I loved going out to Zahn's Airport in the late 60's/early 70's. It was alwas bustling with activity and a great pllace for plane spotting!

And then heading over to Zorn’s in Bethpage for some incredible “to-go” food for a feast back at your home!! If you’re not feeling it for chicken and ribs, then just jump on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway Southbound until it ends at Merrick Road ( Montauk Highway for our Suffolk County neighbors) and head East into Massapequa. Right after the light for Hicksville Road, the place on your right is (after the ice cream shop on the corner) the legendary “All American”. Park anywhere you can find a spot, and then head over to the lines of people who are there for the same thing that you are there for. Just order 2 “Double-Doubles”, a Large Fries, and a Shake (either chocolate or vanilla). Take that bag of hot food back to your car and enjoy the rest. If you know….. know

I do know that the people who are AA fans will say that the Quarter-pounder with cheese is the way to go. And do you know what I will say to them??? Whatever you order there, you cannot go wrong. The knishes are extraordinary, and are not like anything else that you can order at a fast food place. They have hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches, but as a 50 year customer who has loved every single visit to All American, I would recommend that you stick with a choice of burger (1/4 lbs w/cheese or double doubles), and for the complimentary starch, the fries are hands down best I’ve ever eaten. Every single day they have a worker or five manually slice up a ton of fresh potatoes that are the ones that you will eat not so long after if you’re going to order. They have a big shredder , and just place a fresh potato in the correct zone and then they pull a lever down and create a bunch of fries. The place is not really appealing as you drive up and attempt to make your way through the crowd and get any food

My mouth is dropped to the floor after this one. I grew up in Syosset, never knew there was an air park in Hicksville, I did vagely know of one in present day Robbins lane in Syosset that was killed by NIMBYs in the 1940s ... Great series, loved the RR branch one earlier!

Amazing series. Can you make an episode of the Port Jefferson lirr brach. It used to extend up to wanding river. Tracks, bridges and right of way still intact. Also one of the non electrified tracks on the island.

You do an awesome job with these, such great content and information. Side note calverton is letting a drag racing group rent the runways to hold a racing event in June I believe. Maybe you can do long island racetracks of the past. Freeport, Islip, deer park (you can still see some of the track in the woods, bridgehampton, west Hampton, Vanderbilt cup, and the lone survivor Riverhead

During the years 1969 to 1970 I attended a BOCES avaiation class at MacArthur field for airframe mechanics. One day our normal instructor was apsent. Mr Spadaro was a one day substitute teacher. He was showing us how to remove rivets in a wing skin repair. All the wrong way to do it. LOL. When our regular teacher came back he had a fit over it. And immediately showed us the correct way.

I'm amazed at how many airports I did not know about. I grew up in Queens in the 40' & 50's. I rode my bike to Flushing Airport to take my first flights with Speed's and Edwards' flying services. I later flew a bit out of Zahn's, Deer Park, and Mattituck, which was a grass strip at the time. I worked for Fairchild Engine Division and Republic Aviation and I took my physical for Aviation Cadets at Mitchell Field. It's sad to see that there is not even a plaque at Roosevelt field that marks Lindberg's historic flight. Some 70+ years later, I still fly into Brookhaven from my home field in the Adirondacks. Thanks so much for the great memories!

Great Job. As a Kid in the 60's I watched helicopter tests at Flower field, then Sikorsky aircraft, in East Setauket. Cars would park of 25A and watch Igor Sikorsky fly open single seat helicopters just above the tree line tethered by a cable. Sikorsky lived in Asharoken.

Great series. I hope there will be more. BTW there is a small hidden cemetery on the old Grumman property in Bethpage called the "Old Powell Plot" (40.7546700, -73.4929000). There is a historical marker there. Also Curtiss-Wright once planned to build an airport in the Bronx where Co-op City is now located. They bought the land but the airport was never built. Finally, when referring to physical distance, the word to use is farther, not further. Thanks!

I worked at AIL (Airborne Instruments Laboratories) in 1979. The airport was gone by then. But AIL had plenty of aviation history. There were two large hangers and a large field behind the building's for offices and manufacturing. It was fun working there. I was an Engineering student at the time. The stuff that they were working on was neat. Among other things, they did the landing guidance for the lunar module and in 1979 were actively involved in Electronic Counter Measures for military aircraft. There was a bar nearby called the Runway bar or Runway Inn or something like that. The bar outlasted the airfield. But it long gone now.

Since you touched on sea planes. There was a sea plane dock at the fire island pines that would fly from the city to the pines in the 80s and to my understanding they have brought back that service and have a new floating dock just west of the fire island pines harbor.

You forgot to mention how the residents screwed Fitzmaurice. He was an American hero and ran his little airport out there. Developers used him and his image to get people to move into the development...after they arrived they began to complain about the noise and it was eventually shut down.
