Grumman also built the Lunar Module (LEM) that landed on the moon during the Apollo missions. Long Islanders we’re very proud of that achievement. In the late 1970s Grumman also built commuter city buses for the City of New York. They all had to be recalled and scrapped because of the structural cracks.

I'm very surprised that there is no mention in this episode of Westhampton Air Force Base which was an base used for ( ADC) Air Defense Command

As a kid, I went to an open air flea market on the site of the Grumman building off of 110 on Conklin. got me some Mork from Ork suspenders there. Back in the day, Long Island loved flea markets.

Thank you for making these videos. My Grandfather worked for Grumman when I was a little girl. I remember attending the Huge company picnics. They had animals, rides, clowns, food... everything you could think of. The employees and their families were treated very well. I have taken my daughters to the old Carousel, that is in Greenport now. Four generations of my family have ridden the carousel that now resides in the Jess Owen Carousel House in Mitchell Park. I look forward to more videos to learn more about the Islands history.

I just found this video and your channel! My grandpa had so many stories from his childhood. He used to ride his bike down northern boulevard all the way to Roosevelt field and he would watch planes take off and land all day. He then for a job at Grumman, was deployed as a B29 mechanic in Saipan in WWII then worked again at Grumman in Bethpage until he retired. Going to need to watch the full long Island hidden history series!

I remember walking to Roosevelt Field in the early 70s in the winter time. Having pizza, hot pretzels and potato kanish. It was great.

You can still see parts of the Grumman runway on google maps just off Grumman Road W. There was also an unfortunate accident a number of years ago when a small GA plane with an engine failure was directed at the airport long after it's demolition because ATC maps still depicted it.

I live in Long Island and every week I always see the mitchelfields Air Force base I even went to the museum and it’s crazy just how much history Long Island have I hope they don’t destroy the buildings that made history

At age 16 a friend and I decided to ride our bikes from Oakdale to Michel field. It was an all day ride there and back. When we got there we explored the whole field. There was old sealed off ammunition bunkers made out of concrete and covered with soil. You could ride up and down them. The runway at that time was used for car events, motorcycle races and alike. All the old hanger buildings were still there including the control tower. Interesting history.

In the sunken meadow state park trails at its high point, there exists a bunker of some sort and the remnants of the rig for a gun or missile launch. Any info on that would be welcome. Thanks for a great video!

A couple of additions: the Liberty Aircraft engine factory was in Farmingdale. They built the motors for World War I fighters. The water tower was still there with "LIBERTY" painted on it last time I drove through. There is a marker at the foot of Ocean Avenue in Amityville at the southeast corner by Unqua Place showing the launch point of America's first guided missile... another Glenn Curtis achievement. He also maintained a boathouse/floatplane hangar there.

A little extra information about Camp Upton / B.N.Lab. Before it was known as Upton, the area was part of Yaphank, and was Heavily settled by German immigrants. A summer camp was opened there, and was called Camp Siegfried. (I'm pretty sure, that's the spelling). It was used by Ger/Ams from the N.Y. metro area, and also used by the German - American organization known as the Bund. And if it wasn't for WW2, my German ancestry mother would probably have been an American nazi, and us children, also. Thank God, that never happened.

So I grew up in Baldwin. Had no idea Grumman started there. Thanks!

My grandfatehr worked for Grumman and helped even with the lunar projects there. Grumman was, according to my father, a very large part of Long Island. I heard from my father that Grumman had tasked my grandfather with picking up a delivery for them, somrthing they needed for the lunar project, which he did. When he returned to Grumman with the package they didn't have the paperwork to take in the order so they had my grandfather keep the package in his car over a weekend. Finding out it was gold, needed for insulation, my grandfather kept the car in the backyard over the weekend and wouldn't drive anywhere. I've heard the company picnics were really good as well.

I still remember the big E-2C Hawkeyes and S-2T’s with the big radar domes that would fly over my house in Syosset on their way to Bethpage or Calverton. My mother was the project engineer on both those programs at Grumman.

Old Brookville missile site is now BOSOC horse 🐎 ride camp and a new Brookville police station. You can still see the plates in where the missiles came out

How about Camp Mills in Garden city? And the forts in Whitestone and Brooklyn. And the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

A taked-about threat was a nuclear missile hitting Manhattan, and I remember the terrifying air raid drills in elementary school. I think they stopped about 1980.

The commentator said military aircraft production ended in 1966 at Republic. Incorrect statement as the Air Force A-10 attack plane was born in the early 70s and was built by Fairchild Republic into the 1980s. 713 were produced and still fling today.

Back when Grumman merged with Northrop, one of my brothers got some old electronic equipment from Grumman in an auction (oscilloscopes and similar equipment), and my father and I had to drive out to their Bethpage Airport to pick it up. There was a very pretty tiny blonde girl who worked at the place, who I incorrectly thought was the person we were supposed to meet there. I hoped she was single at the time, because I'm kind of sorry I never asked her out on a date or two.

@Christian Barba. At 8:25 You mentioned the end of military aircraft manufacturing in Farmingdale. Not True. Fairchild Republic, located across from the abandoned buildings on Conklin St. built the A-10 (Warthog) AKA tank killer in the 1980s in Farmingdale. This aircraft played a major role in Dessert storm. My mother worked at Fairchild Republic during this time.
