I’m a delivery guy and I’ve seen a lot of this. Always knew it was once part of,something but dude, you did an incredible amount of work here. Thanks. Maybe I missed it but..there’s an overpass on the CIP, maybe north of Jericho...I was told that was the beginning of Vanderbilt.. Really enjoyed all the work you put in on all 3 vids.

Very nice video we called it old motor Parkway. I grew up in the 50s were used to play on that road that crosses the tracks from east Williston into Williston Park. I think the bridge is still there near the pools now. The road was intact when I grow up from Roslyn Road will the way towards the park.

@danielcohn3338. I grew up in Albertson and hung out on the Old Motor Parkway bridge in the 1960's and 1970's. That steel bridge over the LIRR was demolished in October 1984, but the concrete abutment on the west side of the rr still exists as a retaining wall for the Williston Park pool. On the eastern side of the tracks, where I grew up, the abutment was removed and the ground leveled, although the pavement still exists east to Roslyn Road, where it ends by the stone wall just past the converted (and enlarged), former toll house.

Christian - thank you so much for all of your hard work generating these amazing series on the history of Long Island. This one was of particular interest to me being I am a LIMP buff! As a kid I used to ride my minibike along the remnants that existed at the time on LILCO property by Herricks High School and to the former Links Golf Course. Very interesting and informative! Be well!

I've lived here all my life, my grandfather was the 1st to move here from the bronx In the 40s with his family, his wife (my grandma) moved further into long island after they got married as well. My other grandparents (dad's parents) moved further into Long Island after they got married in the late 60's, and have lived in the same house since.

I usually don't write comments, but y6ur videos were awesome. I lived on LI for over 27 years (I left in the early 1990s, but my parents still lived there until 2009) and I used to work as an engineer for Grumman (in Plant 5 at the Bethpage site, which is now Grumman studios), and I never knew about the old LI Motor Parkway. I now live and work in California (not by choice). I'm a big history buff and your series of hidden LI history was fascinating and extremely well-made. Thank you for doing such in-depth research. BTW, I agree with Vincent's comments below about the Power Broker (a great book). It would be great to see additional parts of your series in the future, perhaps about the LIRR, the defunct retail stores that used to be there (like Korvette's and White's), or more about aviation history. I may have a few pictures you could use and I might be able to fill in some of the gaps you might encounter. I'd be happy to help. I also wanted to mention that the Seaford Oyster Bay's (Route 135) southern terminus used to be about 2-3 blocks south of Jerusalem Avenue and would dump out onto Seaman's Neck Road at a traffic signal. I don't remember when the expressway was extended past this point down to Merrick Road, but it was probably sometime in the '60s because I used to live a few blocks away. Pop-quiz to everyone out there: does anyone remember when Roosevelt Field mall was an open-air mall?

Do you remember mid island mall was an open air mall with a big lit up star over it?? Many if my friends parents worked at Grumman. I lived 1/4 miles from end of runway and remember NASAs guppy coming in to pick up the LEM. It flew right over my house VERY low. I also knew the wiring forman for the LEM and also remember they made two identical LEMs. One went to the moon, the other stayed in the plant and it was pushed out into the parking lot when the astronauts came back. I t was spray painted camo green and sat there for a very long time. I used to pass it on my way to school

As a native New Yorker raised in Bklyn during the 60's and 70's, and a product of the Foster care system then, I had almost forgotten how picturesque L.I. was (and still is). We never did a lot of traveling up there, but in one particular stretch we used to frequently go to the VA hospital there to visit my Dads father and and his natural son during his medical discharge from the marines. Both of them are in Pine Lawn Cemetery. I forget were exactly where the hospital was, but I distinctly remember the LIRR being right there and I was always fascinated by that train but only rode on it ONE time! No doubt, Long Island always stood out from all other boroughs.

Such a great video. Well done. However, the right of way where the power lines exist are from the abandoned Stewart line from the Long Island Railroad, not motor parkway. Although, there are points where there were indeed very close to each other, (near the crossings of Newbridge road and Wantagh ave.)
@sw5114
@sw5114 Год назад
Throughout Nassau County you will find the power lines and right of way which mark the path and remaining sections of Motor Parkway. Through Levittown is also the LIRR ROW with power lines. For most of this section both the LIMP and LIRR run side by side.

In addition to that mound which is left from the bridge embankment, there are two more easily visible today. One is on the east side of Clinton Road in Garden city, just a bit north of the school sitting on the corner of Stewart avenue. The elevated mound is just outside of the border of Roosevelt field. The bridge over Clinton road was taken down decades ago. There is another one on the north west corner of union turnpike and Winchester blvd, right across from creedmore in Queens. It is a high mound that is the eastern terminus of the extant part of the motor parkway in queens county. The top is paved and continues west.

I used to walk on the motor pkwy when I was a kid. It was right behind my house. At the corner of Stewart Ave & Arthur Ave in Bethpage there is still a mound of dirt that was an overpass. There are still remnants of the pkwy along Arthur Ave, between Stewart and Broadway in Bethpage There are houses built under the power lines just south of Crestline ave. These houses are on the old motor pkwy

@@brianjames4169 I just took a former LI friend to many of the sites which this terrific video demonstrates. There is much to discover, particularly in Nassau county. The section on the south side of Great Neck S. High School, is perhaps the best and most intact artifact of the parkway’s pavement. Would that more of the entire length could be identified, and preserved, cleaning debris and excess growth from the surface. Most Long Islanders, today, know almost nothing of this historic road.
