Long Island - We love it, we hate it, we are all too familiar with it. But no matter how many times you've sat in traffic on the Southern State Parkway, you may have never noticed some piece's of Long Island's history hiding right in plain sight.
Installment 2 of this Docu-Series explains the untold past of Long Island's parkway system.

We can trace my family back to some of the founders of Huntington, miller place, setauket and port Jefferson. One of my relatives owned a hotel where you could eat and get your wagon and horse taken care of. George Washington stayed there and now it’s still there and supposed haunted by my family member and is on a tour route. They also were ship builders in port Jefferson. So much more cool stuff.

For decades there was a sign at Hempstead tpke when you get onto the 135 saying "South to Wantagh" and "North to Oyster Bay." I guess the D.O.T. stayed optimistic about the completion of this expressway for a while. I knew the north / south terminus was supposed to say Syosset and Seaford. It has finally been corrected.

@DTD110865 2 года назад
@@DMETS519 Too bad. It should've actually gone south to Wantagh (via the Parkway) and north through Oyster Bay (towards the Bayville-Rye Bridge).

So cool in how much history Long Island has, i live in glen cove and have recently hated how far we are from everything and how it’s a one way in and out basically that takes so long, wish there was a way to get us to other places faster

I left long island 16 years ago and leaving that expensive overcrowded, cold, stress filled nightmare of an island has been such a wonderful liberating experience! now I drive beautiful winding scenic country roads in the idyllic state of North Carolina! no tolls, no litter, no salted roads, no traffic jams! all you suckers who still live there are paying taxes through the nose, just so you can wait on line to go to a crowded beach! I guess ignorance is bliss!

I grew up in Syosset, and went sledding on the hills of dirt at the end of my block, before the LIE went in. I've always preferred the Northern State Parkway, with its more relaxing feel. Too bad the service stations are no longer in operation. Their design complemented the roadway. I'm so glad the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway was never completed. When I see the trace of where it would have run, I see how many neighborhoods would have been irrevocably destroyed, For years I traveled along Convent Road, Berry Hill Road, Split Rock Road, and many others along its proposed route.

Awesome series. I just got started on episode two. I just want to point out a minor error regarding that guard rail by hempstead lake. It is not from the old parkway route. They didn’t use those stamped steel rails on wood posts until sometime in the late 1980’s. The old parkway rails were wood covering on each side of a steel braided cable behind them. Before that was just a raised concrete curb, like could be seen as the center divider on the merge of the grand central into the interboro west of the kew gardens interchange, which finally got replaced in the early 90’s. Your series is excellent. Keep it up.

I love hidden history like this and thinking about the alternative history if it was to exist. Bethpage State Parkway extension is a good example where the southern expansion would been the Massapequa Preserve (once Massapequa State Park) and the northern expansion along the Trailview State Parkway/Cold Spring Harbor and area of NY state land in Lloyd Harbor to the Caumsett State Park to be called the Caumsett State Parkway once north of the Northern State Parkway. Also the I-495 Eastern expansion to RI to complete original bypass interstate design to I-95.

I grew up in Syosset right near the northern path of the remains what would’ve been 135. I have vivid memories of when I was little when they still had all the heavy equipment staged at the terminus at Jericho Tpke as if they would start working any minute. Of course that never happened.

If anyone has taken the Northern State Parkway in between Exits 30 and 32 east, in between Exit 41 and 45 east I would like to hear how your tires go over 8 of it's grooved surfaces with the first 4 at and passed Exit 31 A in the middle or left lane going around 62 mph and 65 mph to compare grooved sounds from my cars on non precipitation days and nights. Christian Barba, do you often take the Northern Parkway in those areas? I would like to follow people on Instagram that take the Northern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway often and for more videos of the Northern State Parkway in Nassau only, more videos of the Northern State Parkway from Veterans Highway to NY-110 and a video of the eastbound Northern Parkway from the Grand Central Parkway to Hauppauge on clear and cloudy skies with no opened windows or roofs of cars at speeds between 57 and 66 mph. I-495 from the Cross Island Parkway to Round Swamp Road. Meadowbrook and Wantagh Parkways from Merrick Road to Ocean Parkway and before and passed Old Country Road.

Building 101, or most of these parkways, would have probably just induced demand and would have not really fixed anything in the long run
@billymuellerTikTok

they should create a partial bridge with wind mills on top , partial tunnel and/or partial tidal dam to get access from the S.O.B. to Connecticut which would cost a lot but create jobs, lower carbon emissions over the long haul, alleviate traffic and generate electricity. name it after Long Islander Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt who lived on the North Shore in the summers as president.

You should have discussed why he built the parkway bridges so low…..Display the man’s true colors. Robert Moses was a racist who specifically built the bridges low enough for a prevent NYC City buses from brining “undesirables” out to the beautiful beaches of LI.
@DTD110865
@DTD110865 2 года назад
And yet. many of those "undesirables" can still reach those beaches through mass transit. He also built places like Jacob Riis Park, and there was no effort to keep any "undesirables" out.
