short legs are a perk when it comes to flying economy lol. I’d like to think if you explained your situation to these parents then they would be understanding of it, but who knows hahah people can be SO strange.
@@HappytoWander Of course I never complain in the moment! I know flying with kids and babies can be stressful, but I don't always get kindness back. It is what it is, though, and it's a finite amount of time, so it's fine!
Maybe you should try choosing your seat earlier, like when check in opens. Or choose to book your seat when booking the flight. That way you’ll get to sit exactly where you want.
@lynnconroy8 I always pick my seat early? I also always choose aisle seats to mitigate how much I encroach on their baby space. Weird assumptions being made here. Like, I'm annoyed that the baby seat and legroom seats are the same, not that I didn't get the seat I wanted?
Hi, I just got my bag tagged. A month before I bought the tickets to London, I asked at the Delta counter what was allowed and where are there sizers for carryon allotments. They said that as long as it was under 22lbs, my carryon, we can have a free carryon and a personal. They were tagging everyone and the overhead bag compartments were empty. Everyone was mad, but it didn’t mater with Delta, they have always been bi-polar, all the more reason to not fly with them!
For a long time, as the price of Chanel increased, I no longer thought I could afford it. I think I would be happy to have the LYXBAG as my travel bag and not have to take care of it. By the way, I'm sure no one will have a hard time telling the difference. Thanks for the comparison.
FWY Always check to make sure the over the counter medicine you are bringing isn’t illegal in the country you are visiting. For instance in Japan is not legal to bring some of the allergy medicine we take in the US like “Claritin D”
In general, if you're bringing prescription medication, better check the rules of the countries you'll be entering! Many require some "jumping through hoops" to bring even prescription medication in!
I’m never ever reclining my seat bc I worry about the person behind me. But if I’m on a flight for 14 hours (I’m going to Australia in Jan) I’m reclining regardless if it’s a short or tall person behind me 😅
Hmm 12 flight that’s crazy, imagine coming from Adelaide Australia trying to get to the other side of the world! Adelaide to Dublin 13hrs45min then 7hr35min!😭
You are right, I fly from Brisbane Australia to Manchester or to Warsaw .. have also families there…. Looking forward to my next flight early next year, but not so much the flights 😀😀🙋♀️
I always check now I have everything in my bag when I leave . One time I didn’t realise my purse fell out . Went to check into hotel had no id had to go all the way back to airport and lucky it got handed in .
Would depend a lot on where you’re going but I have a general winter packing video here (for Europe) that might help get you started :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-icmZEg73doI.htmlsi=PhCk9tWqmpJ1NlQd
I used to travel with similar ones before I switched to airpods, you can just put them to the tray for the security like you would with your belt, phone or anything that is in the pockets. Having them around your neck would probably not be allowed as it would trigger the detector.
Honestly, our government has no idea how people are suffering these days. Imuch feel sorry for disabled people who don't get the help they deserve. All thanks to Miss Lily Brian, imagine investing $1000 and receiving $5700 in a few days..
